Let me begin by saying that although we're relatively young, our work schedules have us on an old-fogey schedule. We're usually in bed around 10:00 and up by 6:30 or so and those habits are hard to break, even on vacation. So after a great night's sleep in those comfy RPR beds, we woke up early and were dressed and ready to go by 8:00. Since IOA didn't open until 9:00 we leisurely strolled over to Citywalk rather than taking the water taxi. My DH was so impressed with the resort and how close it was to the parks! We grabbed our 5 day passes from the ticket kiosk (super easy!) and we saw that they were letting people into the park early (loved that about the Universal parks - we stood in line over at WDW until the exact opening time) so we headed into IOA to grab some quick breakfast. We all had some pastries at the Crescent Moon Bakery - yummy!!! My DH had a cheese danish, I had a croissant and we split a coffee, my DD had a chocolate eclair and my DS had a croissant sandwich with ham, egg & cheese and they split a milk. It was about $15 and very good and convenient.
After our breakfast we headed over to Marvel Super Hero Island and my DH and DS tried to get on Hulk but we told my son wasn't tall enough. His hair was just touching the bar and the guy working the line said his head had to be hitting it. We were too discouraged though - I knew we'd be back to try again!
We then headed over to Spiderman and we all loved it - it was just as good as I remembered it being when we visited 2 years ago. After that, we had to browse through a couple shops and I made a mental inventory of what I wanted to buy before we left - not a short list!
Toon Lagoon wasn't open yet so we backtracked over to Suess Landing. For some reason, The Cat in the Hat wasn't running so we all rode the Caro-Seuss-El at my DD's request. We then headed to The Lost Continent, my favorite area of the park, theme-wise. My DH & DS headed over to see if they could get on Dueling Dragons and strangely enough, he WAS tall enough to ride! They rode Ice and loved it! My DD and I spent time at the Mystic Fountain while we waited for them, which quickly became one my kids' favorite things to do. We all rode the Flying Unicorn before venturing over to Jurassic Park. There we rode the River Adventure after having to persuade my DS who remembered being pretty scared the last time he rode it. This time he loved it and so did my DD! Although the park wasn't particularly busy, we were really enjoying using the FOTL and had done all of that before noon!
We had promised my son we would go to the Titanic Exhibit so we headed out the park and back to the resort to our car which worked out good since it had been raining on & off. If anyone wants specific details about the Exhibit, feel free to ask. We really enjoyed it and found it very tastefully displayed. We grabbed a bite to eat at the Cuban Express in the Mercado (very reasonable & good) for lunch before our tour. Afterwards, we headed to the Prime Outlet for some shopping. We had to make it back to RPR by 6:00 for our reservations at Tchoup Chop so Mike dragged me away from the stores and back to the resort.
We weren't sure how to dress but we felt fine in our casual clothes. We had to wait about 5 minutes before we were seated but then our waitstaff quickly introduced themselves and took our drink orders. I had a Pago Pago ($9.00) which was a rum/mint drink. If you don't like mint, you wouldn't like this - it was VERY minty but cool and refreshing. I liked it but didn't love it enough to get another one. My DH doesn't drink so I think he had coffee or something & my kids had soda. We started with an order of calamari ($7.50) to share and it was more than enough for the 4 of us! It had a crunchy, slightly spicey breading and came with feta cheese and a chile sauce that was also a bit spicey/sweet but divine! We all loved it but my DH (wicked man) didn't tell the kids what they were eating until later that night. My DD said that it was "good chicken"! LOL! My entrees, I had the Hawaiian Style Dinner Plate (including Kiawe Smoked Ribs, Kalua Pork, Teriyaki Grilled Chicken, Chorizo Potato Hash and Baked Macaroni $26.00). I loved the ribs, the pork must have been in lo mein and that was good, the chicken was a bit dry and I couldn't taste the teriyaki on it and I also thought the baked macaroni was a bit bland and dry. The potatoes were good but I couldn't taste any chorizo in those either. Overall, I thought my dish was good but I wouldn't have ordered it again. However, my DH's meal was excellent! He had the Kiawe Smoked Oyster Stuffed Quail, Tempura Fried with Asian Ratatouille, Chorizo Cream Glaze and Crispy Spinach ($25.00). I tried it and I wished I had ordered it too. The quail was just crispy enough with the tempura coating and the oyster stuffing really complimented the dark meat. It was very rich though and I don't know how my husband finished it all! I didn't really taste the glaze on it or the spinach but it all must have been good since none of it was left. My DS had the fetticine alfredo ($8.00) and so did my DD but she added shrimp to hers ($13.00). They gave the kids a large portion and they both liked their meals but they couldn't finish half of it. Our waiter also gave the kids cute kid's chopsticks to eat with & they though that was great fun! We were unfortunately too full for dessert although they looked delicious. Our meal was about $97.00 and I thought worth it for the experience. We would return again.
Sorry this got so long!
