Besides the theme parks??

Any ideas anyone? We will be doing the parks but would like to do some other things in or around the area. We are going to drive to Daytona one day but what else??

Hi,

We are out in Orlando at the moment and happened to be chatting to a family from Ohio around the pool thismorning. She told us about a place called Rock Springs which is really nice for lazy river type swimming in a state park. It is Kelly Park, Rock Spring, Apopka - very cheap as it is a state park - they spent 4 hours there on Monday :)

Not sure if we have a spare day to take a look at it but it may be of interest for anyone in the planning stages.

Lake Louisa State Park is nice too. It has a beach that is open till Labor Day, depending on when you are coming, and there are also walking trails. You would just take 192 west to 27 and then take 27 north (I think...towards Clermont anyway) to get to the state park. There is a winery with free tastings farther down 27 too...interesting to see a vineyard in FL!

Going the State Park route is always a good idea. If you're going during the winter months you might consider Blue Spring State Park in Orange City - about an hour north of Orlando via I-4 - where you can see manatees. But as the water gets warmer, beginning in April or so, they head back down the St. Johns River toward the Atlantic.
We like to visit Winter Park, a community that is a bit more old Florida-like than what you'd see in Orlando (shopping, arts, and a neat old-fashioned boat tour of the area lakes).
If you're visiting Daytona I'm guessing that you're going to the beach. But if that isn't you're destination then you should consider hitting one or more of the beaches. Cocoa Beach is less than an hour from Orlando via SR 528 and the Gulf Coast beaches (county and state parks in St. Petersburg, Clearwater and either north or south) on the western part of the state are about an hour and a half to two hours away.
Locally, you might want to take in the town of Celebration for the nature trails, shopping, and dining.
Downtown Disney or Universal's City Walk are good for an evening out of dining, the movies and some shopping.
Kennedy Space Center over near Cocoa Beach could be an interest place to go, particular if there's going to be a launch.
Plenty of outlet shopping and a variety of malls right in Orlando.
Busch Gardens in Tampa.

Please go watch sea turtles hatch on the beach so I can live vicariously through you. I'm never there during the season.

sea turtles? hatching? where does this happen and when? sounds like a fun AND educational experience! any info most appreciated! thanks

If you like flea markets, there are three huge ones in the area. There's one in Kissimmee, Sanford and Mount Dora. I love going all checking out all the stuff.

We hang by the resort most of the time but when we do venture out we'll go to the outlet malls to do some shopping. My son and i are car fans and head down to Old town in Kissimmee on saturday night for the cruise night. It is "touristy" but still fun and free.
