I should start off by saying this is a very unusual trip for us. I think that ten nights is perfect for a WDW get away. This trip will be 22 nights. 6nights at the GF, 4 at the AKL concierge and 12 at the VWL. It's a bit crazy.
We usually split a stay at the Polynesian and AKL concierge. I decided this time to give the GF a try. I thought that I would give a standard room a try. I requested a ground floor room in the Big Pine Key and that is what we got :)
The highlights of that trip include great service, beautiful rooms, a wonderful beach, fun children's activites, great dining, fantastic views everywhere, the extra little touches found in your room and of course being right next to the MK. We had a great stay.
The disappointments were only with the Mousekeeter Club and the fact that the GF is a convention hotel.
We had another wonderful stay at the AKL concierge. The last time we were there was during hurrican Charley. The highlights there include doing the Wanyama Safari. This is just amazing. I have read glowing reports, but I had no idea how wonderful it would be. My kids went to Simba's and enjoyed it so much that they went back another night. This was our first time using the Kid's Club at WDW. We also enjoyed doing many of the activites that they offer at the resort. This was our fourth visit and we never really had the time to enjoy them. My kids had a great time earning their beads.
The only disappointment I had with the AKL is that they were doing some work down at the pool. It was very loud and quite an eyesore. We stay at this resort to relax and hang out at the pool. We left early on our last day because of the refurbishment.
We checked into the VWL on a Thursday it was nice and quiet. We were able to get our room. I have enjoyed our January visits to the WL. I wasn't as excited to stay at the VWL, but I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the rooms more than I thought I would. I knew it was going to be busy at WDW and I was worried about the crowds. The Villas are so quiet and peaceful. There's nothing like having a drink on your balcony while watching the deer below. It is wonderful having the space and cooking some food in a kitchen. We still have 4 more nights here. The highlights include great dining, relaxing at the beach, biking to Ft. Wilderness and enjoying a swim at the quite pool.
The disappointments are the crowds at the main pool. People are saving chairs and it's not even worth going over there. The quite pool at the Villa's is my favorite resort quite pool, so we really enjoy it.
The crowds are insane this week. It was pretty crowded our first week in April and then it was quite the next week. We go to the parks about every other day. Tomorrow we are going to Chef Mickeys for breakfast. Then we're biking over to Ft. Wilderness to canoe. Then will head back over there for the camfire.
I did find that during this trip we all really missed the Polynesian. I tried to see if we could stay the weekend there, but the only room available at WDW this weekend is a two bedroom suite at the BWI.
We're having a great time :sunny:

it sounds like you're having a wonderful trip. thanks for posting. please write as much as you can think of about vwl, i've been thinking of staying there in a two bedroom for christmas. :) i don't see very many posts about it.

Thank you SO much for the report on the AKL pool! How bad is the construction? Is it noise 24/7 or only during certain parts of the day? I ask because were spending part of our honeymoon there in May (arriving at the AKL on the 23rd) and if the pool construction is very bad we may transfer to another resort instead. Like is it a LOT of construction, or just a small area that will be done quickly? Thanks so much and we can't wait for the full report once you get back on everything!

If you are looking for info on the VWL you should check the DVC boards. There is always lots of good info there. Barb

Sounds like you are having a great stay! Thanks for posting!

Sounds like a fantasitc and restful trip. Sorry about the construction noise at AKL. Can't wait to hear how the final week goes. Thanks for sharing.

spoon full of sugar I think the Villas would be a great choice for December. I always think of it as our Winter resort. I really enjoy the peacefulness the Villas offer. We have a very nice woods view with the lake beyond the trees. My kids enjoy watching the EWP from our room. The quiet pool is next to the Villas. It is my favorite WDW quiet pool. You're close to the bus stop and it's nice now that there is a bus to the MK. There is self parking close to the Villas. The resort is at capacity, but it never feels busy at the Villas. Our housekeeper has done a great job. You get to enjoy the amenities of the WL, but be able to get away from the crowds. Have a great stay. If there is anything in particular you want to know just ask.
DAWGPOUNDAJ, the pool construction is done at the AKL. We went over there for dinner tonight and the pool looks great. You must have dinner at Jiko. It was one of our best meals ever!
One thing I learned on our Safari is that many people don't know that there is good animal viewing on the stairwells. If you go to the stairwell at the end of the Zebra trail you get a view of both Savannas that you normally wouldn't be able to see unless your room was located there. Certain times of the day they have the animals go into the holding pens that are located there. When we went once to view them there were a bunch of animals getting out of their pens. It was really neat to see them all walking back to the Savanna. Have a wonderful trip. The AKL is one of my favorite places. The sights, smells and sounds are incredible.

Tomorrow is our last full day at WDW. We're going to the MK and Epcot. We came in April because my dh had a conference. I don't think we will come back in April. It's just too crowded. We've had a great time, but when you have heavy crowds for over a week it can be overwhelming. We've been able to enjoy the resorts and the things they offer. It's amazing when you are at WDW for a long time and there still isn't enough time to get it all in! I guess that is why there is always another vacation to plan :wave2:

22 days @ WDW :earseek: :earboy2: :smooth: :teeth: I've heard of people going for 10 days, 14 days maybe but never 22 days in one trip. I'm glad you're having a wonderful time but 22 days? I'm afraid to even ask what your lodging bill looks like :rotfl:

Wow! How amazing to be at WDW for 22 days, especially at such nice resorts. :) We own at VWL and agree about how nice it is to have peace and quiet after a hectic day at the parks and how wonderful Hidden Springs Pool is! :)

I did have a question for you re: your GF stay if you don't mind --

Could you elaborate a little on how the convention part was a negative? Dh and I are considering a stay at GF Concierge for our 15th anniversary next year (I figured it'd be romantic) and I'm looking to hear all the good and bad about the resort. I know how busy the Contemporary can get with all the convention traffic but I guess I wasn't expecting that atmosphere at the GF. Would love to hear more details if you don't mind!

Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!

You don't want to see the bill :earseek: We've stayed here for so long because my dh had a conference the first week of April, we had realatives come the third week and we have a wedding down South the last week. We just moved from Denver to Philly and we don't have a house yet. We drove from Denver to Philly dropped off our stuff in storage and came down to Florida. My 4 yr old keeps telling everyone we're homeless :)

It just seemed like it was one convention after another. I felt like I was intruding on some office party. Every night you got to see the private parties going on in the Summerhouse. It probably didn't help that we were staying in Big Pine Key which is next to the summer house. You might not see as many conventioneers if you are in a concierge room. I'm sure they aren't staying in concierge. Many of them were staying in our building, so it seemed as if they were everywhere. People were dressed up for work and we're trying to get away from that. I'm just not use to staying at a convention hotel while I'm at WDW. I think it is a romantic resort, which is kind of strange to me that it is a convention hotel.

mirlow, thanks so much for the elaboration. I totally understand what you mean by feeling like you were intruding on an office party...I felt the same way at the Contemporary (even though it's much more convention-oriented and more to be expected there).

Thanks again for the reply! (And I hope you find a new home soon!) ;)

How far of a walk are the villas from the main building? I have been considering a stay here but thought it seemed a bit remote.

I'm not mirlow, but I can answer that! :) It's about a 30-second walk from the main WL lobby (under a covered walkway) to the lobby of the villas. :) Not physically remote, but very peaceful, so it *feels* remote.
