I know this is an odd question coming from an American, but I'm hoping to pick your brains. :p My DH & I were discussing summer vacation & we can't really think of anywhere we want to go. This is absurd for us, because we absolutely love vacations. We're just drawing a blank for some reason. :confused3

My DH was kind of wanting to take another cruise, but our DS doesn't enjoy them. :( Our son (15) is getting old enough to want to take a friend with him. This means our options are limited to the US. I don't want to take someone else's kid out of the country. Plus, I wouldn't want to ask them to purchase a passport for their child.

Now that I've bored you with so much info, I'm hoping you'll have some suggestions. Is there any other place, besides WDW &/or DL that you'd like to visit in the US? (We live within an hour of WDW, & can visit any time. Living in the US, we kind of take if for granted sometimes. I know there's lots of places in Europe I'd like to visit, so I thought you guys may have some US destinations you'd like to visit that we may not have thought of. Thanks in advance for your infinite wisdom. :teeth:

I've been to New York, not exactly a relaxing vacation but very cool and also vermont skiing...which was brilliant. I'd love to go to Washington/ vegas and the new england area. Been to canada also which is really good, lots to do and see!

Places I haven't been but would like to include Chicago, New Orleans, Houston, San Diego, Seattle and Hawaii.

I have been to the following and would love to go back Boston, DC, NYC, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Mount Rushmore, Denver, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, The Tetons, Salt Lake City, Bryce Canyon and Zion Canyon, Miami and The Keys.

Claire ;)

Oh the list is endless for me...New York,California, Las Vegas, Oklahoma, Philadelphia, San Francisco to name but a few.

Good luck, I hope you manage to sort something out:thumbsup2

California (LA, San Diego, San Francisco), New York, New England and Boston, Hawaii,

You aren't going to believe this, but I was born & raised in the Mtns. of NC & have never been skiing. When you're surrounded by it, life seems to always get in the way of doing the fun stuff.

My hubby & son haven't been to NYC. My son has been to DC, but he was too young to remember. My DH hasn't. I'll add those to our list of considerations. It's been quite a few years since I've visited either of them. My DH & I have been to Vegas, but our DS hasn't. Something else to consider. Thanks :)

If you want to visit those places, you should add San Antonio to your list. We love many of cities you've visited or want to visit, & SA fits in with them well. FYI, if you don't know someone in Houston you're going to visit, you may want to think twice about going there.

Jackson Hole, WY seems like a popular place to visit. What's there to see &/or do there? As a matter of fact, we've never been to any of these places: Lake Tahoe, Mount Rushmore, Denver, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, The Tetons, Salt Lake City, Bryce Canyon and Zion Canyon

I'd love to hear more about your visit(s) there.

What did you do in Oklahoma? We haven't been there either. :)

I'll look into Boston, as well. I've been to Mass., but not Boston. My parents loved to travel, but they weren't much for major cities. My family is the opposite. We just haven't been that far north yet.

Mount Rushmore, Denver, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, The Tetons, Salt Lake City, Bryce Canyon and Zion Canyon - All of these can make a great road trip as the scenery is stunning. You can get to see quite a few National Parks and go white water rafting, hiking, horse trails etc.

As for Lake Tahoe another great place for scenery and to be honest Yosemite is also a fantastic place for scenery, all the waterfalls and sheer cliffs.

I saw an ad in the press for a holiday a few weeks ago... where you could catch a train from east coast to west...sometimes sleeping on the train sometimes stopping off for a few days ...spectacular scenery on the way, stopping off at all the must see locations on the way..sounded very cool

I was going to suggest San Antonio, but obviously you have been! We went a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it, can't wait to go back.

I'd like to visit all the usual tourist places plus anywhere that's considered Cowboy Country. :worship:

I would visit New Mexico or Idaho. Coeur D'Alene is beautiful, I loved it growing up as a kid, they have a nice resort there:

It's not that far from Spokane, Washington and there's lots to see in Washington too.

Let us know what you pick!

Wow! I can understand how difficult the choice is - you live in a spectacular and very accesible country, I have visited many times and still have a thousand places I want to go to.
My suggestions would be:

a 3 centre city break, say 4 nights in each of NYC, Washington, Boston or Las Vegas, SF & Los Angeles,
or a national parks circuit like Claire suggested.
or a new england tour,
or tour more locally and take in the deep south.

I've only visited Florida so far but would love to visit New York next. Hopefully next year we'll be going there and also Boston, Virginia and New Jersey if finances allow (needs to be cheaper than this year's trip to WDW will be!)
In 2009 I want to visit the west coast taking in California (Anaheim for DL, San Francisco, Los Angeles), Vegas and maybe Arizona.

How about a western based tour. Grand Canyon - LA then up Big Sur to Saan Francisco

I've never heard of that. We've talked about taking a train adventure, but haven't found exactly what we're looking for. This may be it. :teeth: I hope I can find more info via Google. :wizard:
