OT: Williamsburg VA inexpensive stuff to see?

Hi! We are going to Williamsburg for our first family trip (Great Wolf Lodge) and it only NOW occurred to me that there is other stuff to do there! Besides, my little girl is studying all that Colonial stuff this year, so it would be great to see some of the educational stuff, too! But you know how the internet is- you try to look up stuff and there is so much to wade through...

Anyway, anybody know of activities/sights that are inexpensive/free? I looked at a few but they were out of our budget. Can you still walk around Colonial Williamsburg for free, if you don't go in the buildings? What is really neat there??!!!

Yes you can still walk around Colonial Williamsburg for free.

If you work anything into your budget Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center are great hands on type museums for kids. You can get a combo ticket to do both of these museums for 17.75A/8.50C. You get the most bang for your buck with these two (especially with children).

If you've never been on a ferry before, this is fun and free. My kids enjoy doing this.

I live nearby and we usually just walk in CW, too. I have a guidebook and I play tour guide with the kids. There are also lots of gardens, some maizes, and trees for climbing, such as the one behind the Courthouse near the Tucker House. My kids love it there. I have a picture of 3 of my kids in 2001 in my siggy.

There are good places for picnics, too. The reenactments and Fife and Drum parades are a must see. There is a schedule on the CW website: www.history.org

There is also the Yorktown Waterfront with a beach: http://www.yorkcounty.gov/parksandrec/parks/h20front.htm Of course, the showers and restrooms are open seasonally. Also, here is the link the parks and rec department: http://www.yorkcounty.gov/parksandrec/parks/parks_home.htm There are a lot of outdoor activities to do at places like the York River State Park, such as hiking, biking, and canoeing.

Oh, I know you didn't ask, but for those interested there is a Target at 4630 Monticello Ave
there. Just thought I would mention it.

Oh the shame I live so close and only go there for Busch Gardens and the Prime Outlet Malls.
Its not cheap but Busch Gardens is great this time of year all done up for Halloween.
If I was staying at Great Wolf Lodge I would never leave the lodge I LOVE THAT PLACE...
