OTUP just increased in price

The DVC FAQ used to explain the $20pp cost breakdown as

$17.77 + $1.16 + $1.07

The last 2 were different taxes.

You can still see the old FAQ wording in the google search, but the actual DVC FAQ pages have been updated:

So, interestingly, this FAQ now states "Members enjoy a rate of $20 per one-time-use Vacation Point plus applicable tax. Please be advised these rates are subject to change."

$1.16+$1.07=$2.23 or about 12.5% of $17.77
$2.50 is also about 12.5% of $20

Doing a quick google search, it appears to me that 12.5% has always been the applicable lodging tax imposed in central FL - a 6% sales tax and a 6.5% tourist development tax. I don't see anything about a new tax.

That said, the fact that they are now re-phrasing this to be $20+tax as opposed to $22.5 (inclusive of the applicable taxes) suggests to me this is a way to implicitly raise the price by saying you're not really raising the price. I'll be surprised if MB payouts are increased accordingly, but I'd love to be surprised.

I don’t think so. That previous $17.77 per point before tax was known last year when the cost was $20pp total. I did see it right on the DVC site in the FAQ section.

I tried to get a old snapshot off the Wayback Machine but it seems Disney has the archive blocked.

Per this article, it seems as though they are subject to an additional tax now?

I know the $20 had taxes built in but this certainly read to me it was a tax increase that caused it.

The way DVC site explains the price of OTUP has changed in the FAQ

The DVC site FAQ used to say the cost was $20pp and showed the breakdown of the included 12.5% taxes.

Now when you look FAQ, it says $20pp plus applicable tax. No more breakdown. But we do know people are being told the total cost is now $22.50, which matches what 12.5% taxes would look like on $20pp.

Maybe DVC likes the sound of a nice round number like $20? Basically they raised the pre-tax price from $17.77 to $20.

eta - I think the article did not word it correctly.

“Beginning March 23, 2026 Disney Vacation Club's One Time Use points are subject to an additional Florida tax, raising the final price to $22.50 each. The amount of the increase is due to Central Florida's 12.5% tax rate on temporarly lodging.”

There were already 12.5% taxes and those do not seem to have changed

Here are my breakdown

Looks to me like a combined 12.5% tax, the exact same amount of tax yesterday as it was today. If it were a new tax, you would expect the percentage of taxes to have increased.

From the DVC News Article:
"Beginning March 23, 2026 Disney Vacation Club's One Time Use points are subject to an additional Florida tax, raising the final price to $22.50 each. The amount of the increase is due to Central Florida's 12.5% tax rate on temporarly lodging.

These points were previously offered for $20 each, a rate which included all applicable taxes."

I think that first sentence is oddly worded because it makes it sound like there is an "additional tax" that is now being added. But, I think the last sentence makes clear that it is simply that the prior $20 rate included all taxes. The new rate does not.

So it went from $20 inclusive of taxes to $20 plus taxes? Sounds like a back door price increase and a back door price increase for MMB because DVC knows members are buying MMB with a large intention of buying OTUPs for the BOGO feature.

I think that's exactly what it is . . . unless they are also upping their payout for magical beginnings. Then, it's Disney making a more comprehensive decision that the value of a point has increased. But, the fact that they didn't just come out and say, the cost of a OTUP has been increased to $22.50 suggests to me they're just doing a back door price increase on OTUPs.

You would think Disney would cut great people like us a break and drop the price to under $20 but instead they raised it.

The only thing is that it was $22 a few years ago and they lowered it to $20, and now it’s going back up.

Maybe it’s related to MMB but at least they didn’t go higher than what it was before.
