Something in my calf went POP went I was picking up the pace to outrun the dog to prevent him from darting thru a hole in the fence. At first I thought the dog whacked me with his paw, but knew he wasn't that close to me.

Now I can't walk properly- had a little bit of trouble stepping up two steps to get back in the house, had to get DH to give me a hand.

I had a slight cramp/charley horse in that area last night, but nothing severe. I'm going to be mindful of it at work (office), hopefully it eases up with medical treatment. There's no swelling, just tender, and I can put some weight on it.

In the meantime, OWWIE!

Any chance you tore your achilles tendon? How bad does it hurt? Do you have a lump in the back of your leg somewhere? Put your knee on a chair with your leg sticking out behind you and squeeze your calf keeping your lower leg relaxed. Did your heal move? If it didn't, call an orthopedic doctor ASAP this morning. Is it swollen?

Play it safe, go get it checked out. I hope you feel better soon! :grouphug:

No, it's not the Achilles. I probably wouldn't be able to hobble around if it was. This is right in the middle of the calf, and so far no swelling. It tightened while driving to work, about 15-20 minutes, and seems a little easier to get aound if I'm on my feet for a while.

I had something like this happen to me about 3 years ago. I was walking down the steps and I felt this "pop" in my calf followed by pain. I also had had a charley horse the night before. I ended up going to the doctor and after an ultrasound discovered that I had torn the muscle in my calf. I was on crutches for a few days and it got better on its own.

Hope that helps.

I broke down a made a Dr. appt. for this afternoon. I'm sure they'll just tell me to stay of my feet for a few days...so much for working this weekend.

pixiedust: Good luck, I hope it's nothing serious. My knees do that on occasion, from years of dance, but I've never had it so painful I couldn't move. pixiedust:

It is most likely the solis (sp) muscle in the back of our calf. This happened to me on each leg. The first time I was walking and it felt like someone hit me with a baseball bat, I actually turned around to see who hit me. The second calf, I had bruises all down my leg. You just have to let it heal. The good news my doctor told me is that once it heals, it is generally stronger than before.

 It hurts like hell, but will heal.

I really feel like I've wasted $40. All I got out of the visit was comfort that I don't have a more serious injury.

I went to the primary care physician and saw the nurse practitioner ($20 co-pay). She couldn't make a solid determination and referred me to an orthopaedic (another $20 co-pay). They confirmed that I probably tore some of the muscle tissue and advised me to take anti-infammatories (Tylenol), ice it to keep the swelling to a minimum and wrapped my lower leg with an ACE bandage. Other than that just some tips to help me, like wearing a shoes with a little bit of a lift in the heel, keeping my leg out-stretched while sitting at my desk.

I though perhaps they would give me crutches to help me get around, but they didn't. I guess I should have asked for them.

Just a FYI, Tylenol isn't an anti-inflammatory. You will need Ibuprofin for that (Motrin, Advil, etc).

I should clarify that - at first they mentioned something like Advil, Motrin, Aleve, but then the ortho said Tylenol for my particular condition. I think the others (ibuprofen, naproxin) cause the blood to thin and he was concerned with further internal bleeding.

Also an FYI ~

You need 3 - 4 Advil, 4 times a day, for the anti-inflammatory effect, which is an RX (prescription) dose.

You won't get any anti-infammatory effect with the OTC dosage, just the analgesic for pain.

Just an FYI.

Hey, you should have listened to me and saved $40! :p

Seriously, there really isn't much to do but let it heal, hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the tip! The Dr. did say to take 3 Advil as an anti-inflammatory, but when the other Dr. came in he said Tylenol instead of the Advil. I don't take Tylenol, only Advil, so thanks for letting me know that the ordinary one or two liqui-gels shouldn't be a problem.

I have been fortunate that I haven't felt the need to take any medication. I spent all of last night, from 3:30-10:30 on the sofa and my leg did feel better. I slept pretty well, except for the dog waking me (he wouldn't sleep through the night).

:thumbsup2 I surely would have given you the $40 to save myself the hassle of running to an office across the street from work, then being sent to the other side of town just to get an ACE bandage. I could have spent less than $5 at the drug beside work for the bandage.
