Our 5/4 Magic cruise was, well, um, OK, I guess...

We're back and unpacked from our 5/4 Magic cruise. It was DH, DD (2 1/2), DS (9mo) and I. Putting aside DS getting sick on the cruise, I have to admit we were disappointed. It wasn't the vacation of our dreams and we do not think it was worth the $$. I've cruised Carnival and DH and I have been on RCCL. We had such lousy service on the Magic compared to the other cruise lines that I can not recommend DCL.

What we liked:
-Our stateroom. It was HUGE by cruise standards. LOVED the Verandah. Liked that DD wasn't in a pulldown berth and that we could pull the divider to get "away" from the kids.
-The Entertainment. Shows were good, although Morty the Magician was the weakest. Lots of fun family activities like dueling pianos and dancing at Studio Sea. Would have loved to have seen more on deck parties in the early evenings.
-The character interaction. We have totally been spoiled for our next visit to WDW. Lines were short for photos and we saw all the characters.
-Family time in Flounders Reef and Oceaneers Club. A must if traveling with an infant. He needed the time to play and crawl around other than in our room or on deck 4.
-Freshwater Pools. Yes, they were crowded, but still manageable. DH and I joked that we were on the "caring parents who discipline their children" cruise because children being unruly wasn't a problem.
-Castaway Cay. Beautiful. A bit crowded, but still a nice place to spend the day. Would have liked to have had more time there.
-Renting a car from Avis. Went very smoothly.
-Eating the buffet lunch in the restaraunt. Much calmer than Topsiders. Wish we would have done this from the start of the week.

What we did not like
-The hour and a half wait to get on the boat. It was loud, long and most kids were cranky. Didn't help that when we finally got in our room and laid them down for a nap they kept making announcements over the PA in our room.
-Getting off the boat in Castaway Cay. Absolutely ridiculous. Took forever. People were rude and pushing. We had to show ID to get on in St. Thomas. Why did we have to show it to get off on their private island?
-The food. I thought we'd set realistic expectations, but even then it didn't live up to them.
-The lack of a casual dining alternative to main seating that wasn't junk food. The junk food wasn't the greatest and getting a sandwhich from room service is not an acceptable alternative. Topsiders should have been open during main seating.
-Topsiders for lunch. It was loud and we felt that the servers were trying to rush us out of there by trying to remove our trays of food before we'd finished. Once, DH and DD put their tray of uneaten food down and went back for drinks. When they got back their food had been removed/thrown away. They had to wait in line again.

We also weren't impressed with the 3-4yr program in the OC. DD was allowed to participate with a parent, so we got a unique perspective. The counselers had a program they were going to do. And they would stick with it whether the kids were participating or not. They never encouraged the shyer kids to participate. One child in particular was crying for a long time. Either his parents were never paged or they never answered their page.

But the thing we disliked more than anything - and the reason we will never recommend DCL - was the service. Our stateroom hostess never smiled. She was really upset that DS was sick and couldn't believe that we were staying on the boat with him til the cruise ended. He threw up on the comforter and we never got it back. She threw away things that weren't in the trash cans (like our empty water bottles that we had intended to refill). On a slightly humorous note - we still can't figure out what 2 of the 4 towel animals she made for us were. DD says the one was an elephant, but we think it was either a dog or a bear.

Our server and assistant server were nicer. But not that attentive. We often had to wait or get a high chair for DS, even though he needed it every night. We couldn't get our water glasses refilled some nights. On the Tropical night, it was a full hour before we had food in front of us. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here.

The other aspect of service that was completely disappointing was that the CMs in general did not live up to WDW standards. One example (although I could give many): When getting off the boat in Castaway Cay, I asked where the beach strollers were. The guy told me they didn't have any, but they had carts onboard at Guest Services. When we got off the tram, we found a mini parking lot full of strollers.

So to sum it up: Fun family activies, OK food, poor service. Sorry this got so long.

I wish I knew what to say, but I'm sorry that you had these problems. Some of the towel animals you need to use your imagination. Your son was probably correct about the dog. One we had, I believe was a frog... I think. I still love them, though and look forward to them every night. Some people don't get towel animals. I don't believe it's a standard thing, just something extra the stateroom host does to please you.

dijid, I really appreciate the honest appraisal (Sorry about the sick child and proud of you for sticking with your budget!:) ). I'm concerned about the report on the Oceaneer's Club--I would be LIVID if Buzz cried for ages and I never heard about it (and this is a very real concern for us). Not that I'm going to cancel based on one report, but it's good to know where the cruise's weak links will be!

So sorry to hear of your troubles on this cruise. Every once in a while, you'll get a bad server or CM, etc. Sounds like you had the unfortunate luck of getting all of them on the same cruise!

Now, I don't say this to 'rub it in', but we had the exact opposite on our cruise - great servers, amazingly attentive service, outstanding food, and all the CM's seemed eager to please.
I don't blame you for never recommending DCL based on your experiences, but trust me, they're not always like that!

I hope your next family vacation makes up for everything, wherever you choose to go!

'Beano'

Thanks so much for your post! We were fellow cruisers - 3 generations, 10 people in all, and our appraisal was pretty much the same. None of us wanted to say it, but the cruise was overall a mediocre vacation experience.

Clearly the service was not up to Disney's typical standards - - our time at WDW before and after the cruise showed us the stark contrast in service.

Food was barely "ok". Only contrast was Palo's for dinner. We had great service (zita was our wait staff) and fabulous food. Tea at Palo's was marginal - - the food was mediocre and so was the service.

Kids' clubs were ok. Beware in 5-7 age group - - if your kid doesn't love computer games they will find little to do when they are shuffled over to the lab. Our 3 year liked the club and our 6 year old liked some of it.

We enjoyed Magen's Bay beach in St. Thomas and thoroughly enjoyed Castaway Cay. My kids adored the nearly empty pool on St. Martin's Day.

We had read the boards for months and had prepared well - - thanks to fellow DISers. We all just sensed something was missing. As a family we enjoyed ourselves, but that was based on us enjoying each others company, and less on what DCL had to offer.

PS Not enough people said: you WILL FEEL THE SHIP. It didn't make anyone ill in our group (thanks to wristbands and bonine for some), but there is a sense of motion and rocking. Didn't bother me, but didn't anticipate it.

dijid...I was on the same cruise. Please check out my trip report on the Disney Cruise Trip Report Page.

I agree about the food. Not great and not a good selection. We liked a lot of the same things. Our dining servers were good but not outstanding. Never had a high chair and never had our regular drinks waiting. I noticed on the last night most waiters were hugging and holding the children. I was envious because we did not feel that connection with our waiters. They were effective though - just not overly friendly.

Check out the report. Sorry it wasn't what you expected.

I wonder if the CMs were for some reason anxious about the changes on the 5/11 cruise? This will be #4 for us

cruise 1- we had an absolutely GREAT stateroom host- I did not realize it until cruise #2! Our servers were nothing to remember but the food was really good. My DD was a shy 6 year old and the counselors were great with her. They really made the trip great for her and I had never before felt as relaxed with her somewhere other than with me as I did on that trip!

cruise 2- had a not-so good stateroom host- the cart was always parked outside the room and I had to get towels off of it nightly because when we would come to dress for dinner our room had not been cleaned and replenished wiht fresh towels! Our servers on the other hand we GREAT! My DD went up to the lab this time and really missed the club and the interaction with the counselors that she had on cruise 1.

cruise 3- a decent hostess- 1st time we ever had towel animals but nothing much other than that- not as good as # 1 and not as bad as # 2. Our servers really lacked. In fact- our asst. server from the year before remembered us and was great. Our server or asst never remembered what we wanted to drink or offered any suggestions as to what to order. My DD still did not enjoy the lab but thank goodness had my nephew and a couple of friends on this cruise to keep her happy!

cruise 4- I am expecting everything to be WONDERUL. We are on the May 25 Western and I know that a few disappointments will not ruin the cruise but we will anly hope for the best. We have a veranda this cruise- my family is healthy amd together- we are not at work, doing laundry, or paying bills. How can this be anything but GREAT!

Sorry to hear you had a disappointing cruise-who were your servers and stateroom hosts. Did you give them a poor rating? Hope our cruise doesn't turn out that way. Beth

Sorry to hear your cruise was not enjoyable.
On the contrary, dh and I cruised with DCL 3 times last year and have no desire to go elsewhere. It has always been fabulous.
We didn't have high expectations, so I think that helps. We expected it to be traditional Disney service and it exceeded that.
JMHO.

What bothers me about this is that it's totally avoidable. If DCL allowed passengers to make their Palo and Spa ressies in advance like they now allow advance shore excursion ressies, the Ressies Scramble would not exist. And there'd be no reason to show up hours early so you can be one of the first on the boat. Allow us to make all these ressies in advance. The Ressies Scramble is an entirely too stressful way to start the cruise... especially if you're a newbie and don't know what you're doing or don't know about it until it's too late.

Yep. That's a problem too. Not sure how they could improve on this.

Sorry to hear that your experience wasn't that great. I was also on that cruise but I guess I was lucky with the service.....our assistant server was so-so but I think he was new. I still liked him though. We had just the opposite with the booster seat. there was always one at our table, but dd didn't want it (a big girl thing!). Our water was always full and dh always got his before dinner martini promptly (once it was at the table when we got there!)

My dd didn't really like the 3-4 club. she went three times but by the time we picked her up, she was quite sad and being held by a CM. We didn't force her to go, she really wanted to because her sister was doing and making all kinds of neat things in the 5-7 club. Funny about the computer comment because my dd said she never once played the computer in the lab. Mind you, we only put her in once per day for a main event (she really wanted that prize!). On the last day she asked to go twice because she wanted to spend some more time with a friend that she made there.

About the 3-4 club, dd said there was 'too many kids'....and there were a few who just stood there and cried (broke my heart!). We never did get paged...but I don't think dd was hysterical or anything...I don't know, maybe she was...her name was Adele..did you happend to see her there??

We really enjoyed our trip. This was our second and I'm sure we'll be back for a third in the future.

Helen.

Helen - please don't worry. I don't remember Adele being there - which means either she wasn't there or she had blended in as just one of the kids there (which is a good thing.) No one was actually sobbing or hysterical. It was more like scared and somewhat upset. I probably saw the same kids that your DD was referring to that just stood there and cried. On paper, the large child to CM ratio didn't seem bad, but once I saw it, it did seem like it was too many children for such a young age. The 5-7 group seemed better. My guess is these children are more likely to be used to large classroom settings.

BuzznBelle's Mom - You could always go with Buzz for the first activity to see how it is. Or, it might be possible to stand in the entrance to the Club and peek at what's going on without Buzz seeing you. He'll probably be fine in this age group.

I agree with most of your post...lucky for us our stateroom host was great...always saw me coming with the stoller or with my toddler in general and jumped to open the door...the food, so /so nothing very special, our servers were fair to poor...never asked us if we wanted coffee, never had a booster seat waiting for DD. They seemed very disinterested in general.. we had Louis (from India) and Pastama.
Because DD is only 2 I ended up eating in the stateroom a few times...our table companions were very nice..they had been on 10 cruises and this was their first disney cruise...they really didn't like the food or service (and they had a lot to compare it to) this was just our first cruise.
MOTION SICKNESS: I'm very prone and had a tough time until we hit St. Maartin, then I was pretty well...DH and DD were uneffected.

Just a question about this... I thought that Topsiders WAS open for casual dining during dinner seating. Is it no longer an option? I could've sworn that I read somewhere that you choose your own appetizer from the buffet and then the same menu as in the regular dining rooms are served in Topsiders, only no dress code etc.

Thanks, dijid, I was planning on checking on both kids periodically, and Buzz definitely does better if you ease him into situations, acting like you have nothing better to do and not dying to go up to a spa reservation! I'm hoping he'll be helped by having Belle and also his cousin in the same age group, plus he loves computers and pirates. He's just one of those kids, if he decides he's not going to have a good time, nothing on heaven or earth will convince him otherwise!:) Even though I'm with him 24/7, and could use an occasional break, I would just be SO PO'd if he were crying and they didn't call me because they didn't want to bother me. I'm his mother, it's not a bother!

Sorry you were disappointed with your cruise. I cruised in January with my best friend and we had a great time.... our room steward was good (nothing special- but he was friendly enough)...... they work very long hours with little time off.....we took that into consideration. Our servers were THE BEST! We had Wit and Martin..... I still miss them...:(

We didn't wait a long time to get either on the ship or off at Castaway Cay..... just lucky I guess.

Just a note about the crying child in the club...... maybe the parents were called- some people think their kids need to "cry it out" you just never know.

I got some brochures from other cruise lines yesterday..... I might want to try some others out in the future!

Lisa, you are correct. Topsiders is open during main seating. We skipped late seating one night and went to Topsiders. You go up and pick your appetizers and then sit down and order your meal off a menu and then you go back up and get your own dessert.
I thought the Luncheon buffet's were very good with alot of choices but the dinner option in Topsider's was just ok. If the dinner option in Topsiders was like the luncheon buffet I would have been much happier.
we just came back from the May 4th cruise on the Magic and we loved it. Met alot of nice people. The service we had was very acceptable in the dining room and for our room. Our servers Ritesh (India) and Tiago (Brazil) were excellent with our kids and us. I may try to do a brief trip report soon if I can find the time.
Bottom line is you will have an awsome time. Wish we could be going again soon.
Brian

According to the Navigator's, Topsiders doesn't open til 7pm for dinner. Main seating starts at 6, and so it was easier to get our food from our rotation restaraunt. Since DS was sick, we sometimes left early and then would run through Topsiders for dessert to bring back to the room. If Topsiders was open earlier (and maybe it opened early, but we didn't know it) we would have definitely eaten there.

Hi all,
We just returned Saturday from the May 4th Eastern Carribean Magic cruise. We truly loved it. I suppose our glass was always half full....not half empty;) . I'm so sorry you didn't enjoy your vacation...I just wanted to add this so that people going wouldn't think they were doomed for a bad vacation.

Our stateroom host was Daniel and he was SO VERY sweet. He has a wife and two children in his country that he is working for. He made towel animals every single night. One night we didn't know what it was but ...."who cares", lol. It was great! These people work seven days a week for six months at a time. It doens't hurt to go out of our way to be nice to them once in a while...lol. They have feelings too.

Besides, I was very impressed at how everyone seemed to go out of their way to help us. Everywhere we turned someone was asking if we needed anything. Our dinner server was Gabriella and assisting her was Somchai, they were AMAZING! My five year old is in love with "Gabby" and she hugged and kissed on them all week. She had "extra" seafood for my hubby all week. She knew he loved it so she had him extra shrimp and lobster whenever available. We all got into drinking the non-alcholic Shirley Temples every night and Somchai apparently noticed my children wanted the cherries dug out to eat....so he always brought a big bowl of cherries to our table with our drinks.

Just so all of you know...we have been on many vacations to many different places and we LOVED the MAGIC! Hope you do too. I think it is what you make of it. :)

OHHHH, the children's programming was awesome. My five year old son.....LOVED LOVED LOVED it. He didn't want to come out and he is usually stuck to our sides! He misses Vivian from Brazil (one of the counselors)....they were very professional, very cautious and took excellent care of my son. He pages us twice ...only because he didn't wish to see Captain Hook who was going to come by. He later met him and like him. LOL! They page you promptly when your child needs you. I'd go back tomorrow if I had the chance. I'll get a trip report with photos together soon.

Debbie

that your cruise wasn't totally wonderful! One thing I do know about Disney, is that they usually like to hear if something (ESPECIALLY the service, as that is what they are famous for) isn't up to par. One trip to WDW, we met up with a rather rude "Goofy" , in my survey and after the trip I wrote the date, time and place where Goofy was rude. We got a very nice letter back from WDW and a nice picture card of Goofy with an apology. I know it won't help you, but if you stateroom hostess was that bad, I hope you let Disney know AND that you didn't tip her. No way to let a person know how BAD they are better than NO tip! I hope we have better luck on our Cruise, and I do hope your DS is much better, now.
