Well-it was Saturday evening and our "first night" WDW dinner. We were looking forward to Narcooossee's , along with the nice view the fireworks, which were set for 9:00. There were 6 in our party and things got off to a poor start right away. When we arrived at 10 minutes until 8 (our ADR's were for 8:00) the podium hostess announced (in a rather abrupt way) that there was a 30 minute wait. Then, to add insult to injury, quickly added '"And that's from your scheduled ADR time".
How nice.
So that made it a 40 minute wait. No room for us in the tiny waiting area, and seats at the bar were out since two of our party didn't drink--which left standing out on the deck as the only option. So with pager in hand, out we went. Walking around outside, I couldn't help looking in the restaurant and seeing several large, freshly set, EMPTY tables. So no real idea why the delay. Turned out that our wait was 20 minutes, and at 8:20 we were seated.
Our server appeared promptly--and I guess we should have better appreciated that, as she was absent for long periods throughout our meal. Worse still, when she did happen by the area (and was serving other tables), we couldn't even get her attention!! She wouldn't even look our way, and was then off for another spell. (Should say tho that when she did appear at our table, she was pleasant and efficient). I also noticed that many of the other servers appeared "robot-like" in their mannerisms. Even when they passed each other serving food, etc, they really didn't acknowledge each other. Sort of everyone just going through the motions, wishing the evening were over. And the Disney manager that night seemed to have a perpetual scowl on his face. Didn't stop at any table (including ours) to inquire about how things were--just walked around looking mad.
Anyway--the food. Mrs. U and the ladies had wine (from a pretty good list) and I had a beer. Seems each year their beer offerings are less and less (I once could get Blackened Voodoo there) and now there are mostly the usual suspects. I got a Bass Ale--which I should have savored more dearly, as it was almost 1/2 hour before I was finally able to order another!! Our server (in one of the moments when she DID look our way) finally said "That looks empty". Well--yes it was!! By the time I got my second beer, we had gotten our entrees and the fireworks had started. Not good...
Turned out that Mrs. U and I were the only people who wanted appetizers, so we split the crabcakes. There were two on the plate and were "tasty-sweet", but small enough that I could have eaten both. But being the gentleman that I am, I shared with Mrs. U. It took a little while for the appetizers to arrive and we had barely put down our forks when the dinners came! No one had cleared the table, and the "runners" who brought the main course made no attempt to do so. They simply shoved our empty crabcake plate aside, and put down the other plates!! MAJOR FAUX PAS!!! Not only wasn't there a decent interval between courses, the empty appetizer plate still sitting on the table wasn't "becoming" in a good restaurant like Narcooossee's.

As for the dinners themselves.. As I mentioned there were 6 of us, but only 5 dinners arrived!! No explanation from the runners, but the person who ordered the "Wild" salmon didn't get her dinner. A good 5 minutes later, the Salmon appeared. The person who brought it (again, NOT our server) did apologize and stated that the original dinner had been "dropped" in the kitchen. Since I'm discussing the Salmon, I should say that she didn't like it. It was a nice size piece of fish, but under-cooked. Perhaps because they had to rush it since the first was dropped(?), it was not cooked entirely through. Not exactly raw inside, but not really cooked either. So she wound up eating the "outside" half, and leaving the inside.
Two of the ladies ordered the grilled chicken breast and both liked it. Two others had the filet mignon--well done and butterflyed. They prounounced it as good, but it looked to me like a mighty small piece of meat at $30.00+ I had the Wahoo. A nice portion of tasty fish--but served with a blend of white beans and an almost tasteless tomato sauce. "Bland" is the perfect description, and coupled with the fish which really had no sauce or seasoning, it was ALL pretty bland. When our server appeared to clear the table, she remarked--'" I see we didn't like our beans!"
No--we didn't.
Mrs U and I were the only two ordering dessert--I got the Key Lme Creme Brulee, and she got Tropical Sorbet with berries. Both were excellent, as was the coffee we had all around. And we did enjoy the fireworks, which we watched from the deck outside.
So-how would I rate things overall? Well-it wasn't a disaster by any means, but none of us really enjoyed ourselves. Probably a C-. Maybe because it was a Saturday night things were a bit too busy for the restaurant. I don't know. All I can say is that it wasn't among the better meals we had at WDW this trip, and we'll probably be skipping it next time.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. We had a very similiar one at Yachtsman Steakhouse last week. We have always enjoyed these restaurants in the past and have found the found and service amazing, but not this year. For the price you are paying for the food, my expectations are high. Let's hope for better next time!

This was a great review! Sorry about your less than stellar dining experience. :)

Good review. I wonder if they were short-staffed--could that be why the manager looked mad, maybe? As for the half-cooked salmon~ewww~

Thanks for the review. I'm sorry you had a less-than-stellar experience, but I'm glad to hear that there were a few good points to the meal and that you were able to enjoy the fireworks. :)

We had a somewhat similar experience. We were two ladies and the server paid more attention to the "families." Which is fine, but when the food arrived, we were disappointed.

The next night I took my co-worker to Olivia's for dinner. She said that was the best meal she has eaten at WDW.

(We went to: Boatwrights, Mexico, Narcoose's, Wolfgang Puck and Jiko).

Since then, I have not taken my family to Narcoose's - not worth it.

Thanks for the review. It will be interesting to see how our meal goes in Dec. It is good to know which entrees to steer clear of and how each one is prepared. It sounds like the Salmon was thrown on a plate before it was done. It would have been better to explain it to the customer and then comp her entree. The appetizer plate left on the table was just poor training of the staff. That's why we love V & A's.

Two words to explain all of these recent less-than-stellar reviews:

Free Dining.

Thank heavens it has ended. Only a few stragglers must be left now. We'll be there in two weeks for the F&W Festival and I hope by then that free dining is only a distant and unpleasant memory for the staffs.

Free dining totally stressed the wait staffs, the kitchen staffs and the management of restaurants all over the property. When we were there in August it had only been going a couple of days. Our wait at Chefs de France was something like 60 minutes past our 8:30 p.m. ADR. The maitre d' looked like he was near collapse. Our waiter, while pleasant, was absolutely running at top speed. The place was jam packed and reminiscent of the Circus Circus Buffet in Las Vegas. Not pretty!

By contrast, a year ago we walked into Chefs de France at 8:30 p.m. without an ADR. We were practically the only ones in there. We had a delightful meal and wonderful attention for us and our two children from the relaxed and happy waitress.

Same thing at Alfredo's in late August. One entree came out over 10 minutes past the others. They said the kitchen lost the order for one of the entrees. They comped desserts, which was nice. Nonetheless, the stress was showing already.

I think if I'd been forced to work tons of extra hours, run like crazy, listen to people complain because the $12 specialty dessert isn't availabe on free dining and had my tables turning over half as often as usual due to everyone ordering and consumming a main course, an appetizer and a dessert, I'd be grouchy too!

I hope we never see free dining again. It completely changed the character and ambience of WDW dining and certainly not for the better.

What a shame! I guess we made the right choice in Citrico's for next week - we were going back and forth between Narcoossee's and Citrico's.

I agree about the free dining. I think it was great savings for those that used it, but I do believe it led to alot of bad food service and long waits. Even the little snack stands had long lines. on 9/30 the longest line we stood in at MK was the ice cream line, 10 minutes! Our trip contiuned like that, from counter service to restaurants!

We had the same bad experience in April so I'm not sure if it is the free dining. My son requested Narcosses because it was his all time favorite restaurant and he was very dissappointed. We had the same bad service some not so hot food and a long wait time even with a PS (our wait was almost 35 mins. we were told 15 ). So we will probably try it again it is a favorite for us not not to soon. We skipped it last week.

I second (or third or fourth) a bad experience at Narcoosee... We went a few years ago for my hubbie's B-day. We had a boat cruise waiting and the service was SO bad, I thought we'd miss our cruise! Yikes!

We were seated next to the podium (almost on top of it)! The service, when there was any, was awful. I explained that we needed to get out on time and it was almost deliberate how long it took! ARG! The food was just so so and barely warm. I think we had to skip dessert because it took so long. (Yes, we had a DVC % off, but still.) There is NO way I will go there again. Our evening was almost ruined. (My hubbie didn't want to go back to Citrico's that night because he thought his pork was too salty the previous year. He still doesn't want ot go there!) ;(

Anyway, we are going to V&A's on Fri. First time! I'm very excited. Then, we're spending the day at the Food & Wine. They'll have to roll us out of the park!

d :teeth:

That's spooky! You ordered exactly the same 3 courses I did and it sounds like we had the same waitress too! She just kept disappearing, took forever to get bread or water. My husband is vegetarian and ordered the squash soup, when it came it was served with a lump of crab. I'd practically finished my crab cakes before I could even get sight of our waitress to replace the soup.

We also had the same welcome at the podium, a very surly 'we are running 20 minutes behind'. Turned out it was more like 40 minutes so overall a decidedly average experience.

A couple of things to keep in mind: empty tables do not mean the restaurant has the capacity to seat and serve you at that time, and an ADR means you get the next suitable table available after your ADR time. If it's 40 minutes then it's 40 minutes. I think you were fortunate with 20 minutes for a large party. Sorry the rest of your experience was not as expected.

Many upscale restaurants serve salmon "medium", like when ordering a steak. They will not cook it "well done", which is what I like, unless you ask. However, the restaurant usually lets the patrons know how it is cooked, and give you the opportunity to change it. The server should have let you know first.

If you want good salmon, try Artist Point. I'm not a huge salmon person and it was incredible. And they did ask me how I wanted it cooked first. :)

Thanks Uncleromulus for your thorough review.

A lot of people enjoy salmon somewhat undercooked. But it sounds like only a bear would have enjoyed the salmon your wife received.

Not that it matters, but Narcoossee's has three consecutive double letters. Based on this review, maybe it deserves to be misspelled.

We had a so so meal there as well. Ours was a last minute ADR. We were looking for a nice dinner. The concierge staff reccommend Narcoosee's. We arrived promptly, checked in, and told there would be a wait. Although we were the only ones waiting at the time. Two minutes later another family showed up(same as us...father, mother, a 3yr old and a baby) he had a fit about the wait and his ADR was for the same time as ours. He demanded to speak to the manager etc. His family and ours were seated at the same time. The wait time for our food was rediculous, wait staff was slow, and the food was just so so. Our ADR was for 8:30, and by the time we were finished the monorail wasn't running! So, we started to walk back to the Poly with two little kids and a nice CM driving a golf cart ran us back to our hotel. BTW, we had to listen to the gentleman with the family gripe the entire night. :snooty:

No excuse for Uncleromulus mis-spelling it.
But interesting to read through Narcoossee's posts and see the different ways it can be spelled :teeth:
I COULD go back and change it--but now the cats out of the bag. So I'll leave it and accept the consequences---

Wow...I'm very surprised. As part of free dining, my wife and I ate at there on Wednesday, 10/5. Although the appetizers (shrimp cocktail and calamari) were OK, the entrees were some of the best we had on our trip. My wife loved the salmon...hers was cooked thoroughly - she's not a fan of undercooked slamon - and my lobster was wonderful. I thought about the surf and turf, but the whole lobster was a maine lobster and the surf and turf came with a warm-water lobster tail, that sealed it for me.

The timing was perfect. After dinner, we hopped on the boat to Poly and MK and got to watch wishes on the ride over.

In my mind, the only better food we had in 10 days was Emeril's at City Walk and Party for the Senses. Brown Derby was close, but I thought Narcoossee's stood above Kona and Le Cellier a wide margin.

I, too, am sorry that you did not have a good experience. My family of 4 ate dinner there on Tuesday, 10/04/05, and had a wonderful experience. We were seated within 15 minutes of our arrival time (we arrived at most of our ADRs about 15-20 minutes early) and had a wonderful server. I wish I could remember his name. He treated us like royalty and was very professional in his demeanor and service. Our food was quite good and experiencing Wishes from the porch was fantastic!
