Hey....Congratulations, Rebecca!! As the mom of a puppy now, I can tell you that you are going to have lots of fun!! I'm used to dogs and puppies and training them, so if you have any questions, just ask. They are all so different.
My main advice and one of the trainers I've used in puppy classes is to make every experience a positive one, so that they are happy confident puppies and don't end up with a lot of fears. Fears can lead to aggressiveness, which is why the trainers now days are emphasizing the positive experiences. Keep the puppy out of situations that will tend to lead to problems, etc. Distract them and turn the pups attention to what he or she should be focussing on, etc. But, just mainly enjoy the puppy while he or she is so young.
They are puppies for such a brief time.......just love every moment.
Another piece of advice, and as a scrapbooker and photographer.....Keep you camera out ALL the time. Disney is now allowed in the kitchen and family room....main living areas, not bedrooms....but he just turned 10 months now. Even though, I always have the camera either on a counter or on a lamp table or coffee table next to me with the cap off during the day. They are always pulling something that you want to photograph and it's so fun. I also have a video camera available all the time. If you have a video camera, start photographing from the time you bring him home. You will want those videos to saver later on. They're such characters when they're young that I'm always saying....I gotta have a picture of that....and the behavior will change if you have to get up and leave the room. Sunday, we watched the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet instead of the Super Bowl and Disney went nuts hearing the puppies playing....I got 5 photos of him jumping up and down barking at the TV with the puppies on TV playing in the background!
We had a Dachsund when I was a kid, too.....Hildeguard (Hildy for short). They are such characters that you will have no problem finding enough funny things to photograph. They're smart dogs, so keep the new puppy occupied when not sleeping.
Keep us updated, post pictures, and ask if you have any questions! Can you tell I'm excited for you??
