DOH!!! I was afraid of this!! We were scheduled to work at a food bank that is only held once a month. It was to be this Wed. evening & I just got an email that between the blizzard this past weekend and a forecast for another storm Tue-Wed of yet another 10-20 inches it was being cancelled. :headache: They are not sure if it will get rescheduled and the one for next month may be full already. We go to Disney at the end of March so we don't have much time to plan for something else. :guilty: DRAT!!!!!

I swear I'm goin' out groundhog huntin'!! I think he'd taste like chicken if I BBQ'd him with a little mesquite and had some sauce on the side!! :lmao:

Oh I'm so sorry for you!! I finally found a linus project blanket to do. Mapquest said it was a 2 hour drive for me one way. I wasn't excited about the drive, but in reality it was only an hour and fifteen minutes. So I had 2 1/2 hours drive time plus the time in making the blankets, which was fun. Maybe you can find a linus project with an hour or two of your home? Worth it in my opinion. Not just for the voucher, but for the child who will receive the blanket.

I'm in the Baltimore area and I've signed up to bring a dish to the Ronald McDonald House - maybe there's a similar event in the DC area??

We received a few inches shy of 3 feet on Saturday! Crazy!!

:lmao: You are assuming that I can sew a button on and get it to stay!! :rotfl2: When DS was in Cub Scouts I used to put all of his patches on his shirt with that heat sensitive iron-on tape crap! But then I could never wash the shirt 'cuz they would fall off!!:rotfl: I used to dress him RIGHT before their meetings & then yank the shirt back off of him as soon as he got home, before he could get it dirty! I don't think making blankets is "my thing"!! I do not even have a sewing machine! When a hem comes out it goes to Goodwill. I am SOOO bad!!:sad2:

I signed my DH and SIL up for this Thursday. They are voluteering at the habitat for humanity. They are doing their service in one of the stores. There were lots of type of service you can perform there. They are in Leesburg, VA. Maybe they have something similar in your area.

Thanks. All of the Habitat for Humanity stuff for our area was age 15 +. :sad2: Shame they offer such limited choices for kids to help too. Leesburg is not far as the crow flies but no direct route to drive...best to either take White's Ferry (which I never have good luck with in the winter) or to drive north to Frederick then take backroads to Point of Rocks & down...about 50 - 60 min. I guess probably either way. But we really wanted DS to do this too... I will try first to see if they will reschedule the food bank and see if we can get into that. If not then I'll revisit the list.:goodvibes

I could have written this. My DS was scheduled for a monthly food pantry this past Sunday and it too was canceled due to snow.
My DH and I did our GAD on Sat so we are good to go. (DS is in college) We are going the end of March.
I contacted the food pantry but haven't heard back.
Worst comes to worst I buy 1 ticket.:sad1:

you could make the no sew fleece blanket. That seems simple enough. You cut strips on the ends and tie them together.

Not sure if this will help...
If you log in like you usually do and then after plugging in your zip code,
SCROLL to very bottom..you will see a LINK for additional options..its where we found our opportunity...it is an area for additional companies also recognized that are looking for volunteers..we were able to find something within a week of sign up and were done and got our vouchers within 4-5 days of that. It was great cause we were turned away twice (places were swamped w/volunteers anywhere near us) and then we saw these NEW opportunities that for whatever reason were NOT on the main page. Good Luck!:wizard:

I went back thru the list this morning looking for this Project Linus thing and found one 35 miles from us but it says this on the description:

Blanketeers are needed to make infant sized blankets for the Neonatal Intensive Care Units in lour local hospitals. Blankets should be hand made, made with new kid friendly fabric, and should measure approximately 36"x "36 to 40"x "48.

We are NOT accepting no-sew fleece at this time.

I found a couple of opportunities at a Horse Rescue place about 16 miles from us. After I connect with the food bank place to see if it will be rescheduled or not I might look to this as an alternate idea. I also found an opportunity to make ribbons for MADD in Loudoun Co., VA. THAT might be a good one 'cuz we can make them at home even tho I will have to drive over there to pick up the materials and then take them back when we're done. They are looking for people to make at least 500 each and put them on cards. It's funny how the opportunities sort by distance but it's all done "as the crow flies". CareerBuilder does the same thing. It will say a job is 14 or 15 miles away yet there is no way to DRIVE it like that. We have to cross the Potomac River and there are only a couple of ways to get across so it really takes like an hour to get there.

I really hope the food bank reschedules as it is only 8 miles from us AND as a bonus my DS can get credit for SSL hours that he's required to get for school. It is also held on Wednesdays which happens to be a "free" day for us. (DH takes classes on Mon, Tues & Thurs and DS has swim practice on Sun, Mon & Fri so our "free" time as a family is pretty limited).

Yes, knew the age limit. Since the granddaughters are 5 and 2, it's not a deal breaker for us. The GS is 16, but no interest in doing it. Good luck, but it's a pain to have to start the process all over again.

Well I just got an email to say that our food bank opportunity is being rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 22. DS usually has swim practice that night but there IS another practice on Wed. that we could do instead, so we'll flip our nights. DH cannot go on Mondays though but at least DS and I can attend. I will look into something else for DH. We are there for 2 days before the blackout dates start over spring break so we'd hoped to take advantage of the fast passes in 3 parks over these 2 days and if we didn't make all 3 before 11:00 then I figured we could get the figurine thing for the 3rd voucher.

NOW we have to hope that we don't get ANOTHER storm that weekend!!:scared: Winter is not over yet!

The blizzard got us too. Had to cancel this morning. We had too many roads closed here in Charles Town, WV and no one was going anywhere. There was no way anyone wanted to take route 9 over the mountain to Leesburg. I cancelled our commitment and rescheduled for next Tuesday. My daughter is still waiting to go to work in Frederick, MD (Citi) because as of noon, rt. 340 was still closed (she is way too dedicated for me). Me, another day off thanks to the USG! Tomorrow is my day off, so I'm done for the week. 11 days off (counting Prez Monday off) and didn't have to use any leave, of course it would've been nicer had I been in WDW during these free day offs.

We are in MD too. I have expressed interest in two events. It has been two weeks, and neither have responded.:confused3

You should call or email the contact person provided on the response email from Hands On Network. I volunteered for a project and never had a response for 10 days. I figured it was due to all the blizzards we are having. When I finally called the person told me they have no opportunities to volunteer at this time. I thought it was rude that no one at least emailed me. I almost missed out on our current project. We are making blankets for "Binky Patrol". They will also accept blankets by mail if anyone is interested. They are located in Narberth, PA. :lovestruc
