As usual, at our dinner table, we often discuss news events of the day, and the DC area sniper's arrest came up last night.

DD Jennifer, 11, our thoughtful and sensitive child, asked my "WHY would someone do something that terrible, Mom?"

I start to say that sometimes people get really angry with the government, or are trying to get attention, or want money, or are just evil, bad people.

DS Mark, 7, says, "I think his TEACHERS were mean to him when he was a kid!"

(I think he has a promising career as a criminal defense attorney . . .)

LOL! I think you should ask him what he did and you don't know about yet.

Seriously, there's probably a lot of wisdom behind his words. While nothing excuses what those men did, we do tend to forget how dramatic everything seems to a young child. Some harsh words that we're able to write off as okay because they were due to a bad mood can linger in the ears of a child.

And it's unfortunate that it takes only one experience for a child. My nightmare was Sr. Ruth in 5th grade. This year my son has a "yeller" as the guidance counselor called her.

It's sad that teachers can treat kids in a manner that leaves them traumatized for years and angry and hurt for many more. We had a big discussion on this at my high school reunion.

I would be concerned about what's going on at school.
