We stayed at OKW from Dec. 19-24. This was our second stay there, our first time staying in a studio. We felt lucky when the friendly cm checking us in told us that we did indeed have a quiet room and that our room was ready early.
That feeling changed when we opened the door to the room and saw the family already occupying eating breakfast!
I think that the shocked look on the mother's face said it all. "May I help you?" she said as sweetly as can be!
She looked at our paperwork from inside her doorway, noted that we really were assigned the same room, and invited us in to call the front desk. Complete grace under fire.
We declined, appologized and drove back to the front desk.
After waiting in line again and talking with a different cm, a manager came out to apologize. We weren't upset and let them know that we understood that it was an honest mistake. No big deal. In turn, the manager asked if there was a certain location that we would like to choose a room from for our trouble. Our only request was a quiet room. No room was ready at that point, so we scrapped our plans for an early day at a park and just hung out at Hank's for a while. DD13 loved palying pool and air hockey. It was freezing outside, so we just decided to skip the park that day and relax.
Two hours later, we got a call that our new room was ready. We would up in what must be one of the worst rooms at the resort. It was a room on the second floor of building #56, right on the corner of Peninsular road. The door was ajar when we got there. It looked clean, yet dingy, and nothing seemed to be missing. It was one of the non-refurbed rooms. The TV was as small as the 14" one we keep on our kitchen counter! It was old and in bad shape. Best yet, the room hung over the the airconditioning units and was maybe 12 feet from the road. The bus stop was right across the street. You could actually hear the prerecorded bus announcements through the walls from the bed....with the windows closed... and the tv on!
DH had taken DD to Hanks to paint Christmas ornaments while I got on the phone to sort things out. The cm who answered didn't seem too concerned with what we were going through. He said that he would talk to the manager and see what could be done. I was told to wait in the room and he would call back soon. After an hour, I tried calling again. No luck. The cm said that they were very busy and would call back soon. By now it was lunch time, and we had missed our ADR. I called my DH and told him to walk over and talk to the manager who was so kind after our first mishap. It really was very crowded at the check-in, so he got in line.
An hour later, a very nice cm told my DH that he knew the building #56 room we were assigned well and couldn't believe that we had been put in it. He found a very nice studio for us in building 63, room 6325. The room was clean, the tv was newer, the loction was very quiet, and the view from the balcony was beautiful. Whew!
He also gave us a $100 credit to be used any way we liked. This wasn't necessary, but it was a nice touch. We unpacked our car, set up our Christmas tree and lights, and enjoyed most of the day at the resort. We let the kids split the $100 while shopping at DTD that night.
The next day, we awoke to a call informing me that my mother had unexpectedly passed! We didn't bring our laptops, so it made sense to head over the the front desk to see if concierge could help me find a rental. I needed to drive down to S. Fla. to help my father out while my DH stayed with our grieving children. There was chaos in the lobby, and a different manager was greeting guests at the door to help direct them to the right place. I told him about my mother, and he sweetly walked me to a concierge cm and asked her to help me. He explained that there was a temporary system-wide computer outage and that she could call a rental agency for me. He then attended to other gusts. The concierge cm called the number of an agency they use and just handed the phone to me and looked at me.
She didn't qualify the call or anything. Really?!! I just handed it back to her, thanked her for her "help", and walked away.
Believe it or not, I still really like OKW. I think that we just had a very unlucky trip. It actually was a good thing that we had a place with such nice activities for the kids to enjoy. It helped them keep their minds off of the sadness that they would soon have to face down at my Dad's place. Our DD played games, made jewelry, swam and enjoyed the pool party while our DS hung out at the room, enjoying his "peace and quiet." Our last room was very nice and relaxing. The beds were comfy and the grounds are lovely. My DH doesn't want to stay there anymore, but I would like to give it one more chance. I guess time till tell!
