After a very magical 8 night stay at Disney's Polynesian resort we continued our vacation with a 4 night stay at HRH. I realize that Universal had a lot to live up to especially after being upgraded at the Polynesian from a garden view room to concierge so I will try to be fair but please don't be mad this is not a glowing report.

We are not seasoned travelers so the first thing DH was not thrilled with was that one, we had to pay to park and two, we had to unload EVERYTHING at the main door unlike at the Polynesian where you can park and they bring a cart to bring you to your room. If you fly this would not be a problem but traveling in a car with 3 kids when you have just repacked after 8 nights, things are a little confusing. I was also unsure as to who exactly to tip. First, there was the guy who tried to help unload the car and then there was the guy who brought everything to your room. I felt a little put off to have to tip them both when I felt they each did half a job.

Upon check in the only thing I had requested was a view of the theme parks. I was politely told that the only rooms which had a view of the theme parks were smoking rooms. Since DD has asthma this was not an option. Check in was easy but I did not feel like anyone cared to impress me this being our first visit. Our room was on the 5th floor. We had a view of the Woodstock Lawn and the water taxi. It was nice but DS (12) and DD (11) are both roller coaster fanatics and it would have made their trip to look out and see the parks.

The room did not impress me at all. It was much smaller than the one at the Polynesian and I was sorry I did not reserve a deluxe room for the 5 of us. It was rather stark, in need of a paint job and new carpeting and I felt the TV and dresser were too small. We also had to hunt around to plug in the alarm clock and the toilet was clogged the 1st night. Okay, we are really only here to sleep but this is supposed to be a high end hotel. Oh, and there is no refrigerator except the mini bar which we would be charged for if we removed any items. The beds were very comfortable.

The grounds were nice and the walk to the parks was very close and enjoyable. This hotel is in the best location of the three. The pool was severely overcrowded and I felt there were not enough lifeguards on duty. I know they encourage pool hopping but I don't feel my kids should have to stand in a 25 minute line to use the slide or I should have to wait until there is room in the hot tub when I am a guest at this hotel. The kids liked the slide but they liked the pool and slide at the Polynesian better. One night we decided to check out Portofino Bay since this is where we originally had resservations. The pool was just about empty and the hotel much quieter. They kids and I agreed that we would stay there next time. I really didn't feel we fit in at the HRH even though everyone in our family are avid music lovers.

One very pleasant surprise was The Kitchen. With the reviews being so-so I was a little uneasy but it was close and convenient. We had the breakfast buffet there twice and both times it was very good. Robert, the chef, was very friendly and the service was excellent. We also decided to eat at The Kitchen one night around 9:00 PM when we just didn't know where else to go. Again, we were pleasantly surpised. There was a nice buffet for the kids, I had a chicken pot pie and I don't remember what DH had but we felt the food was good, the service excellent and the price reasonable.

Pastamore was perhaps the best place we ate at Universal. We enjoyed this meal very much and would go back. We also ate at NBA City since the entire family is into basketball big time. The food was okay (I had to send my steak back to be put on the grill a little longer) but nothing to write home about.

In the parks, we did the character breakfast in Confisco's Grill. Thing 1 and Thing 2 were very entertaining and Spiderman was great with the kids. The food was a typical buffet nothing outstanding but we enjoyed the characters. We also ate at the Enchanted Oak (?) where we took cover from a rain storm. The menu was great in that it varied from the usual fast food choices. Next time I would like to try Mythos (?).

FOTL is SUPER!!!! This would be my number one reason to stay on site again. We enjoyed the parks but I do not have a burning desire to return right away. It felt more "theme parky" than at Disney but they do have more thrill rides. We thoroughly enjoyed most of the shows. Next time I would follow my instincts and do Universal first and Disney last. I guess I just feel more away from it all at Disney. One thing about visiting Universal after Disney was that I was certainly ready to go home by the 4th day.

Our departure was where the real problems began. We had parked our car in the hotel parking lot for the 4 nights of our stay. When DH came back from bringing a few things to the car he said to me, "Don't get upset if you see a few ants in the car." There was an ant hill near where the car was parked. We packed up and had the bell service take our bags down and we loaded the car. Now again, we were driving back to NJ and you don't feel like you can take much time organizing your car while you are taking up space in front of the hotel so we pulled back down to the parking lot to get organized for the long trip ahead. It started with DD saying there are ants in the car. The kids then started to see more and more of them. I started to see them in the front where I was sitting and opened the car door to help the kids. When I opened the door the entire interior of the door was covered with ants! Hundreds and hundreds of the tiny creatures started to crawl out into the front of the car and more were appearing in the back of the van. We now realized that there was no way we could drive to NJ like this and I walked all the way up the drive and back into the hotel. At the front desk they clearly did not know what to say to me. Finally, they said they had sent for someone to come and help.

About twenty minutes later Chris Garcia, the Manager on Duty, arrived and by this time DH had brought the car back to the entrance of the hotel. Mr. Garcia was very nice and took the car to maintenance to have it vaccummed out. We waited in the lobby until he returned with our car. He was very apologetic and gave me his card in case the car needed further detailing. This was not to be the end of this saga. We drove home and every time we stopped and then returned to the car they were everywhere. By the time we got home we had to make sure EVERYTHING was shaken out so that we didn't bring them into the house. All the food and snacks we had taken on our trip had to be thrown out because the ants were in them. THREE WEEKS later though they have decrease in number, I am still killing ants and my rugs are now littered with them. To top things off now the passanger's side window does not work and we think the infestation might have played a part in the problems with the electrical system we are experiencing. Still waiting on word from our mechanic.

I know this has to be an isolated problem but no guest should go on vacation and have to deal with a problem of this nature. How pleasant do you think our ride was with 3 kids killing bugs for 1200 miles?! Let alone how I felt that my kids were being put into this situation. Imagine bugs crawling on you and your kids.

Okay enough about the ants. I have put my comments into a survey that was sent by Loews. I am hoping to hear at the very least an apology for our trouble. Other than that as I said I was not overly impressed and the ending just made me want to leave all the more. We may try Portofino Bay in the future if the kids really want to return to Universal but probably only for 2 or 3 nights at most. We are not planning on returning to FL anytime in the next couple of years. I need to return to work now that my youngest is almost through elementary school and the house is in need of some TLC. It is sad that our trip ended on such a sour note but hopefully HRH will refurbish their rooms and hire an exterminator that gets the job done so no one else will have this nightmare to deal with. :sad2:

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experiences. I sympathize with you about driving back to NJ with all those ants! It was very nice, however, that the manager did his best to rememdy the sitatuation. That could have happened anywhere really, not just Universal.

We only stayed at Universal once, which was this past summer. We really enjoyed our visit. We did stay at Portofino Bay and found it, even in August, to be rather quiet. Loved the Villa Pool where, at times, we had the pool to ourselves. If you're looking for a more peaceful enviornment, I would suggest that hotel.

As for feeling "away from it all", I definitely experienced that at Universal. In fact, it surprises me with how little property they have there and how close the outside roads are that they are able to achieve this feeling of seclusion. I admit that I do like a lot of the Disney parks and attractions somewhat better, just my taste, but the overall Universal experience, in my opinoin, was wonderful. Already booked our room at PBH for next summer. I feel it is more laid back than Disney, a bit more relaxing. I hope you give it another try in the future and have better luck! :sunny:

Please don't misunderstand my post. We did enjoy Universal but people are right in that you really shouldn't compare it to Disney. It is it's own entity with good and bad just as there are things in Disney we are not crazy about. When I said that I just didn't feel like I was "away from it all" as in Disney, I should have said that that was just a personal opinion based on how we felt about the HRH. I do think we, as a family, would have enjoyed Portofino Bay alot more but this was our first trip and for us a learning experience (maybe I am just getting old :goodvibes ).

As far as the ant problem, yes it could have happened anywhere but we were paying for our car to stay on hotel property not parked on the street or at some dingy motel. With that comes a certain expectation that the area is clean and secure and your vehicle will be cared for because you are a paying guest. We have traveled to Florida and other locations many times and we have never experienced a problem like this. Florida is a very buggy state and as such pest control should be a top concern of any business. This was either neglected or a 1st time incident. In either case, it just should not have happened. I was just grateful they were not bigger bugs or DH would have never gotten me back in the car. :scared1:

You're right about the parking. I suppose if you are paying to park in the hotel's lot, you should expect more. We never drive - always use Tiffany Towncar to get us from the airport, so we haven't experienced any of the parking and loading/unloading problems you did. And I don't know much about HRH since we didn't stay there. I do know that it is probably the most popular of the 3 hotels. PBH was very nice and not crowded at all. Even the main beach pool, which was the attraction for the younger kids, was not that croweded during our stay.

I guess we just got lucky on our trip, because I can't say much in the way of negative comments about it. Now, I just hope we continue our good luck on our next trip!

Just a tip for you that I picked up on these boards. If you ever have to park anywhere in Florida again leave Bounce dryer sheets in the car - it keeps the ants away. This was a tip I read on the Dis Cruise Line board - apparently ants have been known to invade cars while in the Disney cruise line parking lot. There is a fee to park here also - actually $12.00 per - day but unfortunately these ant hills are a problem all over Florida and sometimes it just can't be helped. Try the Bounce though - it worked for us and definately try never to leave even a crumb in your car - again - difficult to do when you're driving such a long distance - we drive down from NJ too!

Great TR, maybe it will help others in the future.

If you ever come back, you will like the PBH much more. The rooms are bigger, and the bathroom is huge. Best thing of all, the parking is in a garage, made of concrete. No ants there, it's covered, and there's plenty of spaces. So now we'll tell people to park at the PBH, and have the staff drive people over to the HRH in a golf cart or shuttle bus. That's the answer if you're not going to move your van once you check in. The HRH parking lot is always full, while the PBH garage is practically empty.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience at the HRH. Insects seem to be a real problem in Orlando at the moment.

We spoke to a family in the HRH pool last week who were also from NJ. They were supposed to be over at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, but after checking in they checked right back out and got themselves back to the HRH after having a love bug infestation in their room at the AKL. When they enquired about this, they were told Disney unfortunately suffers from the swarms of love bugs because it was built on cheap swamp land. They ended up extending their stay at the HRH three times because they loved the it that much!

We went over to MGM last week to do a Fantasmic Dinner package and the place was infested with the things. On entering the park we rented a stroller and the first thing the CM did was bring a broom out to sweep the bugs from it. When we got back to Universal and the HRH pool we didn't have that problem.

Just wondering what weekend you were there? Was it the 5th Anniversary weekend, when the Go Go's where there and they had battle of the bands poolside? Or was it last weekend, because we were there for both weekends and at the pool everyday. We used the both hot tubs and the slide and didn't experience any lines. The Hot tub down nearer to the hotel does get a little congested, but the one at the back, by the volleyball pool was empty for most of the weekend.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience...I like to read them all, good or bad. :)

From your report, it definitely sounds like the HRH rooms are being renovated for a reason. They should all be nice & pretty again soon. :) The room I stayed in was really nice, but that was several years ago.

While me and my bf really liked HRH, we didn't really feel like we fit in either. Which is strange considering we're 20-somethings (well, he was at the time, he's 31 now) AND he's a studio musician and used to be a singer for a heavy band. Anyway, it was a very nice hotel, just not our favorite. Our favorite is RPR. It's closest to IOA which is our favorite park of the two. Plus, it's closest to Margaritaville and the theming of the hotel is more "us". :teeth:

We like the Enchanted Oak and Pastamore as well.

I'm sorry to hear about the problem with the ants. Yikes! That was really nice of the manager to try and remedy the situation. I have a rather irrational fear of insects, so I can definitely sympathize with this problem. My bf always reminds me that we live in a world shared with other living things that occassionally try to share our space with us. The thought just creeps me out. :crazy2:

Thanks again for sharing your experience! I hope your next visit will be much better! :goodvibes

Funny you should mention the ant story. We had exactly the same problem, but exactly reversed.

We had our rental car parked at the Poly for a 10 day stay. When we left, there were ants in it . Luckily it was a rental car and we just gave it back to Hertz :rolleyes1

The worst we have ever experienced was when we were parked at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii. On our way home, a gecko crawled out of the vents on the dashboard and ran over to me. My husband is still laughing that I spent the entire trip back to Waikiki curled up in a little ball on the seat. For a cute little lizard.

Sorry you had to deal with Nature. But I don't think that is really the hotel's fault. As for paying for parking, what was your room cost at the Poly compared to your room cost at the HRH? Believe me, you were paying for parking at the Poly - they just don't itemize it out.

Our last few stays have been at the Portofino. Give it another try. I think you might really like it. It is a very quiet hotel and the pool is usually not very crowded. And my kids report that they like the slide every bit as much as the slide at the Poly.

I highly recommend staying at the PBH next Time. We had been debating HRH or PBH. Our friends had stayed at HRH and very much regretted not staying at the Portofino. They had a very similar experience to yours. That made us choose PBH and boy were we glad.
The hotel is simply wonderful. As my kids kept saying, "everyone is soooo nice here." They treated us like gold. The rooms (we had a deluxe bayview) were large and beautifully decorated. The pools were never crowded and there was never a line for the slide which was tons of fun. There were many hot tubs -two at the beach pool and two at the villa pool. The whole atmosphere was relaxed. You truly felt like you were in Italy-it's amazing how they were able to give yyou the true feel of Portofino. We will be back!!!! :thumbsup2
We did stop by at the HRH out of curiosity on our way to Universal. Although those who were there seemed to be having lots of fun, it was not for us-too loud, everyone smoking everywhere, an impersonal feel to it.
By the way, our favorite place to eat is also Pastamore-Love it!!!! :cheer2:

my family and i also have stayed at royal pacific. while the hotel was great, parking lot had a lot to be desired.i feel if you are paying for parking it sould all be valet. the walk reminded you of a lower class hotel than a four star resort. plus i remember there being a problem with bees in the parking area.

Having been built on "cheap swamp land" has nothing whatsoever to do with love bugs! Love bugs migrate through Florida twice a year, are totally harmless except for being splatted all over your car. They need to be removed or they can damage the paint. There should be no love bugs inside unless they have left doors open.
As far as ants in the car, I would not be happy at all to park my car in ANY lot and come back and it be swarming with ants. I have lived in Florida my whole life and never had an ant infested car or house.
Florida does have its share of insects, but with a little care, you will not have a bug problem.
I am a HUGE Disney fan (going about 4 times a year) and go to Universal about every 2 years with my family. I am not too happy about paying for parking at HRH. I guess this is just part of it but I don't like it!
We love the roller coasters at Universal though.

I love the fact that Universal keeps the parking charge seperate. I usually don't have a car and I appreciate not having the parking charge automatically included in my room charge like at Disney.

Disney doesn't charge to park at the hotels! You pay to park at the parks, but if you stay onsite, no driving is required...

I was also unsure as to who exactly to tip. First, there was the guy who tried to help unload the car and then there was the guy who brought everything to your room. I felt a little put off to have to tip them both when I felt they each did half a job.

This happens at Disney, as well. The only time I have had our valet take our bags directly to the room at Disney was when we were staying concierge because there was no need to go to the front desk.

Sure they do. It is just already included in your room fee.

I don't think so. I always stay using a florida resident rate or annual passholder rate. We have stayed at all the resorts and never had a parking fee included. We have stayed at Animal Kingdom for $109 +tax per night, $49 at All Stars, $89 for Port Orleans, there are no parking fees added.
At the 3 onsite hotels, I am paying premium price then have parking fees added in. This stinks but I do it for FOTL and they know people will pay extra. We are going to HRH in Oct and paying $886 for 3 nights for a standard room and then $12 per day for parking.
We would probably go to Universal more than we do if it wasn't for the huge cost of onsite lodging. I go to WDW 4 times a year( staying at values usually but always at a deluxe 1 of the visits) for the cost of 1 visit to Universal.

Sorry if that seemed like I was bashing Disney. We enjoy going to both Universal & Disney (parks). Unfortunately on our last trip the edge was slightly taken off Disney by the swarms of lovebugs that were there.

Having been to Florida a total of fourteen times and because we nearly always go in September, I have been aware of the lovebug problem for many years now. I understand that lovebugs are statewide, but from our experience we have always found it to be much worse over at Disney than Universal and this was confirmed on our last trip that we arrived back from last week.

Our typical days were spent around the pool of the HRH, then visiting one of the Disney parks late afternoon. Sure, we saw the occasional lovebug over at the HRH or the Universal parks, but over at Disney they were in swarms and they CM's were constantly apologising about the problem (not that it was their fault). They were literally turning the walls over at the parks black because of the huge amount of bugs on them. YEW!

Lovebugs are more attracted to woodland and Disney being built on cheap swamp and woodland may be the reason for these swarms.

I think what people are trying to say is Loews makes you aware of your parking charge. Disney doesn't as it is incorporated in the price of the room rate.

Sure, you will get cheap room rates at other Disney resorts, but they won't be on par with with the three on-site deluxes at Universal.

We have just arrived back from the HRH and payed less than $884 for 3 nights and that was in a kids suite. Before we went there was an end of summer promotion for $159.00 a night. So,the deals are out there.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, but I definetely would not recommend The Portifino ,I invested alot of money to stay there and I actually had alot of ants in my room. The management I talked to after my trip seem to think since it was Florida you should expect to see bugs.(sorry not at their rates) they did give me a great deal to stay in a really nice room my next visit(no ants) but I would definetely not stay there again. I have stayed at RPR a couple of times and it was great. No ant issues at all.
I hope you have a better experience next time. :)
