Ship: not sure what I went on compared to others, but if it was the same Magic, I would hate to be around you in the real world. At a very minimal calculation, the magic has seen over 1.2 million people pass through its doors. Compare that to my house that is 5 years old and MAY have seen 500 people and most of them the same over a period of the years. Do I have scratches on furniture, yes, do I have something broken somewhere, yes. I don’t know how it is in as good shape as it is. Are there rust spots yes, is it overall incredible? absolutely. With some of the reviews you would think the chandelier in the lobby was hanging by a wire and about to fall down. Also, Disney was VERY disappointed in the lack of work that was done in the last dry dock to the point that they redid several things that were done at that time, so that takes away from what can be done to fix the new issues.

People: Again, I am not sure what planet some of you live on or what fantasy land you expect Disney to put you in, but there are just some unhappy people. We saw a very entertaining adult meltdown by noon on Sunday. That was with 6 more days of togetherness. All revolved around who was going to take Junior to the club to dump him off. Really, 30 seconds of your day to get rid of your kid.

I think there may be some hope for the rest of you though. Last cruise I commented that it seemed that the casual “I can do what I want” attitude seemed to be taking over. With the exception of a few shorts and wife beater t shirts at dinner, I think this cruise was much more in line with what I feel that Disney has been trying to maintain as far as the throw back to 30s and 40s era of cruising. There were more people dressed up for dinners. I am not trying to rehash the dress code debate, but I don’t think it is appropriate for a grown man to wear a tank top and gym shorts to dinner several nights. Sorry just me. And luggage was not an issue, because he was much better dressed many times while around the ship. He was just at the next table is why I noticed.

Some people are really nice folks too and have a great time with their kids. While there were a few that seemed to fight and disagree with kids the whole time, there is a vast majority of people that I think had a great time with their kids. It is hilarious to see a dad hula hooping with his daughter, and mom playing ping pong with a son and all laughing and having a good time.
Saving loungers seemed to a little less of an issue this trip. There were crew walking around and removing towels that had been there for a while with no activity. There was very rarely a free lounger in Quiet cove, but never had a problem finding one at Goofy’s pool, so I just had to watch cartoons (which is fine by me!) By the way love the new loungers, much more comfortable.

Food: Food was great, Palo was FANTASTIC! Again, I am not sure what people are expecting. If you have never had something and try it and then don’t like it, I don’t consider that bad food, just you do not care for it. One night I did get a steak that was well done (ordered medium rare). Not the best but still actually very tender and good. Should I have sent it back, maybe, but with all the other food, I was not going to starve.

Palo: If you ever get Sylvester as your server, better take your stretchy pants. He was amazing and unfortunately kept bringing us food. We had a brunch with friends , 4 of us total, and had ordered a few things that we were going to share and each had a regular entrée. Well he decided that we needed to try a few of the other things, so food just kept coming. We ended up with 4 pizzas, 3 of the egg entrees, and 6 regular entrees, after we had all been to the buffet line at least once. Then the dessert, I went back for more stolen bread and fruit (my 3rd round of that) and then he shows up with a bowl full of the bread covered in whipped cream and fruit. Again, after everyone had been to the dessert line.

Service: This was our one let down for the entire cruise. We had our worst servers in all of our cruises. While watching all of the other tables have seemingly great service, 2 nights we did not have drinks until our head server brought them out when we had entrees. On that note, this was the first time I have ever considered the head server a functional person. Luis was amazing and talked to us and helped out the server and asst more than I have ever seen combined in all of our cruises. He brought water, drinks, food, whatever. I considered speaking with him about the service, but it was obvious he knew, and was doing what he could to help them out. In their defense we had a table of 4 sitting next to a table of 12, so they got most of the attention, so they may have considered them wonderful, all in perspective I am sure.

Stateroom: We went with an inside stateroom this time rather than a veranda to determine if we could do it and take more cruises. We survived and think that except for special cruises, we can live with going more often. We did miss the split bathroom, but we may step up to the insides with the split next trip.

Pirate party: Not sure why but this was a lot different than in the past. It seemed that a lot of the music was different and even several new dance things thrown in. It ended up more of a stage show than an interactive dance party as much as in the past. Also, we were on deck 10 which we have been before and really like it. I personally like to leave a little space for the servers to be able to walk, this is not an invitation for you to stand in front of me and stare at the server like he has 3 heads when you won’t move. I will let EVERY little kid in front of me, hold them up for you, what ever is needed for a kid, but not you as an adult. I got there 30 minutes ago and your lack of preparation is not my problem.

Rebooking onboard: Not sure if I kept asking the wrong questions, but I was not impressed with the rebooking this trip. If you asked a very pointed question, you may get an answer, but we were never offered any additional help or information. Probably the longest answer of 2 sit downs was when asking about the possibilities of Alaska in 2013 and the answer was that they have not decided what they are doing in 2013. We booked 2 more cruises but were never offered even one alternative pricing or date or anything. Now I will have to do all the research to see if we keep one or both. Said that she tought new iteneraries would be several moths away.

New ships: In talking to a few crew members that have been on the new ships, they do not have any urge to go back to them and are very happy on the Magic and Wonder. Said from their standpoint it is a whole different vibe and atmosphere. Yes it is still Disney and the magic touches that only they can do, but said that everything just feels more comfortable on the smaller ships. Maybe that is in part due to the shorter cruises on the Dream and may change with the Fantasy, but the 3 that I personally talked to were glad to be off of the Dream. 2 of the 3 were on the training servers teams that went to Europe to train everyone whenever all that took place.

Weather: was wonderful all week. Heard of 25-30 foot seas the week before and actually re routing this weeks trip to the Eastern due to weather. We had 3-5 foot seas and one day of sprinkles is as bad as it got. Could not have asked for better.

All for now, any questions just ask.

Forgot to add, this is the first time I know that we left someone in port. Leaving St Thomas I was watching behind the crow's nest and saw the 6 folks that were about 15 minutes late run and get on the ship. Well captain was still pacing around and tapping the rail, so we figured there was someone else coming with them. One of the dock officials even got their names and went running around the port area looking for them. Another 15 minutes we started to pull away and now 35 minutes late, we pull out of port and here comes a couple walking to the ship (we were probably 10 feet from the dock at that point. I actually got a chance to speak with the captain later the next day i believe, and mentioned that it must be tough to make the decision to leave someone. He said that he had spoken with their other family and that apparently they got back from a tour (not sure DCL or private) and the tour guide told them they had an hour and neither had a watch, so they did not really get in a hurry. Just goes to show, know what time to get back and rely on yourself for time. Also, not sure about travel arrangements, but we do not usually take all of our cash, cards etc on excursions, so not real sure what you can do if you don't have everything with you. Got to be tough on everyone that was with them still on board, puts a big downer on the trip real quick, and lots of uncertainties for the family. Apparently they flew to Orlando that night. Hope all is well with them if you know them or are them.

I loved your review! I'm looking forward to being back on Magic in 3 1/2 weeks.

Sylvester was my server at Palo for two meals on my last cruise on Magic. During the course of the evening my husband developed a migraine and had to leave. Sylvester treated me like a princess, and fed me like I wasn't going to get any more food while on the cruise (and it was only the third night!!!). I'm hoping we'll have him again in a couple of weeks!

I've been on all three ships, and I love them all. They are surely much better than my office!

Thanks for the awesome review. I so agreed with your perceptions. Some people are just so miserable that it spills over into their vacation. Sailing on the Magic this Saturday and can't wait.

Thanks for the review. We were also on this cruise and thought it was awesome, too! :goodvibes

If you ever get Sylvester as your server, better take your stretchy pants. He was amazing and unfortunately kept bringing us food. Then the dessert, I went back for more stolen bread and fruit (my 3rd round of that) and then he shows up with a bowl full of the bread covered in whipped cream and fruit.

He was our server for dinner - definitely relaxing and fun! He also piled my plate with fruit and cream-topped pastries when we were at brunch! Loved it! :thumbsup2

Thanks for your take on the cruise - we were on the same cruise as you also.

Interesting that you mention the poor service. Not sure what seating you had but we were on late seating and had the worst service ever also. In fact, I actually reduced the tip for the assistant server based on our exerience over the seven nights - it was a tough decision but the dining was a big part of the cruise for us and to have an assistant server who literally reeked of cigarette smoke, took up to 30 minutes to bring drinks, had to be asked several times for drinks/water refills and more bread, gave us dirty cutlery (and, on occasions, none at all), the list of problems is endless. I would be interested to know who your serving team were (I don't think you are allowed to post names on here however if you wouldn't mind PMing me I would like to know).

I didn't realise we left people behind in St thomas, nor had I noticed we were late leaving. I remember the horn battle with the Carnival ship though but we were drinking by the adults-only pool so hadn't realised what the time was ;)

Thanks for posting your review :thumbsup2

LOL! Loved the report and I agree, that people's perceptions and some times unrealistic expectations get a bit over the top.

Everytime I've been on the Magic, my expectations have been exceeded. I don't think this February will be any different.

Excellent report! We went on the Magic Western itinerary last November and had a wonderful cruise! I didn't expect any less, and in fact was pleasantly surprised by a few special touches!

Couple of things I forgot to mention. We had the automatic tips added, which in theory I liked, but now I am not so sure. We have always charged them, but decided what to give. Now it is a hassle to adjust anything down, and I think that is the point. I am not sure how this is going across the board, but I am leaning toward the don't like it side now. I am not sure how many folks are not tipping at all, because i know there seem to be a lot more vocal people about the price of the cruise already being too much with the tips added. To me it is all aprt of it and should be counted on as a cost before you decide whether or not you can afford to go.

At dinner, I noticed alot more 4 top tables and fewer 6-8 tops. We were linked with some friends, but had actually called and told DCL to put us at a larger table if needed, but we were a table for 4. I have always enjoyed getting to know a few other people and have always had good luck with table mates and getting along. We actually saw several tables around us leaning over and talking to each other. In some of the restaraunts the spacing does not allow for much room when you pull the tables apart, so they seemed to talk anyway as they were so close. Thought that was interesting.

At the adult pool, where did the pool games go?!?!?! We used to ahve a good time playing every afternooon. There is a group onboard now, Mimosa that played every afternoon. If you get a chance listen to them, they are incredibly talented. By far the best I have seen on the ship. Not sure where they can take their music, but we loved it. They are a duo of an acoustic guitar and a violin. They play everything from ballads to Metallica. It is incredible and can play pretty much anything we heard asked. My only problem with them is that during the afternoon in the shade of a lounger, being rocked by the seas, I got the best nap of the trip!

Spa - something to be aware of. I booked a massage for my wife online prior to going on the trip. We got there and moved it due to a conflict with our character breakfast and added another one for early in the week. Well my wife went and it was pretty much an hour long sales pitch instead of the usual 10-15 minute one and was not as good as in the past, so she tried to cancel the other one. They would not let her cancel becuase the other one was booked online and can not be cancelled except for 72 hours prior to sailing. We aregued that they moved both and neither were the original time anyway, but to no avail. Cancel for $60 or go for $110. She ended up going and was much better, but at the end of the day, I don't think I will ever book one online again. When we got onboard, she had choice of day and times, pretty much anything she wanted. Online, I took 1 of the 2 spaces left on a day and that was booking at midnight at 90 days out. Spa folks said that is something they are tying to change, or at least get more of the inventory available online, but take that for what it is worth.

When in February are you on the Magic?

My wife and I were on the same sailing. I agree peoples high expectations get in the way of them having a good time.
I often wonder how people would react if they had to watch a video of their meltdowns. Many of the meltdowns are due to children and parents not spending enough time together in their day to day lives.

Great trip report!

:thumbsup2 Great trip report! We were on the Magic Oct 8-15 with the 18ft swells...a little rocking and rolling, but we had a BLAST!

It's a shame your service wasn't up to par, ours was wonderful! The Magic met and exceeded every expectation we had. Yes, older ship but with much character.

Yes, you were right about the onboard rebooking process. Not much help or extra explaining for us newbies. A few of our shipmates rebooked with no problem, but knew what they were doing, what they wanted, and had done it before. We did rebook, but after we got home.

And yes, your right again about people and their meltdowns, though unfortunately we saw more children sick and parents trying to cope with helping get them somewhere than fighting. Although, we did see an argument or loud voices at times. Sad, really. What a memory could be had, if everyone treated others 'better than themselves'.

As for lounge chairs and saving? We noticed it, but it didn't seem to be a problem (course we were out of the pool area by about 1pm) and people came and went so fast, it just didn't seem like a problem.

Perhaps part of the problem with all the complaints, is that once you've been a time or two, sometimes you raise your expectations, and forget the small details, the blessings of being ON a vacation, and the joy of just being together. We've gone to WDW so many times, that yes, at times, we forget why we love it, or maybe a cm isn't as cheery as used to be, but we try to remember they're people too, have good and bad days and try to absorb all the fun, memory making times that we can!

Glad you had a good time, love your perceptions, and can't wait to go back again!
