Chapter 1 - The Prelude

Hello, cruise DISers!! This is my fourth trip report in as many trips (although perhaps my food report doesn't count as a *true* trip report...), and hopefully, I'm starting to get the hang of it (although I'm still as long-winded as ever - LOL). I absolutely love reliving my trips through pictures and words, so, for those of you reading, hopefully, you'll be informed and entertained by what I have to say and the pictures I will be sharing with you.

If you've read my past reports, you'll know that DH and I sorta have this arrangement worked out whereby we switch off every other year with a cruise, doing the parks in the off year. So, because we did the parks trip in September, 2008, 2009 was to be our cruise year. However, in the year and a half leading up to the cruise, I somehow finagled a parks trip in March, 2009 too. :thumbsup2 :rotfl:

This cruise was to be filled with many, many "firsts" for us. It was our first time on the Magic, our first time on a 7-night itinerary, our first (and, sadly, last) trip pulling our 5-year old DD (who hereafter will be known as "The Big") out of school, our first trip as DVC members, our first cruise where we where wholeheartedly participated in DIS activities (Fish Extenders, Secret Mickeys, meets, etc.), and our first time staying at our DVC home - Bay Lake Tower.

Given that we had this trip booked for a year and a half, we had a lot of time to research the activities and excursions that we wanted to do. We decided to do the jetskis at Castaway Cay, an ATV excursion (non-Disney) at St. Maarten, and the Butterfly Farm at St. Thomas, as well as doing Palo brunch, Palo high tea, Palo dinner, and the Tea with Alice with The Big. The Eastern itinerary also has three sea days built in, so we knew that we would also have a lot of time to generally relax aboard the ship. We also attended MNSSHP on September 25th, so my trip report will also include pictures from the party.

Since we were Castaway Club members, we booked the Palo brunch and dinner at the 90 day mark, but were unable to get the Palo high tea reserved through the online system. Being the uber-planner that I am, this failure to score a high tea reservation hit me pretty hard, but I was hopeful that we'd be able to secure a reservation once on board, and I tried not to stress too much about it in the months leading up to the cruise. We also were able to get the Disney excursions booked, and, when one of the DISers on our cruise meets thread found out about the ATV excursion at St. Maarten, we all scrambled to book the first time slot so we could have a big DIS ride. Sadly, the guy who initially found the ATV excursion got bumped from the first timeslot, but I hear that they ended up getting a fabulous ride too.

I guess that takes us through the preliminaries, right up through the week before the cruise. Since DH and I have come to expect some sort of crazy drama right before our Disney trips, my next update will tell you all about the nightmare week we experienced before our cruise.

To all who are joining me so far, thank you very much! :goodvibes

Hi Crystal! I never actually was able to introduce myself to you, but I did see you around the splash zone a few times eating lunch with your family. Definately did not want to intrude on family time and had to watch my little one in the splash zone. Glad to hear you had a magical trip and can't wait to read it from your point of view.

Hey there, friend!

Wow, you jumped right on board with this TR! Looking forward to following it, and reading more about your adventures! :goodvibes

TB was absolutely more adorable than I ever imagined she could be!! It was great spending the little amount of time we had with you!

We're still trying to settle back in and Jim is out of town already! Back to reality in a snap!:lmao:

Have a great week!

Can you say; "my name is Crystal, and I'm a Palo addict"? ;)

Yes, definitely! Our charges/tips for Palo rivaled the tips we gave our servers...but it was so well worth it!!

Awwww, I wished you would have said hello. I missed meeting so many DISers that I wanted to meet.

Hi there right back 'atcha, friend! I understand what you mean about being back to reality. At least I've had 2 days off before going back to work, though. :lmao:

Hi there! Mt family of 10 is going on the Magic in March, so I really look forward to your trip report and excursion summaries.:cool1:

OK Crystal...enough working! Start writing, I want to see what we missed:surfweb:

Sounds like everyone had a great time, except for the rain on CC...you know if I would have been there it would have sunshined all day:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Okay...Mister "I work therefore I CRUISE" - LOLOLOLOL. And, yes, of course had you been there, it would have sunshined all the livelong day! ;)

Keith, you definately do not know our Crystal yet. She relishes each and every moment she can keep her readers in suspention. And believe me, she's an expert in it. If she finishes this within the month, I'ld be surprised.

And hey, you might've been able to chance the weather at CC, but no way you would've been able to do so at St. Maarten. No Keith-power can trump the rule that it rains and rains and rains and rains oh and rains in our little neck of the world. :rotfl::rotfl2:

Some might say you got of lucky missing this cruise. All I can tell you there were a lot of people walking around the ships thinking there was this big group on there that just got out of the looney bin. Then again, you would've fit right in there. :upsidedow:hug:

I'm new to this DIS board thing so I was REALLY excited to see someone who was on the same cruise as we were. We lunched out the first rain under the Pavilion and got back to our room and watched the actual STORM from our verandah. LOVED IT! It did the exact same thing when we went on the land/sea a few years ago. We've come to expect it at CC!

Pleasure meeting you Crystal!

LOL -as long as the crazies were having fun (and were being fed)...

First of all, :welcome: to The DIS!!! It's a shame that you couldn't have found us a little bit before the cruise - - we had a fun little group. I bet watching the storm at CC was awesome on the verandah. Not to give any spoilers about my TR, but can I just tell you that we only spent about 2 hours total on our verandah during our entire trip? I told DH that for our next cruise, we're going to book an inside stateroom (for a fraction of the cost) and see how we fare. If we hate it, we can always go back to the verandah, but it's such a waste for us because we just don't use it (although we have good intentions to every time). Also, thanks for jumping on board my TR - - the more the merrier!

To all, I've been super busy at work trying to catch up and get my guys out of town for trial, so I'm sorry for the delay in posting my next installment. It will probably be this weekend, so hang in there with me guys!

waiting ever so patiently! :) On a side note, the friends that surprised us on the cruise booked in August at a cat 11, and they were bumped to a cat 5! WOW, talk about luck. You never know when you'll get some pixie dust spread your way!!! We love our verandah!!! We didn't spend "tons" of time out there, but we had our coffee and chocolate croissants every morning, and wine every night. So for me it was worth it!!!

See, she's already going for the 'a bit more suspension wont kill anybody' approach. :lmao::rotfl2:

:lmao: all in good time, sweetheart~all in good time!:lmao:

WOW - go your friends - that's awesome!! We had every intention of using the verandah, but just didn't. It's Cat. 11 for us next time, Baby! :upsidedow

Rounding the last week of our trip, we had the perfect plan in place to get everything done before we left mid-day on Friday. I job-share and typically work Wednesday through Friday, but I switched my schedule with my co-worker the week before our cruise so I could work Monday through Wednesday, have Thursday off as a free day, and then be able to pick The Big up from school at 11:00 a.m. and head to Orlando.

My to-do list to do the week before our cruise really wasn't too bad:

*Get a flu shot for The Big
*Pack
*Get our FE gifts labeled
*Finish scrapbook autograph pages for Wendy and Max
*Get a pedicure
*Wash the car
*Clean the house

The Saturday before our cruise we got The Big's flu shot (check). We also finished our autograph pages (check-check). My remaining plan was to finish everything else on Thursday, and be good to go by Friday morning.

All was well until it started raining Saturday afternoon...

I knew when I woke up for work at 5:30 a.m. on Monday morning and turned on the news and heard the weather forecasters urging people to stay home from work that it was bad. I soon found out how bad. The entire western side of Atlanta was under water, with no end to the rain in sight. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that every road within 3 miles of our house was flooded. Schools were closed, houses were under water, people were trapped, we were under a boil-water advisory, and, as the day progressed, the rain started flooding the rest of the city, closing portions of 4 of the 5 major interstates in Atlanta. To make matters worse, The Big started running a fever and coughing. Now, I've come to expect that nothing ever goes quite as planned, but a freakin' flood the week before my vacation *and* a sick child?? C'mon!

Weather-wise, Tuesday was a little better in the rest of the city, but my area was still under water - the major interstate going east into the city (I-20) was still closed both ways as were 2 of the 3 alterate non-interstate routes. Oh, yeah, and school was closed again. AND, The Big's fever was still raging. No work for me...again.

On Wednesday, I decided that I was going to brave the roads and try and make it into work. DH stayed home with our still-sick child (school was closed again due to the flooding). I-20 into Atlanta from our house was still closed, although they had opened up 2 of the 3 alternate routes. I left the house at 6:00 a.m., thinking that, at worst, I would be at work by 8:00 a.m. (I usually have a 50 minute commute). By 8:00 a.m., however, I had only traveled 10 miles of my 37 mile commute. Still, I plugged away, and made it to work at 9:45 a.m., a full 3 hours and 45 minutes after leaving home. About mid-day, I received the good news that I-20 had been opened, so I was hopeful that my commute home would be okay, and it was. I hoped that things were starting to look up, and that the drama was behind us. The Big still had a fever, but she insisted that she felt fine otherwise.

I knew, however, that my plan for being off Thursday was shot because I missed work Monday and Tuesday, but I thought that we'd be okay with getting everything done Thursday night and Friday morning (less the house cleaning - - I knew that was just not going to happen). Little did I know that the Gods were still not through with me.

At 3:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, The Big came into our room and woke us up and said that her legs hurt and she couldn't walk. Since The Big is pretty easy-going, I knew that she must have been in some serious pain to wake us up. I took her temperature (101), and, in the way that moms do, got all freaked out and called the emergency line of her pediatrician (I got really scared when I started Googling "flu shot complications"). The nurse who called back thought it best that we take her to the ER, so, at 4:30 a.m., I found myself driving my child to the ER. We were processed fairly quickly and her temperature was only 99 when the nurses took it, but the doctor asked The Big to walk around a bit, felt her legs, listened to her lungs, and proclaimed her "fine." For the record, DH thought the same thing, and said I was crazy to be taking her to the ER, but I was fully in panicked-mom-mode and there was no reasoning with me. Anyway, because her fever was down and because she assured me that she was not in pain, I dropped her off at daycare (school was closed again) and went into work, being only 2 hours late today (thankfully, I'm the employee who's always on time and never calls in sick, so my bosses were great).

Thursday passed quickly, and, at 7:00 p.m., I was headed home to begin my vacation!! My revised plan was to get a pedicure before I got home (BUT the salon was closed when I got there, so no-go on the pedi) and have DH wash the car while I attempted to give myself a pedicure (which actually went as planned, although, given that DH didn't get back until 9:00 p.m., we decided to leave the Windexing of the car windows until the morning), and start packing. We also decided that, since The Big's school was closed on Friday, that we would leave at 6:00 a.m. on Friday morning and hit Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party that evening. YAY!

As I'm sure you guys can imagine, by 10:00 p.m., DH and me were both completely exhausted. So, we decided to set the alarm clock for 5:00 a.m. on Friday and finish packing, with the hope that we'd still be on the road by 6:00 a.m. on Friday morning. AND, on a super positive note, The Big was feeling great (no leg pain, no fever, no coughing).

That's it for now. Thanks for reading this far!! :grouphug:

Up next: The Fun Begins

p.s. For those of you interested, the verdict on The Big's leg pain was either (i) dehydration leading to muscle cramps; or (ii) that the flu virus got into her leg muscle. Oh, and, despite the fact that doctors tell you that you can't get sick from the flu shot, her pediatrician said that's exactly why she got sick. Go figure. :sad2:

Wow, sorry to hear you had such a scare with TB. Puts a totally different light on why you -rightfully so anyway- were so watchfull that TB didn't dehydrate during the cruise.

Think you did the right thing taking her to the ER. Let's face it; you were about to go cruising. On the smallest off chance it might be something to worry about, you probably wouldn't want her on the ship to begin with. And heck, even DCL is on the look out for kids with a fever. It was a good prep for the cruise and thankfully turned out to be nothing more than mommy going into mommy mode.

Grin, the info on the flu shots doesn't differ per country, I guess. Just got my anual 'get your shot'-letter and it states the same 'you can not get sick from this' line in there. ;)

Yeah - they insisted when I went for my shot that it's made from "dead" virus so you can not be infected although the paperwork they supplied after I got the shot notes that mild side effects can be fever and aches!

I know - - I felt myself being overprotective, but I certainly didn't want to have her relapse and have to be (GASP) quarentined.

I know it - - I always get the same "dead" virus speech too. I guess doctors don't think we're smart enough to make an informed decision. :sad2:

Hi! What exactly did you do for the scrapbook autugraph pages? I wanted to make my Grandkids an autograph book and a journal, but I am lacking ideas. Thanks!
