Here is a picture of one of the shirts we are planning on wearing on 9/15 MNSSHP. This came out completely different then I thought it would but it actually came out better! :goodvibes

I started with a black t-shirt (Hanes, on sale at Michaels $2) I was hoping to be able to remove all the black (tie dye method) and then re-dye the white with orange. It didn't work that way, but here's what I did:

I traced, with chalk, the mickey face using a pan and a glass. I then basted, loosely, with dental floss around the outline. Then I tightened it as tight as it would go. Then I wrapped a rubber band around the dental floss area. I then did more rubberbanding on the rest of the shirts (I did 2 at once). After both shirts were banded, I used Rit-Color(dye) Remover (on the stove top method) and let them simmer for about 30 min. (Let me warn you-do this when you can open some windows-Smelly!)

I then rinsed (following package instructions). The water I poured off was dark but it didn't look like enough color came off. So, leaving on all the bands, I then soaked the shirts, overnight, in water and bleach. I put them in the washer (bands still one) and rinsed them. When they were rinsed I took them out and discovered that even though they didn't look gray after I took them out of the bleach, they were now gray. After cutting off the bands (being careful not to cut the material) I discovered that they came out like the picture. I was very happy with the result! My DD6 loves it! (that's her shirt in the picture) You can't really see it in the pix but there are portions of the black that are actually dark brown. I think the Color-remover made the shirt dark brown, and the bleach made them gray. I'm planning on using glow in the dark paint and creating a spider web type effect on them. That way when we wear them at MNSSHP the webbing will glow!

I went to Wal-mart earlier today and picked up 2, 100% cotton, black t-shirts with scoop neck (White Stag) for my mom and I. I used these same shirts last year, in white, for our tie-dyed shirts and the came out great with the added benefit of having a scoop neck which we find much more comfortable, and flattering, then the crew neck on most Ts. You might not be able to see it in the pix but I did cut the neck on my DD shirt and used fusible webbing to make it a V-neck-Being a princess: she doesn't like things tight around her neck either.

I will be happy to answer any questions if anyone wants to make a similar shirt. I will admit, that the method of doing the mickey face was something I found on these boards last year. I can't take all the credit! :thumbsup2

I plan on making the other 2 tonite (a maybe 2 for 2 girls who live down the street who want one) and I'll take some pix of the process for those we may want them. Of course, this means I'll have to get off these boards and go to Michaels to pick up some more Color Remover. :goodvibes

So if you see the girl below, plus 2 grown women (mom and grandma) walking around wearing these shirts on the 15th, please say hi! Maybe I'll hide a green mickey face on each shirt! :rotfl2:

What a great shirt! I'll also be at the 9/15 party & will say "hello" if I see you. I'll have a lime green Mickey tied to my Baggallini. : )

I will say hi as well. I will be the one guy wearing a Jack Skellington t-shirt walking around with Minnie Mouse, Tinkerbell, and Snow White, the great thing is none of the ladies are children. If you see us don't hesitate to say hello as well.

Hope to see you all there! :wave2:

Pixiedust-what color is your baggallini?-mine's purple.

gcoxua-we'll look for you and the ladies.

Will it work the same way if just done on a white t and dunked in a color? Its super cute and I have tye dye stuff all ready to go for a summer project..would be even better to do it mickey style!

I have a purple and a lime green one--not sure which one I'll be bringning yet. I'm leaning toward the purple because that'll tone down my hot pink crocs.

I'll be wearing a Halloween t-shirt with Pluto on it, and will be with a pirate and a Tink. pluto: pirate: :tinker:

:thumbsup2 we'll be there on the 15th also!!!!  dd12 will have a ribbon off her pack and i'll most likely have a mickey head hanging off my bag, we'll be in t-shirts and shorts, dd might be Cinderella......hoping to run into someone....... :Pinkbounc :woohoo:

Sorry for the delay, I haven't checked this post lately. :sad2:

Yes, actually I did some last year doing it the standard tie-dye method and they came out great!

I also did ones for my mom and I using this same method (as the black/gray) but using different shirts-(White Stag) from Walmart. They also came out great, but they are completely different than the one in my first post. The first one came out black (original color), dark brown, and gray. The new ones are black, dark gray, and golden yellow! The look like tiger stripping! I like them even better than the ones I did first. Now the dilemma-my DD6 wants one just the same! I couldn't find a higher quality 100% black T-shirt for her but I did find a brown one (Faded Glory-Walmart). I didn't use color remover this time, just bleach. It also came out great but it is completely diff. than the other 2. This one is dark brown and rosy pink. I used spray on fabric glitter (more concentrated on the mickey face) and she loves it! :cloud9: She's going to wear it to school next week. I'm still looking for the original standard black T in adult large for my mom and I but everytime I check Michaels that's the one size they are out of. :confused3

Here's the big problem now, I'm getting addicted to doing them! I can't seem to stop myself. I wonder what colors I can get from other solid colors? What if I start with dark green, dark blue, purple, red, etc. How different will they be with color remover used or not? It's becoming a sickness :confused3 .

I'm also making alot of neck coolers using the same stuff you use in planting soil.(Had some leftover for years) They are coming out great too (even if I say so myself). I've now made 5 animal prints ones, one multi-color with butterflies, and one princess one. And I want to make more, but there are only 3 of us going! I originally bought 2 at Walmart but took them back because when you wet them the material inside got slimy-felt awful on my neck! :confused3

If you want to see any pictures I can post them here or PM them to you. I just have to take the pix and burn them to a CD.

See everyone at MNSSHP! We can't wait! :Pinkbounc

I'd love to see them!

I know what you mean about crafting illness (I have one with polymer clay LOL) I want to make t shirts for DD and myself, but i wanted tank tops and i cannot for the life of me find plain white cotton tanks ANYWHERE!
I do have a pink onme that already has a bleach stain on it..now thinking ineed to try this on it and perhaps save it from becoming a dust rag!
What concentration of bleach did you use? I know if it is too strong it can eat the fabric..been there did that once :lmao:

That shirt is WAY cool! I am impressed! I'd love one in bright colors!

We'll be there 9/15 as well!!! DH2B & I will be dressed as St Louis Cardinals baseball players!!! I'm sure that I'll have some lime green mickey heads on our backpack!!! Say Hello if you see us, and we'll keep an eye out for all of you!!!

Ok, I pretty much need tye dye for dummies cause it never works for me but wouldn't it have worked if you had white shirts and dyed them black then dyed orange over that? wouldn't you still have gotten an orand and black mickey icon? I may try this but it sounds dangerous ;)
...t.

Cute shirt !! I think it came out great !!

Dizneydaz: The shirt look so good! You did a great job and thank you so much for telling how you did it. I always wonder and now I can try for myself. Enjoy your trip!

I am soo impressed with the shirt and could't begin to make one.

PLEASE ALL POST ALL ABOUT YOUR FUN ON 9-15. We will be ther on 9-29.

DizeyDaz,

Thanks for sharing-I LOVE your shirt. I tried to do this, but my results were no where near what your did. My shirt just kind of turned all grey, except in the spots with the rubber bands, which were just slightly darker grey. I guess the color remover works differently on different shirts (I used an adult black T from Michaels). I then tried to just tye dye a white shirt with orange, purple and lime green using your method of outlining the face of Mickey (that was a great tip). Anyway, I think that turned out pretty cute and will try to post a photo. Another idea is to tye dye a white shirt, and rubber band and tye dye as your normally would. Then take black dye and carefully lift up the rubber bands (do not cut them off or remove them) and squirt in the black dye just where the rubber bands were. I saw this done (although have not tried it myself) and it really looked cute, turning the white parts black. SOme black bled onto the colors, but not very much.

Thanks again for sharing!

the shirt came out incredible! wow! :thumbsup2 very nice.
have fun at the party! :cool1:
