Our kids want thrill rides, adults do not!

Both our children DD6 and DS11 want to ride all the roller coasters and thrill rides, and neither my DH nor myself like riding them! When I was younger I loved roller coasters, one bad experience on one at our local theme park and now I'm terrified! I can handle BTMR because it doesn't have big drops, but I tried 7DMT on our last trip and the pictures are hysterical because I look like I think I'm about to die! (yes huge ride wimp) DH is worse, doesn't even like the drop on PotC! The kids want to ride RR, 7DMT, SM! Does anyone else have this problem? What do you do?

Will your 6 year old be turning 7 before your trip? Once they turn 7, they can ride by themselves so once she has her next birthday the 2 kids can go together. Until she is 7, she has to have someone 14 or older with her, so an 11 year old would not work.

You can always walk through the line with them and not ride. As above a 6 year old needs an adult. They will ask her her age every single ride. The did all my kids last trip and they were 11, 9 and 7.

I have never been on a roller coaster before. Even when we went to WDW when I was a kid, I took a pass on Space Mountain.

We leave in a few days for our first trip with the kids. No telling when we might get back. I have agreed to go on any ride they want me to with a few exceptions: Rock & Rollercoaster, Mission Space... I think that's it. Oh, and I'm trying to get out of Test Track.

I might feel terrible half the time we're here, but it isn't about me this time around.

They can ride together. My kids, who are 12, 9, 9 do it all the time. I love roller coasters, but my wife doesn't, so sometimes I'll just stay with her and let the kids go by themselves.

Test track actually feels pretty tame as a roller coaster, the only part that is freaky are the parts in the dark where they make it seem like things are coming at you, however the actual movement really is more like being in a car.

Yes the part on the outside goes at like 60 mph and sounds really fast from the outside, however you have probably driven on a freeway and thats all it really feels like. Like you drove on a freeway in a convertable.

This works for you because your kids are all over 7. However for the OP since the younger one is under 7 they are not allowed to ride without someone over 14. They are going to either have to claim the kid is 7 (which if the OP is comfortable doing then that would work) or an adult will have to ride with them to be allowed to ride.

Your kids are all over 7 and that makes a big difference.

Anyone under 7 needs someone 14 or older to ride with them. OP's 6 year old can't ride unless one of the adults in their party rides as well.

You can do Test Track. It's really not much scarier than driving in a car with the windows open on the highway. That being said...I get it, I am a ride wimp. I live in fear of having kids that want to ride those truly terrifying coasters at Six Flags. If your 6 year old will be 7 by the time of the trip, you could send them on alone and wait outside. If not, you'll either have to force yourself on or your kids will miss it. Or I guess you could hire an in-park babysitter who could take them on.

This is actually one of my big questions too. My DD who will be 12 at the time of our trip, is a HUGE coaster person. I am not, but want to see the theming in the line to ride. Can I walk with her up to getting on the ride, then take the "chicken exit"?

Yeah, with a 12 year old you are totally fine. I have chicken-exited at Tower of Terror many a time.

Thank you! TOT is going to be one she will def want to ride, but not walk through by herself. Oh to be young and have an iron stomach again!

I wouldn't be comfortable sending the 6 year old by herself even if she were allowed! Despite her love of thrill rides, she does have anxiety and will freak out at some of the oddest things! Since I had to go on the 7DMT last time I told DH it's his turn to have to endure a ride for the sake of the kids! Now RR is a whole other story...no way, not going to happen! :scared:

Mission Space and Test Track aren't coasters. Unless you're claustrophobic MS Green side is nothing. (Do not go on orange) Test Track is like riding in a convertible.

OP some adult is going to have to go with the 6 year old.

I'm very surprised you can ride Thunder but felt Seven was scary. 7 is the smoothest semi-fast dark ride I've ever been on!

My fear has more to do with steep drops than twists and turns. about 20 years ago I road a roller coaster (not at Disney) that had such a steep drop it literally knocked the air out of me and I have had a growing fear ever since and it seems to get worse with age! BTMR has some drops, but none are really steep. I am fine on Test Track as well, speed and turns are not an issue. I used to not have issue with SM, but I have not tried it in at least a decade. On Our last trip I rode 7DMT, because I was told it wasn't that bad...

Claustrophobic, don't like rides or motion....total wimp. I am a theme park's worst customer. But that's what I like about Disney - there are plenty of slow rides for me. :)

Most of the coasters at Disney don't have steep drops. Big Thunder doesn't, Space Mountain doesn't, Rock 'n Roller coaster doesn't (I don't think). I hate big drops too and the only one that really gets me is Everest. I've begrudgingly gone on it a few times due to my husband's prodding, and the rest of the ride is really fun. Dinosaur and Test Track aren't roller coasters and neither is Mission Space (that one is easy if you stick to the green side). I will say I haven't ridden 7DMT. I've only been to Disney once since it opened and I was pregnant. But I want to give it a try next time.

The only "thrill ride" at Disney I won't do is ToT. But someday if my son wants to ride it, I suppose I'll suck it up and go with him.

My favorite roller coaster is Rock 'n Roller coaster. Very smooth and the Aerosmith music really enhances the experience. And, like I said, I don't think there are any big drops. I've been on it a few times and never felt any.

But yeah, as prior posters have noted, the 6 year old will have to have an adult with her. So you'll need to decide if you're going to ride or let the 11 year old go on her own (at the risk of disappointing the 6 year old).

LOL, OP, I had to laugh about your dilemma:) You see, my daughterinlaw and soninlaw won't ride thrill rides, either. One gets sick, and one is just afraid! So, on the last trip together, gramma and grampa rode all the thrill rides with the 3 grandkids, and we had a ball doing it:)
Short of taking the grandparents, siblings, friends, I don't know what the answer is. Just wanted to tell how we did it. I do know that sometimes 6 y/o's say things that the older sibling says, but might change their minds when the time comes to ride these thrill rides. Hope all works out well.
