Our Dog has an allergy

Our Granddaughters dog a White West Highland Terrier who lives with us {The dog not the Granddaughter} has an allergy we found out on Monday what he is allergic to .......................

GRASS AND TREES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poor little soul I have cut the lawn really short and am in the process of removing some of our trees. Was going to take some out anyway, its a bit of a problem really as we live next to a hill covered in trees so taking some of ours out isnt really going to help but at least he wont be able to rub up against them. If we have injections for him from the vet it will cost us £500 but only £250 if we do it ourselves

DH has a friend at work who has a jack russell who has the same grass allergy and he is going to tell DH the name of some shampoo as it appears to help he also puts sudocrem on his skin which helps( I am not sure about using that although if its gentle enough for babies it should be ok). So if any one out there has and suggestions to help his allergy it would be most appreciated

I seem to remember that Natalie's dog, Jarvis, is allergic to grass too. Not sure how she treats it though

I'm sure, but don't hold me to it you can get hayfever stuff for dogs.

Freddie is only three and just started scratching late last year.
He has had steroids but the vet doesnt want to give him too many as
he could develop diabetes later on in life if he has them all the time.
Will try the shampoo and see how he goes. Apart from the scratching he his happy enough he is a lovely dog and we hate to tell him off when he is usually so good.

What a nightmare!

Can I ask if your dog has shown any other signs of the allergy other than scratching?

My 10 month old boxer has been on various different tablets & creams since October as she has some kind of allergy or infection however our vet has not yet managed to cure it with the antibiotics, etc. She has a constant inflamed ear (we have used three whole bottles of ear drops) & also scratched all the hair off the side of her face & neck (an area about 7 inches by 3) & a swollen red spotty chin. We are on the verge of paying £200 for some blood tests to see if she is allergic to something.

he is indeed, luckily its very mild and a short course of medrone sorts it out

Freddie has been chewing his paws and legs and rubbing against the trees and bushes in the garden making things worse he has a bald patch on his side and some of his skin under his legs is discoloured. We have had the tests done at the vets altogether they cost £551. Everytime he goes fot the vets it is costing anywhere between 60 to £100. He is insured but we dont know how long the insurance company will pay out. He had 3 sutures which he had to have taken out after 2 weeks. He only had one when he went back to the vets he managed to take the others out himself. He had to have anasthetic for the tests he also had his ears cleaned and has drops for them. The vet told us to bath him more often too.
I think all our dogs need a little of this :

I have two greyhounds and recently the youngest one was covered in blotches and lumps. He had been rolling in newly cut grass and having a great time.
Off he went to the vet and I was stounded to find out she prescribed......................PIRITON!!

Yes Piriton.
She said it was great for pet allergies and they tended to use it on most dogs.
Weird I thought, however it solved the problem and it cleared up within 3 days.

I am a member of a greyhound site and discussed it with some of the other owners who told me it was quite common to use it on dogs.
They are all experienced dogs owners. Most agreed that normal Piriton from the chemist at half a tablet each time was about right.

So might not do any harm to try it, it only costs a couple of pounds

I know its a pain but try washing your your dogs feet with warm water everytimes he comes in.
It might be tree pollen as well thats causing the problems,

Thanks for the info. Bailey has been chewing her paws too. I know how you feel about everythime you go to the vets it's costs so much. We are in the same boat, so far we have paid over £300 for the tablets, creams & drops & we still haven't has the blood tests yet. In one way we are lucky as our insurance has paid out all but the first £50 but they will only cover each illness for 12 months or £1500 - whichever comes first.

I wish I had found a better insurer for her when we got her as she was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia aged 5 months so if she needs an operation on her hip when she is older then it won't be covered.

Thank you for all your comments. Have been wiping his feet with pet wipes when he comes in from the garden but as he always wants to go out that could become quite expensive. He loves to just sit on the decking until he hears someone pass by then he charges across the lawn has a quick stop by the trees then is on his way.
He has recently found a hedgehog and at night he tries to chase it round the garden,he goes in amongst the bushes following it, we now have to put up mesh to keep him out and let the hedgehog in.
So I have removed a heather which he always rubs up against as I think this is why he has trouble with his ears the small flowers die and the husks that are left just fly off.
I think the only cure for Freddie might be a little spacesuit or astro turf at least I wouldnt have to keep cutting it !

we don't let Jarvis out in the garden much at all. he goes out for his walks on paths instead of grass ans when he gous out for the toilet we take him on a lead to minimise the amount of contact he has with grass.

My vet ( who i used to work for ) told me that if you tested the whole dog population around 90% of them would be allergic to grass
