OT - would you complain to the school? UPDATED

popcorn:: I find this an interesting discussion. I'd rather keep my opinion to myself on all of it.

I teach Music - Kindergarten through 6th Grade. I have NEVER shown a movie to my students. This is lazy. The woman should try teaching. Kids seem to like it.

I asked my daughter how she likes her music class. She said she likes it a lot the teacher is nice but keeps breaking her promise. I asked her what that was and she said "to let us play musical instruments". My 7 yr old actually asked me to call the teacher to see if they can do muscial things soon!

I left a voicemail for the teacher apoligizing for going to prinicpal first, wasn't my goal to "make something bigger of it than it needed to be" as she put it in her voicemail. I also let her know I wasn't "upset" as she said in her voicemail. I asked that she send home the list of movies she said she sent home once already (List of movies? She only sees them once every 6 days .... how many movies does she have on the list for a year?). I also told her that my child says she enjoys her class and is looking forward to playing musical instruments soon.

I asked my daugther about the teacher just showing the musical clips as the teacher told me in the voicemail and even worded it to give the teacher the benefit of the doubt "Your teacher just showed the musical parts of the movie, did you like it?" - her response - Mommy, she showed the whole movie but hit fast forward for a couple of the songs :sad2:

i like nightmare before christmas but def. don't think it's appropriate to be shown to 2nd graders in a school setting. that said-i have to question why if a teacher did show it in a music class, it was just a 'for fun' movie. this is a movie that could lend itself to teaching music students so much about various aspects of composition, vocal technique, and utilizing computers to layer multiple tracts of one singer (the composer danny elfman) to create what sounds like entire choral works (plus he did all the singing for jack skellington/i would have the class watch some scenes from the johnny depp 'willy wonka' (again not my idea of something a school should show to 2nd graders) so they could realize/learn about/discuss how one person skilled (and very talented) can do multiple styles of vocal music (elfman did all the singing for the oompa loompa songs, and the styles of vocal 'sounds' vary greatly). seems like the music teacher kind of missed the boat not only by showing a movie that i think most feel is inappropriate but by missing out on an actual teaching opportunity.

I am surprised they show so many movies in class if they only have it every 6 days. When DD was in elementary school they only had it every 6 days as well. The music teacher spent every class teaching songs since they had a program to get ready for. Even if they start the first day of school they will probably only have about 15 classes before their program, if that. That isnt much time to prepare.

Record weekly progress (or lack of it) in music class. Hopefully you won't need it, but the information may come in handy some day if another complaint needs to be voiced. I hope your daughter gets to play musical instruments and have other positive experiences soon.

Again - I feel that this teacher is lazy. Your children can watch a movie at home or at a friend's house. They don't go to school to watch movies. Kids go to school to learn. The music teacher needs to provide experiences that kids don't normally have with music. That is what teaching is all about.

WHY do some teachers not want to teach? You did the right thing by complaining. Take care of your child. Don't settle for less.
