Our Reason for Disallowing Simple ING Discussions

A thread asking about ING was removed today, but before it was removed, this question was asked and I wanted to answer it so that everyone can (hopefully) understand why we do what we do.

I thought DIS just wanted everyone to stop the referral talks (which I can understand).

They don't want us discussing ING ( or any other online bank for that matter) at all?

Unfortunately no, since any discussion of ING invariably develops into a discussion on the merits of its referral program. Or sparks unsolicited offers for referrals to the people who post to the thread when it is clear that they do not have an ING account. I am willing to bet that the OP has already received several offers of a referral for ING from people that s/he does not know through PM or e-mail, simply by raising this question.

So I hope that you all can understand that although ING is a great thing and is very legitimate, the risk of using a referral link from someone that you don't know is too great that we must not allow any discussion of this bank.

I am sorry... :(

I have no idea what an ING is or what you're talking about,  , but thanks all the same for the moderators looking out for us once again.

OK, I can understand that.

I have a question regarding referrals in general. What if in order to refer somebody for something all you had to do was give them your email address. No links to follow. Just plug in your email address in order for you to get credit. Would this type of referral be acceptable?

Well, if you only had to follow an e-mail address, then how would the refer-ER be credited for referring the refer-EE?
I don't think that this will be allowed since it still allows someone (the refer-ER) to gain from posting on the DIS. We allowed the ING thing since both parties benefitted, but it truly was an exception. And even that is gone now.

Although I did indeed benefit from the ING info. shared on the thread, I'm glad the plugged was pulled. It seemed as though several completely separate threads a day would always start getting OT w/info on ING and someone asking people to PM them for the referral. It was definitely getting out of hand. I'm sure the same results could be achieved by giving the info. to friends, family, and co-workers. Good luck to those that are still actively persuing the bonus. :flower:

Ok fair enough.

I do have a concern on how many companies are going to be blocked because they have referral programs.

Thanks again Beth for keeping the boards safe.

The thanks definately goes to our webmasters - specifically MrJCricket and Alex. ::yes::

I don't think that ANY other DISCUSSION of programs will be disallowed unless they require that you use personal information to sign up - IE: SS#'s, bank account #'s, etc. Of course we do not allow anyone to PROMOTE a referral program on the boards.

:)
