Ok, I have the drill down with taking your laptop with you on the plane. I have also in the past taken my ipod as well. I know that you have to take out your laptop and run it through in its own bin and they have never questioned my ipod.

This time I will have a couple of additional things with me. I will have actually two gps units. One is for the car and the other is for the golf course. I will have them in a carry case with all their respective cables and chargers and that carry case will be in my carry on bag. Now I will have my shoulder bag and a small rolling suitcase that fits in the overhead. What will give me the least headaches if there are any? The shoulder bag or suitcase? I will definintely NOT put them in my checked luggage.

Thanks very much

We fly several times a year. We've always left our GPS in one of my husband's carryon bags (a backpack) and have never had a problem.

I had all my 'toys' with me this last trip, and the only thing that had to come out on its own was the laptop.

We just flew to Tahiti, changing in LAX, so we went through 4 screeners total. We took a bunch on electrical devises along to amuse us during our flights. As long as they didn't have cords attached, they were fine in the bags. The screener said if they have an attached cord, it would need to be removed. I tied each charger cord seperately and neetly, and put them in their own bag. We were fine.

I'd put the electronics in the bag that would make it easiest to get them out if necessary. On occasion (rarely) I've experienced a TSAer requiring all electonics, "anything with an on/off switch" to be out of the bags. You never can tell.

You used to have to take DVD players out, but I don't think you have to anymore. At least, we didn't have to on our last flight.

The TSA website says that dvd players, laptops, and full sized video game consoles must be removed from the carry-on bag when going through security:

Do not pack oversized electronics (laptops, full-size video game consoles, DVD players and video cameras that use cassettes) in your checked baggage when possible. However, please be advised that you will be required to remove these items from your carry-on bag and submit them separately for x-ray screening.

On my last trip through MCO I was pulled aside with my nook in my bag. They mistook it for a DVD player. Just be prepared for anything when it comes to the TSA.

Laptop comes out always, but most other things can stay in the bag. Still, you will want to pack them right on top where TSA can easily get to them if they feel the need to examine them.

One thing I always do is to put any wires, bricks, headphones, etc. that I won't need for the flight itself in a ziploc in a different area of the bag (or in my checked bag if I've got one, for the weight reduction of not having to lift them into the overhead.) This assures that you won't get your cords tangled up in your hands or have them get in the way when you are trying to quickly maneuver items in and out of the bag.
