Our first trip to WDW was mostly a success

Hey everyone the name's Chris and this is how our first trip to Disney world went. After many years of wishful thinking and planning our family FINALLY went on our first WDW vacation and it was mostly a success with a few bumps. I went once probably 26-17 years ago when I was 9 or 10. I can still to this day remember a lot about many of the rides I went on. Well one day back in probably March of last year the wife and I seriously sat down and looked at prices and if it could be done. Not only did we realize it could be done but we could also stay at a resort and stay for the max 10 days because the price per day only increased a little per day. So October last year we took the plunge and booked our vacation to WDW. Originally we wanted to wait until the day of the trip to tell the kids. Bot were we wrong about that. Watching videos we found out that having the kids involved would make things easier and fun for them and us. So Christmas morning they opened their "big gift" from us. Our oldest instantly knew what the balloons meant. Our youngest on the other hand had the most confused look on her face.

Bla bla bla fast forward to the day of our trip.

We arrived in Orlando and took their bus to our resort Port Orleans Riverside. Checked in and they said our room would be ready later in the afternoon. So off to Magic Kingdom we went. The girls were bouncing off the wall with excitement and so was the wife since it was the first time for them. Got to MK just in time for their afternoon parade and had a perfect spot for the floats and characters. When the parade was done my oldest was in tears. I of course being a dad didn't notice at first, it was also hard to hear because of the music. Come to find out later she was crying because her favorite character Alice stopped and gave her a hug. That made her day. We then went immediately to ride both Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion. They were both exactly how I remembered them, with some minor changes to pirates to add the Jack Sparrow twist to it. Haunted Mansion also was exactly how I remembered it but with upgraded hitch hiking ghosts. The first ride I was with my oldest and the wife was with the youngest. We got the ghost that pulls your soul out and the wife got the one with the lantern. Rest of the day at the park was spent walking around with jaws open and misty eyes. When we went back to the resort since our room was ready the view could of been a little better but still was an awesome room. Our room was on the third floor which seemed great at first. But the elevator was always slow and taking the stairs was faster. Bot was getting a third floor room a mistake. You get exhausted in the summer heat even if we are use to it. Next time we are asking for ground floor I think. That night we did a quick service dinner at our rschool sort and then went back to MK to do some more rides and watch the Main Street electric parade.

Next morning getting up for breakfast and the days fun is when the real fun began. I'll save day two for my next post. Let's just say deluxe dining plan for a family that doesn't eat a lot for one meal was a big mistake. Not doing that again.

Can't wait for the rest! How old are your daughters? They sound like real troopers to do so much in the first day!

The kids are 15 and 11. Honestly it sounds like we did a lot the day we arrived but really I don't think it was that much. We did way more during the other days.

Now on to day 2 let the fun begin. From here on out things are gonna get kind of fuzzy because we were there for so long and did so much. Thank god the wife and I took a lot of picture and also had memory maker to help keep our stories in order.

Beginning of day two everybody felt like death because we had to get up early enough to get to Be our guest for breakfast. Got to MK in time to see the opening ceremony that they do. Of course nobody told us that there was a special entrance for people to get to their breakfast reservations so we had to wait until gates opened. Side note I love how they try to treat people coming into the park first thing in the morning like they are part of a parade and keep them behind some kind of rope they have going across the street. We started out in the middle of that group behind the rope carriers then quickly noticed people walking on the side walk to get to either rides or their reservations. So we move to the side walk after a few pictures of the castle without hordes of people in front of it and this annoying cast member told me to get behind the rope. I looked at her and ask why are you treating us like we are part of some stupid parade we have a reservation to get to and because you refused to let us in o we could see the opening show and are now leading us like cattle going to slaughter we will be late. Well that changed her attitude and she finally let us go. I still don't understand why the F they make people stay behind that rope. After that we knew where the special entrance was and also got there early enough for the extra magic hours too. Breakfast like I said was at Be our guest in the west wing and it was awesome. The kids and wife loved it and I got a bunch of pictures. Now this was the part that made the wife tear up a little and almost cry. She said that when she walked into the main eating area where Belle and Beast have their big dance that made her all teary eyed because she felt like she was in the actual movie.

Now onto the food. HOLY CRAP DO THEY FEED YOU A TON AND A HALF ON THE DELUXE PLAN. If we do it again we will be doing one of the lower level plans. We knew that the plan came with 3 meals a day and we thought that would be good. What we didn't know was that lunch and dinner no matter if it's table service or quick service comes with main course and a dessert. We thought we would lose weight from all the walking and sweating, HA, we probably stayed the same weight or gained weight. Some dinners even had an appetizer. I told my wife they are like the evil witch in Hansel and Gretel trying to make us eat and get fat. Any ways meals were planned out by my wife. Most mornings were some kind of character breakfast, lunch would be a quick service, and dinner would be a character breakfast too. well like I said with all the food that they feed you we found it hard to eat everything most times and by the time we would be hungry for lunch it was almost time for dinner. I think part of the problem was the heat just screwing with us and not making us hungry.

As far as rides the first day we did a bunch we did pirates and haunted house again, we probably did it every time we were at MK because everyone loved it so much. 7 dwarves mine train was great but we only did it a few times the whole trip because lines were crazy long. I told my wife we should of saved all the fast passes for that ride. Also fast pass is great but also a joke. they say you get 3 for the day and another 1 or 2 when you are in a park. What my wife didn't know when making fast pass choices was that all 3 need to be used up in order to make your in park choices. This sucked because when she would choose rides she had times spread out all over the place. One in the morning, one in the late afternoon after our break, and then one for after dinner. Again lesson learned don't spread out fast passes like that next time.

Dinner was at Cinderella's royal table and that by far was one of my favorite for many reasons. The food was great the visiting princesses, Snow White, Jasmine, Arora, Ariel, were all so fun to talk to. Even our server was great. He talked about how he had been there for over 20 years. He even gave the girls and my wife the magic fairy wands and me a sword which made the girls laugh. The next time we ate there was for breakfast one day and the server was good but only gave wands to the kids and nothing for us parents, BOOOO, whatever. After dinner we walk out and it's close to 9 and the are in front of the castle and down main street is PACKED. I ask a cast member and she said that the electrical parade was getting ready to start. YAY!! I was hoping to see this and have the girls see it. This might sound cheesy but I saw this as a kid when I was 9 or 10 and loved it. When the lights went out and the cheesy electronic voice and music started this was what made me tear up a little. mainly because this will be the girls first time seeing it and the last time it will be at WDW since it's moving to Disneyland in September. The girls and wife loved it but agreed the music is so horribly dated. I'm surprised they never updated it ever. Seeing the classic Pete's Dragon float brought a huge grin to my face because I loved the movie and the float when I was younger.

Day 3 and on started getting a lot harder. At this point I have the most painful blisters I have ever had on my middle toe on both feet and boy did it hurt to walk. My friend warned me to take breaks during the day because you would be tired. She never told me that we would be sore all over our body. The day was spent at Epcot. Breakfast was at I think it's called Garden Grill, The one that rotates slowly with views of the top of one of the rides. It's the place in the same building as Soarin', or as I heard a ton of people calling it Soaring. After breakfast with Mickey, Pluto, and Chip and Dale which were a huge hit with the girls it was off for the rides. First up because of the short line was Soarin' This was probably my favorite ride at epcot behind Mission Space, we'll get to that ride later. when we get on Soarin' we had second row middle section seats which were great because the screen covered our complete field of view. After that we did the boat ride that takes you through four types of land and then the epcot green house. This ride was also a hit with the family. After that because of the fast pass selection my wife made it was on to Soarin' again. This time I grab my phone and try to record it, of course my phone was in portrait mode and not landscape so I miss the sides. When I go on the ride again a few days later I record in land scape but miss the bottom part of the ride and the whole thing is out of focus.
After Soarin' we make our way over to the building that has journey into imagination. Boy was that a cheesy ride, Tell me why this was our 15 year olds favorite ride probably out of all the parks. After that I spot the jumping water lilly pad things that I loved when I went with my parents. This was a hit with the kids because they timed it right to catch the water and spray each other. Next up was Mission Mars I think. Now this is where the trip starts to take a slow downward spiral. I don't think it's even noon yet and already the oldest starts saying she's tired, soar, bla bla bla. But she still wants to do the ride. We notice there are two versions of the ride the gentle version and the spinning g force version. should of gone green instead of orange. Just as we climb into the ride the oldest tells us she is feeling weak because she is hot and tired, BLA what ever kid if you didn't spend all day in your room and went outside and act like a kid you would be fine. The ride ends and now the kid looks like she's either gonna puke or pass out. I feel weird but that's because I haven't done a ride like that in forever. Anyways the kid takes so long to move from the bench at the exit that the workers tell her she needs to go outside. for like the next hour or more the kid is acting like a baby crying shaking, basically being a brat because she wants to go back to the resort. After awhile she finally feels like normal and we do the future ride inside the Epcot golf ball which is what the kids and wife call it. After that we are getting tired and our feet are killing us so we go back to the room. late afternoon we head back to Epcot for some more rides like the Nemo ride and a few more. On the way to Akershush in Norway we find Anna and Elsa's summer home and get pictures and autographs from them. That reminds me the first probably day and a half we completely forget to bring the kids autograph books. After that we made sure it was packed in their bags. Akershus was Snow White, Mulan, and Cinderella. At this point I begin to notice there are some really pretty princess characters and some that need to retire. these were some of the good ones. OH also one cool thing about the meal plans and where we get to eat I got to eat tons of food that I would never even think of touching here at home. Our dinner time was kind of late so we never got to see Epcot's big night time show, we did get to watch it from our window during dinner.

Day four is Animal Kingdom breakfast at our resort and then we're off. The Safari ride was a hit with the family. Everybody loved the lion king live show and I got some cool shots of the performers. Expedition Everest was so much fun and we did that multiple times. we all loved looking at the tree of life too, I had no idea that there are 300 animals in the tree. I wish I could remember where it was we had dinner. All I can remember was that it was at 5 in the afternoon and it was buffet style with Goofy, Mickey, Donald and Daisy. Unfortunately we never got to stay for the new awakening of the tree at night. Yet another thing we have to see next time.

Day 5 was breakfast at Crystal Palace with Winnie the Pooh and friends. OMG Eeyore was by far my favorite because of how he does the little prep thing with his arms and then rests the books inches from his eyes while signing. I was dying laughing every time he did it. This was an early breakfast so when we got in the park there was almost no one in the park and we got lots of cool photos. We also did a bunch of new rides like Buzz lightyear which I got high score on. Then we did what ended up being our favorite ride as a family Stitches great escape. The reason n we love it was not because of the ride itself but because of the reaction of all the little kids screams of terror when the lights go out and stitch escapes and the fun stats. OMG we left that ride laughing so hard. Also the people mover was a big hit with the family because it let us sit for a few minutes. My wifes least favorite ride that probably everyone hates was carousel of progress. As soon as the kids figured this out they sang the song on repeat which made the kids and I laugh and my wife looked like she wanted to kill us.

Hollywood studio was fun but definitely a one day visit maybe two if there is a large crowd. Tower of terror was so much fun as was Star Tours. I didn't find out until one morning watching the Disney tv station where they talk about parks and rides that Star Tours has over 50 different random versions of the ride they do. I really wanted to do back on that ride but the line was always long.

One of the last days we finally got to go to typhoon lagoon. That day was a bust for multiple reasons. One lines for rides were long so we didn't get to do much. Then when it came to lunch time. the wife and kids went to one place I went to another to get food I wanted. I told the guy I was on the dining plan and he still charged me for the food and drink. A quick talk to the front desk when I found out and things were fixed. So after I get my food I go back to find the wife and kids and they are still waiting for their food. 30 minutes after ordering their food they finally get it. Unfortunately the bees were out in force where we were and the youngest went into panic attack mode at this point. Because of the screw up they ask my wife does anybody have food allergies. She told them no. Next thing she knows they are handing her the sand pale ice cream thing they sell fully loaded to the top with ice cream and every topping. And this is where the day goes to hell. As soon as they sit down the bees come out in force swarming the ice cream and our food. No matter where we go the bees follow us. We have to throw the ice cream away because it's so bad. And what does the kid who's having a panic attack over the bees have for lunch? Waffle with powdered sugar and sweet strawberries and bananas. Nobody gets to eat anything because of the bees. After that we decide to do some more rides but first we need to re apply sun block. Up until this day I had been using the lotion type but it was left back at our room so I need to use the spray kind. Well I don't know what the hell happened but after putting some on we walk towards the coaster ride and suddenly my face and shoulders are on fire. I try rubbing my eyes and it feels better for a little bit. But when we get to the line for the ride my face feels like the fires of hell are all over my face. I book it to the kiddy pool and try rubbing it off and it sort of helps. When I get up the burning starts up again. So I go to the showers and try soap and even that doesn't help. Day's a bust so we go back to our room. by the time we get on the bus I finally start to feel better.

Next morning we have Breakfast at 1900 park fair with Marry Poppins, Alice, Mad Hatter, and Tigger. So up to this point Alice had been the oldest kids favorite, Still is but Mad Hatter comes in at a close second now. OMG this guy was so F'in hilarious I was laughing so hard I started getting hiccups. This mad Hatter was crazy and saying so many funny things. But what made our family love him was the faces he would make during photos. Every person eating there taking pictures with him got a different look from him. He told the girls to say mustard when I took a picture. The girls had the biggest grins on their face and he looked so goofy. Next table got an angry face from him, The table after that he had a confused look, After that something different. Then near the end of our meal. Alice starts freaking out along with the Mad Hatter and screaming something about tea. We look over to see a waiter walking out with a very fancy looking tea cup. Turns out someone was getting engaged. This was probably the third one we've seen at the parks. First one was during dinner at Cinderella's royal table.

So now I'll fast forward to the last full day we are gonna be at WDW. We got a late start because at this point we've done every park once and the plan was to stay in MK until the end of the day to see the parade and fireworks and then see the goodnight kiss or what ever it was called. a bunch of people said to see this. We warned the kids that because of dinner plans and our late start this was gonna be a long day. They promised they could handle this and wouldn't complain. Well that didn't last long before the oldest started *****ing that she was tired and feeling dizzy. But at this point it was only a few hours before our dinner reservation and we don't have time to go back to the room and rest. Well I finally had enough and lose it with my oldest and told her to stop being a baby and if she would stop Sitting around all day she wouldn't feel tired all day. Of course she starts crying and crap and where does she decide to have this break down? right at the circle in front of the castle right when they are doing their block party dance with the speakers blasting the music at full blast. HOLY HELL was this giving me a headache and not helping. So we make our way to the Sonic diner place in tomorrow land and choose a booth far away from people to just rest and cool down. One of the guys working there asked if things were ok. My wife told him it was just the heat and we just needed to cool down. I went to get us some ice water. A few minutes later he comes back with four brownie mini cake things saying they are on the house. That cheered everybody up and after awhile we were back to normal and having fun doing some rides waiting for the parade and fireworks. When we finished dinner and started walking around we found an ok spot in the circle to see the parade but it was perfect for the fireworks because it was near the small fences and the people in front promised they would stay seated during the fireworks, seriously why the hell do you need to stand during the fireworks to see them? They are above you and nothing is happening on stage at the castle. So just before the fireworks start I notice a spot more towards the center perfect to take a video of the wishes show. I really should of moved more because there was this family standing behind me with their kid in a stroller and the kid who was probably 4 had her face buried in one of their parents phone watching what sounded like the worlds most annoying cartoon show ever. Several people asked the parents if they could turn down the volume or maybe turn it off since she wasn't really watching it and was watching the fireworks. Anyways the show starts and at first it annoys me but soon I'm able to tune it out mostly. Once it's over the wife/girlfriend starts getting all offended that people were upset with her kid and that it was all our fault. What ever, at this point the four of us our on cloud nine, the day ended on a high and we weren't tired any more. So we all go off to ride our last rides. We pack in Stitches great escape and get into the second room which has some different stuff. We do Buzz Light year and even do a round of boys verses girls, The wife and girls score added up verses my one score. needless to say I kicked their *** which was so much fun for everybody. Lots of playful yelling from us to each other which caused people to give us looks like we were fighting. Then onto Small world again, which by the way gives you a personalized goodbye message if you're wearing a magicband which was so cool to see. I told this to my friend who goes all the time but has been put on a one year ban by her husband since they went 6 times last year. When I told her about the message she was freaking out with excitement because she hadn't seen it before. come to find out it was only 3 months old. The last ride ended up being Haunted mansion which is better at night because your eyes have time to adjust and can see things better. Oh also either this day or a previous day the wife and I wore our Haunted Mansion ghost host shirts which were a huge hit with both other park goers and people working the park and the ride. One guy who worked the store stopped me and told me I was late for work and laughed. Without losing a beat I said ah but wouldn't I technically be early since I was still alive? That made him laugh and he told me that made his day. so after that ride we made our way back to the castle because everyone I talked to before going on this trip and read on Tom Brickers site said don't forget to check out the goodnight kiss. 11 o'clock comes since they said the park will be closed then and *** happens? The ****ing electrical parade starts up again. This time we have front row seats in front of the castle facing it so I get some really good shots with the castle in the background. At this point we are tired and need to get up early to get our luggage checked at the resort before they close at noon. We get back to the room and pack and shower. The kids get to bed before 1 I think but the wife and I don't get to bed before 2.

The next morning check out day is rough our flight is at 6 pm with the bus getting us at 3. So all we could do is go to Disney Springs and shop and walk around, should of done the big shopping a few days earlier so we could pack more in our bags. The reason I say that is because while in Goofy's candy store to spend the last of our snack plan we find out that we can also use unused meal plan points for candy. OMG when we found this out the wife and kids were in heaven. we didn't have too many extra meals but it was so awesome. we ended up with so much extra stuff for each of us it was great.

As a closer I just want to say that every cast member that we dealt with from the front desk to the check out people in the food court were so helpful and quick to fix any issue we had. the first day we did a quick service lunch the person ringing us up told us that we also got a dessert. When we were in the park and tried to get frozen lemonades and drinks their system was down at the cart. because it was down the lady said it was their fault so the food was free. At Coral Reef restaurant the server said appetizers were included in our plan. I also got a beer so I knew there was gonna be an extra charge. Next day I notice on the receipt that they charged for the appetizers. went down and talked to concierge they looked up what was included in our plan and noticed that appetizers were included and we were credited for the mistake. Also when my wife screwed up when setting up her MDE profile and marked me as a friend instead of family we went to get pictures with Arora and Cinderella. When they scanned her band the pictures didn't show up. After talking to one of the Concierge he looked up and discovered my wifes mistake and fixed it right away.

I'm sure there is more I can talk about but can't remember right now.

Well I finally had enough and lose it with my oldest and told her to stop being a baby and if she would stop being a lazy sloth she wouldn't feel tired all day. Of course she starts acting like a baby and crying and crap and where does she decide to have this break down? right at the circle in front of the castle right when they are doing their block party dance with the speakers blasting the music at full blast.

I was enjoying your trip report up until the point of you using the word "retarded" in describing the rope at rope drop and then you called your own daughter a "lazy sloth". Not very cool. At all.

So I edited the post to remove the one word about rope drop. I wasn't thinking when I wrote that. I still don't get why they have to treat people like cattle and hold them back on the street. Also edited the other stuff. I was just fed up with her after hearing complaints constantly the whole trip.

In the end everybody had a great time. The kids even asked when we were going back when we put them to bed when we got home. Already planning our trip for next time.

As a whole no it was an awesome trip. I mean if the wife and kids are saying they want to go back and we haven't even been home a few hours then to me that was a successful trip. I'm surprised with how much we packed in too. Next time we go we're only gonna do 5 days max probably.

Sounds like you got a lot done. I found my kids moods were much better as they got older if we brought a friend. It is not for everyone but it worked for us. Carousel of Progress is probably my favorite show at WDW! I know it gets annoying but I think it is really cool. I am planning a trip for October, November, or December of next year. I have not been in several years after going twice a years for 10 years. We used to go in July so we did not have to pull the kids out of school. Now that they are adults I do not have that problem. The summers are brutal.
