Other Vacations ...

We try to do one vacation a year, even if it's just a long weekend, to explore our home state. Michigan has so much natural beauty and so many outdoor activities. There's lots to see and do for families. We've gone all over the state in the last few years. It's great to get to know your own state a bit better. Usually we go camping but I'm so done with the tent. I want a camper. We'll probably buy one next spring. Then there's no stopping us!

Then we also have our bigger vacations where we travel out of state. We can't do it every year but we sure love it when we go. We've been to the Smokey Mountains, Disney, Chicago (which is much more kid friendly than I thought it would be!), Ohio, and Kentucky. I'm dying to go to the Black Hills, SD to see Mount Rushmore. And D.C.! Both are high on my list after this next Disney trip. :goodvibes

Hello, fellow Detroit suburb Disney fan!!! I totally agree with you about exploring your own state! Michigan has some absolutely wonderful vacation spots. We've done Sault Ste. Marie (the lock tour is awesome!), Mackinac (we splurge and stay at the Grand!), Muskegon (sledding on the dunes is amazing - until you break an arm!), the lakes (they are GORGEOUS!!!), etc. There's just so much to do here. We still have to do Painted Rocks and Taquemanon Falls - that's a trip for next year!

And, I cannot wait until we do our trip to Seattle so we can drive through the Black Hills!! My parents used to live there (as well as Alaska!) before they had us.

We try to mix it up. We've done 2 cruises (not my favorite way to vacation but it's okay when traveling in a large group) and we've been to Hawaii 4 times. We've also done Italy, Switzerland, England, France (not all on same vacation, lol), Bahamas, China and are heading to Egypt in 2 months. I have seen most of the U.S. and we started branching to other countries about 8 years ago.

The debate is already on for next year. My husband wants Costa Rica and I want Russia.

I like this thread! :goodvibes

We have gone to Cape Cod (Falmouth Heights area) with a day trip to Martha's Vineyard. DH always goes on some fishing excursion while we're there. The kids love the beaches and they especially love Martha's Vineyard (Oak Bluffs area).

We've gone to Lancaster County, PA. This was an especially big hit with DD (Then 10) who was fascinated by the Amish.

We've gone to the Jersey Shore (Wildwood Crest).

We visit family often in North Carolina (Charlotte area).

We loved Niagara Falls. This was right before I became pregnant with my first child. I'd love to go back with the kids, as they're fascinated by looking at videos of the Falls on YouTube.

Vermont is always a great weekend trip for us, especially in the fall.

We're always talking about how we want to go to D.C. (I went in the 8th Grade ... in 1986!).

We live in Indiana and it's a FANTASTIC way to get a beach vacation without driving more than 5 hours.

We have camped and rented VRBO.

We also spent a week at Anna Maria Island, FL after a week at Disney World last year. I LOVED IT. So beautiful. White sand and Caribbean Blue water [though not as clear]. The kids didn't enjoy the salt water. Spoiled by the L'Ocean [Lake Michigan].

LOL.

Since I have been a travel agent for a long time we would always try and do 1 Disney trip a year and 1 or 2 to someplace else. Since DH and I have been together (married 14 years in October) we have been to:

Cancun, Playa del Carmen (3 times), a RCCL Western cruise (Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Labadee and Cozumel), 2 Disney cruises to the Bahamas, Beaches Turks and Caicos, Secrets Punta Cana (DR), London, Paris, DL Paris, Rome, Venice, Tuscany/Florence, Pompeii/Italian coast, NOLA, Newport (RI), NYC many times for shows, etc. (I am from there), Montreal, Miami several times, Disneyland 3 times, Laguna Beach, San Diego 4 times, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Las Vegas 2 times (mostly for shows), NJ (Princeton, etc.), Maryland, Vermont, Maine.

We are planning on another Disney cruise in January and CA (to visit friends and for D23) and Hawaii next year for our 15th! 2012 will be the UK, Ireland and Scotland for 2 weeks hopefully and who knows what for the other week. DH gets 17 paid vacation/PTO days plus all bank holidays. If a holiday falls on a Saturday (like Xmas and New Years this year) they get another paid vacation day to use within 6 months. So next year he has 19 days-nice:)

MI beaches are the BEST!!! We went to Anna Maria Island to meet up with some college housemates this past summer. We rented three houses near the beach. What a wonderful place!!!! It was practically empty and the beaches and water were gorgeous!!!

We have been to most of the US. We have also been to Antigua, Hawaii (3 islands), Riveria Maya Mexico, and my favorite St. John USVI. I want to go to Europe but airfare for 5 is going to kill us.
