Hi Everybody –

Sorry to take so long to post after we got back from our WDW / FW trip!

Unfortunately, it was one of those “ok, we’re going to have to make some lemonade out of these lemons” kinds of trips, but it was still good. Rather than bore you with all the details, I figured I’d just share some highlights, since so many of you were helpful in educating me along the way while I was putting this trip together, for which I am soooo grateful.

So, here’s the high/low-lights:

We wanted to camp in FW with my inlaws from Ohio. She’s 70 and he’s 81, and they hadn’t used their RV (a little Class B) in two years. Unfortunately, it overheated in an 8 hour traffic jam in West Virginia, causing part of a fan to melt. To fix that in Georgia, the repair guy swapped a fan from their air conditioner into the engine, so they could keep going. They arrived at FW on time, but were really, really sweaty and it didn’t seem to affect their health. Whew!

Good news: they got their 4-year-old RV repaired free, under warranty! :thumbsup2 Bad news, my dh spent a huge amount of time on this over several days, which signficantly cut into our WDW trip plans. :sad1:

More bad news: my MIL bashed her knee on the edge of a parking tram at Animal Kingdom on our second day, and by about an hour later, could no longer walk any distances. Just taking a few steps was incredibly painful for her. So that was the end of going to the parks with them. Apparently she ripped something in her knee, and the doctor is hoping it will heal on its own and avoid surgery. It wasted almost all of their expensive WDW park tickets and my 81-yo FIL had to drive the whole way home, 1100 miles. Bummer.

Really bad news, fortunately recovered by the reservations gods at FW: I figured out three days before we left that the AAA agent had messed up my FW reservation! My original room-only reservation was correct, but apparently when she added my park tickets, she switched me from a Preferred site to a Full hookup site, ironically, with a request for an adjoining campsite to my IL’s, who were still booked in a Preferred site. (Hmmmm….) I worked on this for 5 rather stressful days since the park was quite fully booked in early August, and it wasn’t resolved until we came thru the gate at FW, but they got us and my IL’s two sites apart in the 200 loop. I was so thankful (and relieved!), I started to cry at check-in at the front gate! And trust me, I’m not “like that!”

So we get to our campsite - #204 - and just sat in our van for a few minutes. Lo and behold, Tina’s husband Darryl shows up right away with their Wildcat 5th wheel RV. We were blown away!!!!!! We normally camp in a Fleetwood Westlake popup, and this was so much nicer than we’re used to!!!!! It was like camping in a 3 room apartment, with a kids’ bedroom, a master bedroom, and a great room with kitchen, dining, and entertainment center. And the slideouts made it so spacious! For campers who figure we’re getting pretty spoiled sleeping up off the ground in our pup and rarely have a sewer hookup, we were living the good life now in Tina’s trailer. One night the dealership repair department kept my IL’s RV overnight and we had to move them and their stuff in with us. I’m pretty sure things would have gotten ugly if we’d tried to cram all 7 of us into our pup for a night. With Tina’s RV, it was no trouble at all! They slept on the fold-out sofa and there was tons of room in the fridge for everything. It was amazing. We rented Tina’s 5th wheel for nine days, and I could have lived in it for months. Thank you, thank you Tina!!!!!

We also appreciate Tina’s nice towels and her dishes! Her Mickey dishes and silverware are so cute, and her freezer can hold FOUR GALLONS of ice cream! (Our pup doesn’t even have a freezer.) I tell you, it was great. She even has a double sink. In a *trailer*!!!!!

Later that first day my sweaty IL’s arrived and they were assigned to site #202. It was perfect, so close to us, and for my 70-yo MIL, so close to the comfort station, too! Thank you, thank you, Fort Wilderness reservations agents, for straightening out our reservations mess.

We rented a golf car for a day and had a great time looping in it, as well as riding Tina’s bikes around the campground and WL. We were surprised to see so many Mickey lights and so few--actually only one--DIS Camping Board sign. But, it was at Dsnyrulz site, and we (honestly!) thought they had the best of all the Mickey lights—their globe changes colors! We were surprised how tacky some of the other sites’ décor was. Not to mention names or site numbers, but one was a long-timer in a prominent site on the 100 loop that I would have been embarrassed to be on their site and have someone think I did that! And we all cracked up when we saw the blue Mickey lights hanging way up in the trees, not too far from the cabin loops. My daughter started singing “Mickey in the Sky with Diamonds.” Pretty funny!

My IL’s left after 6 days, leaving us on our own for the rest of our trip. I’d gotten Universal tickets on the “7 day park hoppers for $86” deal that was advertised at the top of the DIS boards a few months ago. We’d never been to Universal and didn’t expect much there. We were amazed!!! The parks were much nicer than we expected and we had a great time. And it was fun to have real roller coasters to ride. We even saw the Blue Man group one night, although opinions varied and how “great” that was. Universal, we’ll be back!

Tina’s friend came to pick up her RV on the morning of the 17th, and we reluctantly said goodbye, to the RV and her bikes. Renting her RV turned out wonderfully and I’m so glad we did it. At that point, I drove over to Old Key West, where we’d rented points from a DVC member to stay in a 2 bedroom DVC villa. When we got in there, it was incredible! The place was so huge, we all thought it was bigger than our apartment when we moved to Texas! A king suite for us, two queens for the kids, two bathrooms, a washer and dryer with no quarter slots, a big balcony with a table and four chairs overlooking a small lake and the golf course, and a full kitchen with a big fridge, a garbage disposal and a dishwasher! I tell ya, between Tina’s RV and the DVC, we were really pampered on accommodations for this trip. The irony is that we’d bought into DVC before we left for the trip, and had chosen Old Key West as our home resort even though we’d never seen the place. We were so glad that we liked it!

The DVC was an especially nice place for us to be since Hurricane Fay was on her way. I was already feeling kind of ripped off because we’d done so little of the Disney parks with my IL’s, and now Fay was going to take away what was left. After a bit of pondering, I decided that we’d spend our last day at WDW at Animal Kingdom. It turned out to be our second best day there, ever! There were no lines for anything since most everyone stayed away from the parks. My 15yo rode Everest 9 times! And she got dream fastpasses and dream mouse ears! My 6yo got to start the Pocahontas show, and the girls got to pet the snake afterwards. We even got a backstage tour of Everest. The only place we got wet was on Kali, and we made it back to OKW before the storm really got going in earnest. It was a great day, which was not what we were expecting when everyone thought the parks were going to be closed that day.

On the way back to our room, I decided to drive thru FW just to see what it looked like while Fay was on her way. It was sooooo weird! Our “old” loop—2000—had been cleared out. No one was camping there and the tents were all gone. A few people had folded up their popups and left them on their sites to ride out the storm, but there were no people around. Occupancy on 2000 was 0% that night. Over on some of the other loops, it was more like 10% of the people were still there. But then I drove over to our area from this trip, 100/200, and it didn’t look much different than normal, and still had about 60% occupancy. It was very interesting to see, and I’m glad all those people on the partial sites were safely away that night. We were very grateful to be on the 3rd floor at OKW with a real roof over our heads with the impending storm on the way!

The next day—the 20th, when the storm really got going—we left for home. Fortunately, we could drive a lot faster than Fay travelled, and soon it was like a normal trip home.

So despite my screwed up reservation, my IL’s broken down RV and my MIL’s broken down knee, we still had a really good trip. We always have such fond memories of our FW time. It’s amazing how magical the place is, isn’t it? :goodvibes

...and if you made it this far, thanks for reading!

Sorry for the rough start, glad it all turned out great.

Thanks for sharing. What kind of bikes did Tina provide? Adult? Kids?
This is really something I'm interested in doing. Problem is - it's going to make me want to upgrade our 5th wheel!!!

Sue...I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed Tina's RV..it sounds really wonderfull!...we can't wait. We arrive on Sept. 27th!. I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble your in-laws had. Boy they really had a rough time of things. It does sound as if you made the best of things. 200 loop...I have requested either the 600 or 200 loop. Did you find the 5th wheel fit well in the two hundred loop...I've never checked that loop out. It does seem as if it would be a great loop close to the marina area. Are the sites fairly spacious..did they clear out the vegetation from them also?

I'm going to check my reservations and make sure they have me down for a preferred loop. I was thinking of possibly adding a dining plan..still thinking about it. They said I had until 48 hours before arrival to do that. Only, I've been reading quite a bit lately about screwed up reservations. I wil be sure to call down and confirm again before we leave.
We've never stayed in a 5th wheel either. We do have a travel trailer and it has a slide out also..but I think the 5th wheels feel so much larger because their ceilings are much higher. Gives a much more spacious appearance. I imagine we will feel like we have tons of room. (as of now..it's still me and the hubby):thumbsup2

Thanks so much for reporting on your trip..I enjoyed reading about it.

what an enjoyable trip report despite the not so great parts, I'm glad you had a good time and got out of the storms way!

Thanks, I'm glad someone from here noticed my sign although I do have to come up with something better for our next trip. I was disappointed as well with the number of Mickey lights I saw and no other signs.

Well I for one say when life throws you lemons,,stomp the crap outta them and tell life to get the heck outta the way,,THERES FUN TO BE HAD !!

(08-08-80,,Is our wed anniversary ! Thought I'd throw that in there.)

Glad things worked out and fun availed.

Post pics if you got'em

Did you add no expiration to those tickets that your in laws couldn't use? At least then it wouldn't be a complete waste of tickets...

Thanks for the report! Sounds like a good time.

we're all coming in october :cool1: :cool1:

Sorry for the rough start, glad it all turned out great.

Thanks, Denise!

Besides my MIL's knee blowout, my only big regret is that I never made it over to the Adventurer's Club, and with it closing, I never will. I'm going to have to hope that I get to FW at the same time as FWGuy Jim someday, so I can take him up on his offer and try my 1st Kungaloosh!

...yeah, I saved the recipe, but it wouldn't be the same experience at home...

Thanks for sharing. What kind of bikes did Tina provide? Adult? Kids?
This is really something I'm interested in doing. Problem is - it's going to make me want to upgrade our 5th wheel!!!

Adult bikes, three of them!!!!

Which was nice, because my big daughter didn't want to ride the pink one, and I liked the handling better on the white one. It was nice to have choices!

I thought about buying a kid bike for my little daughter and "paying it forward" to someone else in the campground when we left, but she wasn't that enthused about riding and I didn't really want to ride at her pace, anyways. Besides, Tina had something in the RV my kids were much more interested in: A gaming system with different games than they have at home! I'm pretty sure my son thought that was way better than the Disney parks on this trip. And it sure worked out well when the adults just wanted to sit around and talk...the kids always had something engaging to do.

We rented Tina's RV because I wanted to try a bunkhouse trailer, and my dh wasn't willing to buy one. It didn't take long before he admitted that this was a great way to camp for our family and it would be wonderful to have one. Not that we're planning to buy one anytime soon (famous last words, I know!), but when I buy my next car, I know I'm going to pay more attention to tow ratings. :lmao:

Happy renting and shopping! :goodvibes

...got 106,000 miles on my van...

Great Report Sue :thumbsup2

I was hoping we'd hear back from you about your trip. It sounds like a wonderful time. How is your MIL feeling now !! It's very cool that you got to be in a practically empty park...how fun is what ?!?! I can't wait to check out AK for the first time in December :)

Your accomodations sound wonderful...both the 5th wheel and Old Key West (never been there).

...Did you find the 5th wheel fit well in the 200loop...did they clear out the vegetation from them also?...

I'm going to check my reservations and make sure they have me down for a preferred loop. I was thinking of possibly adding a dining plan, still thinking about it. ...but I think the 5th wheels feel so much larger because their ceilings are much higher...

I just *know* you're going to have a great trip, Phyllis! At this point, I'm thinking FW without kids sounds pretty nice! :thumbsup2

The 200 loop was great. In site 204, we backed up to the main road, but that was never a problem. Plus, I enjoyed hearing the boat horns, the EWP music and the fireworks! They've cleared an incredible amount of vegetation, but it seems to me like it's just coming right back, so I expect they'll be coming thru again soon to clear out all the new sprouts. My MIL especially loved seeing all the palm trees, which seem more prominent now with so much of the other stuff cleared out. And it was so convenient to take the "back way" thru 100 to get to the trading post and the marina. I'd happily camp in 200 again.

Tina's RV had no trouble fitting into our site, and there was plenty of room for our van and a golf car, too, lengthwise, and the slideout, awning and bikes, width-wise. I kept wondering if people were walking by our site and scratching their heads: "Hmmm, how did those people from Texas get that big 5th wheel here with that little minivan?" We were surrounded by lots of big Class A's in 200, and my IL's little Class B looked like a tiny tadpole lost in a very big pond.

From now on, I highly recommend checking all the details on your reservation paperwork every time there's a change. It only took a second for the AAA lady to click the wrong button on the reservation screen for us but it gave me hassles for nearly a week. If my IL's weren't so old or were more serious campers, I wouldn't have worried about it, but with the situation as it was, I'm thankful we were near them. Personally, I enjoyed the dining plan in 2007 but I don't think I'd buy it now, or if I did, I'd do a split-reservation and only book DDP for a couple of days. It's just too much food in too short a time for me. We got a DDE card instead, and that worked a lot better for us, but we were covering 7 people.

I hadn't thought about the 5th wheel feeling more spacious because of the higher ceiling, but of course, you're right! My dh is over 6', and even with the ceiling fan, he never felt like he had to duck all the time. I'm glad you mentioned that...I've got to tell him!

Have fun at Tina's! You'll be there so soon now! :goodvibes

We *loved* your light, and it really inspired my dh to make one for us. Unfortunately, we have no plans for FW for at least a year and a half :sad1:, so I won't get to use it anytime soon, unless I plug it in at some non-Disney campground!

We looked for you twice, but you must have been off playing somewhere else. Hope you had a great trip!

Well I for one say when life throws you lemons,,stomp the crap outta them and tell life to get the heck outta the way,,THERES FUN TO BE HAD !!

And the mood I was in, it was a good thing that AAA lady was a safe distance away over the phone line, 'cause lemons weren't all I wanted to stomp!

(08-08-80,,Is our wed anniversary ! Thought I'd throw that in there.)

Glad things worked out and fun availed.

Post pics if you got'em

Cool anniversary! And I have to confess, I haven't learned how to post pictures yet, but when I do, look out!!!!!

Thanks!

What was tacky about the decorations? I walked through 100 loop and there was ONE on the end that was quite decorated but i didn't think it was that bad. was it that they had too much junk out?

glad to hear about tina's RV accommodations. My sister wants to keep that in mind in the future.

Did you add no expiration to those tickets that your in laws couldn't use? At least then it wouldn't be a complete waste of tickets...

Great thought, and I sure wanted to.

But I was trying to keep their expenses as low as possible and my MIL says her Disney days are done, so we didn't bother. They only used 1.5 days out of their 6 day tickets. It didn't bother them much since they were more worried about the RV and her knee, but it about killed me! (I'm kind of cheap!)

It makes me sad that we'll never be able to camp with them at FW again. I hate this aging thing!
