Our First Magical Poly Vacation: April 14-21 2012!

Traveling in Ohio for a wedding this weekend. Found out thus morning that DW packed the Disney Resorts Shampoo and conditioners. You know how certain scents can bring back memories? This is one of them. :thumbsup2

Scent is the biggest trigger for memories. Why do you think Disney has spent all that moola on their scent-marketing?? Smart, smart, smart!! Speaking of scent-memories, DD and I recently found a perfume that smells EXACTLY like the Poly Lobby for those that are interested......"Lancome O Oui" My SIL sent me a scarf for my upcoming birthday, and when I opened it I was instantly slapped in the face by memories of the Poly. I called her immediately and asked her why it smelt that way, and she informed me she had given it a squirt of her perfume!

Sunrise is quite nice at POFQ, I can assure. I am an early riser so I get out of the room and head down to the river and watch the day come alive.
I am SURE I saw pics once of the sunrise there. And I keep reading reviews on POFQ and it seems to be the best of the moderates, for size and transportation. It apparently doesn't have the best food options or pool, but you can share with POR, so I think that makes up for it.

Every once in a while when I need a mood lifter, I'll pull out one of my Disney shampoos and savor the scent while I shower.

I didn't love the smell of the blue shampoo, but I did buy some soaps at Basin in the GF, and I also have the H2O Aftersun Gel, so that takes me back.

Awww, Dave, I'm so glad you did the sunrise photo shoot! Isn't it magical?? And the Poly is such a photogenic resort!!! It's like you have the whole place to yourself first thing in the morning, isn't it? :cloud9:

Yes, it was very magical! That experience alone makes me want to go back.

There's a whole thread about Disney scents - it's really funny, we all have those scents that trigger some great vacation memories!! For us, it's the smell of the Dolphin lobby - white tea - soooooo pretty! And the GCH at the Poly (mix of chlorine and humid tropical vegetation). Oh, and I LOVE the smell of the H2O dry oil mosturizer - always reminds me of our trip in 2010 for Emma's graduation.

Was visiting with family in Ohio after the wedding today when brother in law asked me if I could help him with designing touring plans for their first trip to Disney next month. I said of course, and he takes his laptop out and pulls out a blank Excel spreadsheet form. That's when I knew he meant business and I was more than happy to indulge! :thumbsup2

Spent two hours with him and got his Epcot and two MK days completed. Will have to finish the AK and DHS days by email since we're driving home tomorrow am. I was worried that I would be too detail oriented with my planning style, so I let him take the lead but it turned out that he wanted as much detail as possible. So we both had fun planning the days out.

Wednesday April 18th Part II - Polyday

By the time everyone was dressed and ready, it was time for our 8:30am Ohana breakfast. You didn’t think I would actually go a day without an ADR, did you? ;) We were seated pretty much right away after check-in. We had the most cheerful and energetic server for the whole trip helping us that morning and I’m kicking myself for not remembering her name. She poured us POG juice (I guess that’s for Passion, Orange, and Guava) which hit the spot but not as much as the coffee did! The food was generic with the usual scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, home frieds, and Mickey waffles. Although, when those same food items are given to you with island names, they taste slightly better. :goodvibes

The character interactions were by far the best we had. I think it was also because all of us were feeling more relaxed and playful. First Mickey came around in his Hawaiian shirt.

DS was very much at home with him, giving him hugs and standing next to him for a picture without needing an adult hand to hold him. Pluto was hilarious. After signing DS’s autograph book (you know how Pluto and Goofy have to sign those books, waaay above their snouts so they can see), he gave the pen back, but placed the autograph book on his snout, then lowered himself to DS so that DS could fetch it.

Stitch and Lilo both came by our table twice! When they both came by the second time, DS was sitting on Grandpa’s lap so they would give a bearhug to both of them, tickling DS. It was great.

DD loved all the attention as well. She asked Mickey where Minnie was and he replied by saying she went swimming! When Lilo came by the second time, I asked her if she was going to be surfing anytime this morning, and she nodded and posed for me!

While we were waiting for our check, DS, DD, and DW were playing around with their leis and they all decided to turn the leis into flower crowns and put them on their heads. Pluto happen to be walking by our table behind DW, saw what was going, and came over to pat DW on her "crown" with his paw. Then he tried to take his lei off (wasn't going to happen without ripping it to shreads :lmao:) so that he could do the same thing.

One thing I learned from all of this is character interactions are what you make of it. I think if you make it interesting for the characters, they will definitely respond in kind. I also decided that not having an autograph book for our next trip may be a good thing – trying to get the pages open and ready with the pen just distracts you from the experience.

Now it was time for everyone to get back to the room to get ready for some time at the pool. The kids had been looking forward to this all week, especially DD. And, I had reserved a cabana! On our way back to our room, I took a little detour to swing by the two cabanas and our attendant was already there getting the towels ready. We were going to be in Mauna Loa.

I caught up with the rest of the family and we were ready to go out to the pool.

We had brought a kickboard for DD, but one of the lifeguard immediately and politely informed us that it was a no-no. We didn’t bring any floating devices for DD so we got her one of the lifevests from the Marina. Paid off the bill while I was there as well. The whole experience was relaxing. The fact that I’m using the term “relaxing” so many times just goes to show how much we loved this downtime.

The adults took turns playing with the kids in the pool. DW taught DD how to swim like a frog. DS would slowly walk towards the deeper side of the pool but whenever the water started touching his neck he would say “too deep for me” and turn back around. It wasn’t all that crowded for the morning although they did start handing out wristbands around noon. The kids did not want to try the volcano slide. I asked the fruit plate to be ready around noon.

We also called private dining and ordered items from Kona’s menu to be delivered to our cabana. We had the Kahuna Burger, Kona Club sandwich, and fish tacos. They were all very good. We were so stuffed that everyone agreed our ADR for the evening at Whispering Canyon Café was probably not a good idea as we already had two decent sized meals for the day. So I just went online on my iPad and cancelled the ADR. Once we ate, everyone went back in the pool. Around 1pm, there was a game of “duck scramble” for the kids on the zero entry side of the pool where rubber duckies were thrown in and kids were asked to go get them. DD and DS participated in had a good time.

Next up: More fun on the sandy beach!

That's awesome! :thumbsup2

Got home today but during my 7 hour drive, I came up with more touring plans for them! It's so much fun living vicariously through someone else's Disney trip. Plus, they are planning on having my 5 year nephew participate in Jedi Training!!

LOVING the cabana! We didn't do that last time, but next time for sure, it looks so inviting!!!! Gosh, I love the Poly! That's really cool how well the characters interacted with your family! I bet it makes it way more fun for the actors too, to have people "play."

I definitely think so. I would think that the characters are looking for opportunities to break out of the usual "Sign. Pose. Click." routine whenever possible.

I was reading Emma's PTR today, and you two should come up with some conversation starters for your 1900 Park Fare dinner with Cinderella's extended family. The step sisters and step mother are so much fun and if you give them the right material, they'll run with it! Maybe you could casually ask one of them if they know of any princes that are available to wed your daughter. I bet that will get a funny reaction from one of them! :lmao:

Oh my goodness, that's perfect! I'm so doing that!!! I love the stepsisters!

I've been using my Disney trip planning skills (;)) to plan a trip to San Diego next month with the kids and my parents. We only get to see them 2-3 times a year as they live overseas, so they were thrilled when I proposed we meet them there and more than happy to cover the costs! (We're very lucky)

I've also been debating whether to take a day trip to Disneyland with them while we're there. My parents are not too warm to the idea yet since they know the kids were just at Disney World and it would involve 4 hours of driving in one day for the round trip. I've been visiting Disneyland's website and each time I go on it, it makes me want to go more. It's like apples and oranges comparing the two Disney's.

I really want to visit Disneyland ... I couldnt imagine getting SO close and NOT going !! I just want to do it at least once.

I know, and that's why it's so tempting because we will be so close. I would even be happy visiting just Disneyland and missing out on California Adventure Park. I'm going to keep working on convincing my parents. No convincing will be needed for the kids! :goodvibes

Oh that would be so cool to be able to compare the two parks. I see alot of west coast people coming here and how much WDW doesn't compare, but I wonder if its just all what you are used to. Afterall....how can a bigger castle, bigger place not be better?! :thumbsup2 It would make for a great TR!

Oh, I hope you can convince your parents to make the trip to Disneyland! There's something special about the original!!!! I haven't been in ages - we used to stop on our yearly family trips from Australia where we were living at the time to either the States (to visit my father's parents) or Canada (to visit my mother's parents). It is so magical! If you can do it, I hope you do!!!!! :goodvibes

I am about halfway through your trip report, and saw your best of list oh my gosh we must have the same taste-LOL. Totally agree with your restaurant picks, resorts, characters etc. I just wanted to say my favorite resorts are the Poly and AKL -- you will love AKL. And you should have breakfast at Boma similar to Tusker so good!
