Our First Universal-Only Vacation

Let me start off by saying we are huge Disney fans and WDW will always be our first love. Prior to last year, Universal was a one day stop and I typically resented having to leave Disney property to do so.

Last year changed that. We spent four night at the RPR and five days at the parks and loved every minute of it. We also spent 10 days at Disney after we left Universal. I have been on Disney forums for a few years now and have read more than a few Disney-Universal comparison threads. So when we did our trip last May, I was looking for the differences between the two destinations. I wanted to see if Disney was better maintained and cleaner, with better customer service and quality attractions.

Just my opinion: There were no noticeable differences. Obviously, WDW is larger, with much more to do and many more resort and dining options. And, obviously, Disney gets the nod in the nostalgia and magic department. And yes, Universal is sorely lacking in the character and fireworks departments. But other than that, I thought Universal was on par with Disney in every other department, except price, which Universal clearly has the edge (with cheaper ticket options and better resort bargains). We found both parks to be spotless and the employees to be just as friendly as we have always found Disney's cast members to be. Were there exceptions? Of course. But we found the occasional mess on Disney property and at least a couple of not-so-pleasant cast members too.

Anyway, that brings me to the topic of this thread. We did something that I would have never thought possible even a few years ago. We booked a Universal-only vacation. We will be staying at the Portofino for 9 nights and hopefully visiting all 5 parks (US, IOA, Sea World, Wet -n- Wild and Busch Gardens). Do we need 9 days? No. I am sure we could see everything we wanted to in those parks in 5 days. But you could do MK is a day too. That doesn't mean it's a good idea. We are going the last to weeks of August and will report in detail how a Universal-only vacation goes from a Disney fan's perspective.

I agree totally with your view of how Universal compares with Disney. Well said. I think you will really enjoy your nine nights at Universal. The most we have stayed there has been five nights but we didn't do Seaworld and BG. I don't think you will get bored. You will have plenty of time to sleep late and relax (you know, like a non themepark vacation!) The more we visit Disney and Universal the more time we spend enjoying the great hotels. It is nice to have a leisurely pace and not be in Commando mode all of the time. Have a great trip.

I started my Disney trips in 1958 and have been going ever since. I'm glad the mouse moved to Florida. The biggest difference I can see is FOTL. The lines at WDW wear me out! We have commando toured WDW since 1993 but at Universal we can chill with FOTL.

You can fill 9 days if going at a slower pace. SWF is 2 day park. A good idea for SWF is to visit early in the morning, and then visit on another day late in the afternoon so you can see the last Shamu Rocks show. With that much time, you can go on multiple mornings and do the different tours they have. The Penguin tour is amazing. You have to sign up first thing in the morning just as you enter the park, then the tour starts around lunch time.

Visit WnW early one morning because the slides have short lines. Stay until the afternoon, go back to your hotel to rest, and then go to the Dixie Stampede dinner show. The food is great, and it's a nice show.

BGT is 1 day, could be 2 if you want to drive back over there, because Sheikra will be opening May 21st. You could do the Safari tour and that would use up a few hours in the morning.

I'd rent the car, even if that means paying for gas, and parking fees. That way you can drive back and forth between the parks, visit grocery stores, and explore the restaurants and other shows on I-Drive.
