Ok..now before I begin I just want to say this is my opinion only as I know some people rave about HDDR so no flames please.
I dont know where to begin except this just was not our cup of tea. Hubby and I are pretty easy going and will laugh at about just anything. We like good slapstick and corny jokes but this place was just a complete nightmare.
We booked to go as a Mothersday treat and had the 5pm reservation. We has with us our son 8yrs old and baby 22 months.
I had called ahead of time like some people on here advised me to ask for something for the kids as they are pretty picky eaters. The lady I spoke to wasn't very nice and explained to me that they would not make them anything other than a Peanut butter jelly sandwich and that if my kids were picky then it was my problem. True yes it is my problem but not the answer I was expecting on the phone at all from her. Oh well.
We were told to come 30 mins before hand so thats what we did. Only to find out we had to wait in the scorching hot sun (it was 94deg that day). The only reason they tell you to come early was to take photos outside and charge you extra money. We politely declined as we were in a tight budget so had to hang about in the heat till the doors opened.
When the doors did open there was no orderly queueing...everybody just ran for it..the poor baby got about crushed to pieces I had to pick him up. The thing was too...you are already assigned your seat table so there really was no rush to get in at all...I guess it was to get cool.
The food itself wasnt bad..it wasnt brilliant but just ok. The chicken was really nice but the ribs...well the meat just didnt fall off the bone like it should have. My hubby ordered beer and I ordered a coke, the kids had sprite. After a while the server brought a big pitcher of beer to the table but no more soda for me or the kids despite me asking 3 times!! I really felt like I was bothering him. We did not get asked if we wanted any more food either. The kids took a little bit of bread but that was about it. They did offer mac and cheese but I was told that I should have called the previous day and asked for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well gee...it just wasnt worth arguing about was it..
Now onto the show. This was the worst bit...seriously..this was the worst 2 hours of my trip. The actors were terrible, the singing was awful, the supposed jokes were non existant...the guy that played sixbits looked like he just didnt want to be there. It was the most boring thing ever. They only interacted with 2 people in the front row and failed to even mention it was Mothersday when they were acknowledging birthdays and anniversaries. It was like it wasnt in the script so they couldnt mention it. Really..I just cant see what others see in this show...my DS8 constantly begged me to leave and the baby just wasnt interested at all. The performers looked like they were just going through the motions and alot of the so called jokes were lost as the audience just didnt laugh at them. I hate to pick on anyone but there was this one actress..she had this scary face..wide eyes and big scary teeth...terrible laugh that we figured was put on for the show. I prayed to the heavens to never let me see or hear her again as long as I lived. Little did I know the heavens had a warped sense of humor...she later appeared in Playhouse disney as a presenter 2 days later...and guess what...that was her REAL laugh!!!!!
There was one saving grace that amused me and hubby. This kid at the next table from us that looked like he hadnt been fed for a week. We were mesmerized with him shoveling in his food. He would constantly keep shoveling without stopping, swallowing only every 6 shovels until the plate was empty and only breathing at the end, sitting back in his chair out of breath holding his stomach. Another couple were laughing at him too..he was sitting with what looked like a big family so Im guessing he had to be fast or last!
The bit that really irked me tho was the end...I waited patiently for my strawberry shortcake all night...the kids did too as they had nothing to eat really. They bring it out and then tell us we had to share one between two!!! What??????? Im not a big eater and normally do share a dessert but no way were these sized to share..Im sorry..but they just werent big enough for our family to consider doing that.. we ended up giving a whole one to my DS8 and hubby, me and the baby shared the other one.
The show came to a close right after the shortcake..ahem! and the actors left very quickly. I noticed some people wanting photos but they didnt hang around for them..they just waved and left.
Upon reflection Im glad we did try it but NO way would I ever go back again. It was mothersday and I had my family around me so I cant say it was a washout. I do urge people to go to You tube though and see it for yourself to decide. I did go check it out before hand but though they had just recorded the boring bits,,,no folks..what you see on you tube is the funniest it gets. I know some people love it and go every year but it just wasnt our cup of tea...we found it mega boring with mediocre food and actors that looked like they really didnt want to be there and were just running through a lamely written script.
As i said though...just our opinion..if you ask us...we just Hoop Dee wouldnt again.

I am sorry you didn't enjoy your meal or show. Promise no flames from me, but we are a family that loves it. So, instead of a discussion how about a . Here's hoping you do find that "one" meal or show that brings on the magic!

Thanks for the review. We are still trying to decide if we want to do this for me, hubby and 7 children. On the fence right now and this was sooooo helpful and perfect timing!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience. We've been really debating whether or not to do this next trip, and your review gives some good perspective.

our favorites. I ate there the first time in 77 and it's a must do for us at least every other trip. My wife and I got engaged there, had our wedding reception there and our honeymoon there. In total I have eaten there more than 20 times and I have never had a bad experience with the food (even though it changes occasionally) the service or the players.

Sorry you had a bad experience....

Sorry you didn't enjoy HDDR. We are trying it for the first time next week. Your review makes me a little nervous, but I figure I will give it a try for myself. Just wondering what number you are supposed to call to get choices for the kids? Do you call the WDW-DINE line or is there a direct number?

DW and I have done the HOOP back in 93, 95 and 99. The last time we enjoyed ourselves, but flt the entire experience has lost the magic for us. Now that we are DVC, we plan on enjoying the TS eats around the park.

Sorry your HOOP was less than desired, it happens from time to time.

I have to concur with the OP. We did the Hoop-De-Doo a couple of years ago. The show was so-so and the food was a major disappointment.

As I was reading this, it reminded me of the Spirit of Aloha Luau at the Polynesian we did 3 years ago. We started on a 90 some odd degree day, poor service, mediocre food and with the entertainment being dull and just not our cup of tea. Definitely felt jipped paying two table service credits. With that being said, we are planning the Hoop De Doo in October, and I hope we have better luck than you did and what we had for the Luau!

We went for the first time in April. Had a really good time. Sixbits was my favorite. We were the middle table near the stage and he played to us the whole night. I usually don't like to be in the spot light like that... but he made it fun.

Not something I would do every trip... but will do it again.
Nancy

love the schtick*, love the food, love the awesome interaction and go back almost every trip, sorry it wasnt your thing, thx 4 sharing tho!

(those 2 pix of your kids are DARLING!)

No flames from me. I went to the HDDR once. Never again. My experience was not quite as bad as yours. No one was rude and the service was OK. So many people rave about it and I am totally lost as to why. I too have no problem with corny or musical shows. As a matter of fact, I went to see Davy Jones on Mothers day weekend and had a blast.

I just don't get the hype. Nothing was horrible but nothing was good either and not worth my time or money. It was one of those experiences where you say: "That's three hours of my life that I will never get back". For all of you who love it-you can have my seat anytime.

I hope the rest of your day was nice.:goodvibes

Just my 2 cents here:

We did HDDR for the first time when we used the DDP and loved it. Sure the entertainment is cheesy but it is supposed to be. To me and my family the food was fine. We're not talking gourmet eats here, but all the food was tasty and hot. We had no complaints. As for the seating, it was very orderly. We handed our ticket at the door and were escorted to our table without incident or stampede. Very orderly.

We visited again a few years later with BIL, SIL and their DD3. and DD9 Absolutely no complaints from anyone. Even DD3 loved it. She was clapping and dancing with the show and absolutely enjoyed herself. She even ate! That was a first as well.

Now I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion and maybe HDDR was not the OP's cup of tea and they are entitled to that but please don't let one person's opinion discourage all newbies from trying it as well and let them judge it for themselves. We were a little apprehensive as well the first time because we read some mixed reviews, but then I thought that if this show has been at WDW for as long as I can remember it has to be something to see and do at least once.

I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience :( We went in March and it was a highlight of our trip. The acting was superb, as was the food. We went for the latest show, though, maybe that had something to do with it. Again, so sorry it wasn't as magical as it should have been

Also sorry that you didn't enjoy it. We've been twice now and enjoyed it both times. The first time was more enjoyable than the second, but still something on my to-do list. We are going again in September.

Now I have a similar experience to share with O'Hana. This was always a must do and we even paid out of pocket rather than DP. The last two years we have gone, we have gotten terrible service and the food and menu has gone downhill over the years. Others still rave about it, but for us - two bad years in a row and we are done.

Sometimes people get so hyped up about things, expecting quite a bit, and then are disappointed. Given what you had heard and then having to wait in the heat and the crush of people, definitely set things off on the wrong foot. Note: Bottomless beer/wine would have definitely made the show funner though. LOL!

Again, I'm sorry you had a bad experience and, also, hope that you find that magical Disney dining experience at another of their many restaurants.

We did the Luau in 98 and I hated it. The food was awful and the show was a snooze. Literally. I fell asleep!! We did HDDR this last trip and loved it. Of course, YMMV, but the rest of my family does it every trip and they've never been disappointed.

Every show and every restaurant can have an off night. Sounds like this might have been one of them. That's why I read as many reviews as I can and kind of average them together. ;)
