DD just turned 9. She says Gymboree clothes are too babyish for her. I used to get her a lot at Talbots, but they're closing their kids' stores. She does like the Gap, but where else should I try for her? We never seem to have much luck at Old Navy - plus, last summer I couldn't believe some of the Old Navy girls' shorts - low rise, short shorts on my baby? No way!

Any suggestions?

My dd is only 5, but one of my friend has a 9 year old, and she loves Justice for Girls, and places like Limited Too. I agree with you on those shorts...I was shopping for shorts for my dd, and I saw lots of really, really short, shorts...I don't understand, but why do they make shorts soooo short for little girls!! That's why I still like Gymboree for my 5 yo and I also sew my dd's clothes.

My DD's just 2.5, but the vast majority of her clothes come from Target. They just seem to have really cute things for really good prices. If your DD will let you, I suggest checking it out...

my dd8 (almost 9) wears a uniform for school, so we don't need many street clothes, and since our school is a uniform school, I'm lucky that the "labels" and brand names don't really matter to the kids yet.* I pretty much shop at Target for dd.* I just can't see spending a lot of money on clothes when she's growing SO fast, and she only really wears them on weekends.* Some moms I know look out for the sales at Limited Too (I guess the regular prices are pretty high). DD wears a 10 pants and 10/12 shirt, so she can also wear XS ladies clothes (sometimes).* Gives us a few more options.*

I have a real problem with the clothes they have out there for girls. My daughter is 8 I want her to look like an 8 year old not 8 going on 14! So I keep searching and searching for age appropriate clothes. Let me know if you find something good out there!;)

It's really appalling what's out there for girls this age! My 8 (nearly 9) yo DD will be the first to say, "No, Mom, that's not my style -- it looks like something ____ (her way-too-grown-up-for-her-age cousin) would wear." I think homeschooling (and therefore little peer pressure for brands, etc) helps, but we're not prudes by any stretch, nor do we have religious convictions about certain styles of clothing. We just want comfort, and for all the important parts to be covered. :rotfl: Oh, and nothing written across the butt. As my DD says, "No one needs to be reading any bumper stickers on me!"

I totally agree! most of targets clothes are ok. I won't buy anything w/ wording on dd's behind, and no short-shorts. And I know this is probably silly, but no Bobby Jack clothes. Am I the only one who thinks a little girl wearing the initials BJ on her clothes is shocking and inappropriate?? Who made up that name to have the initials BJ??????? I just can't bring myself to support it.

Um Salvation Army?

Seriously. We just went for a "big" shop yesterday. I have 3 kids, nearly 8, 6 and 3 and I do 90% of our shopping here. Yup, even for me.

Our score was:

for Oldest DD - 3 pair of jeans (2 limited 2, 1 Old navy)
2 pair of Khakis (old navy, Abercrombie)
5 sweaters (Abercombie, Gap, American Eagle, WDW, Children's place)
3 dresses (Children's place, Limited 2, Gap)
4 long sleeved t's (WDW, Tommy, Gap and ON)
4 screen print t's for layering (Assorted, 2 NWT)
3 skorts (ON, Faded Glory and a company I've never heard of)
2 button down blouses 3 polo shirts.
2 pr chuck taylors
1 pair of figure skates

younger DD-
4 pairs of jeans (Tommy, ON, LImited and Children's place)
3 pair of Khakis (On, Gap, Limited and Faded Glory)
3 sweaters (Tommy, Abercrombie, Gap)
5 long sleeved T's (Tommy, Gap, ON, Children's place, Faded Glory)
4 dresses (Children's place, gap, ON)
5 screen print t's (MOstly faded glory, but I know at least one was ON)
2 skorts (ON and Limited2)
4 button down blouses 2 polo shirts.
1 pr sketchers
1 pr Stride Rite shoes
2 pair figure skates

They boy
5 pairs of jeans (Faded Glory, Gap (NWT), Gymboree, Kid Connection and CHerokee)
3 pairs of Khakis (Gap, 2 ON 1 NWT)
2 sweaters (Gap, CHildren's place)
7 long sleeved t's (Mostly Gap, some ON, 2 unknown)
5 screen print T's (Assorted, some I never heard of 3 NWT)
5 polos and 2 button down shirts.
1 pair dress shoes
1 pair Nikes
1 pair "work boots"

Total spent?

$133.47

COnsidering the New With Tag items would have been $85 just by themselves if I had paid retail for them, it was a bargain and a half!! Everything was in "like new" condition with no rips or stains - even the shoes!

Yes, you do need a bit of patience since Thrift store shopping is not the most organized, but it is SO worth it to me!!

My dd is 10 and we shop at Limited Too. I know there are people that think their clothes are too old, but I have no problem with their clothes. They carry things for older teens, so yes there are some styles that I would not buy.
Dd is not allowed to wear the shorts because they are too short but other than that we make out very well.
I also get her some stuff at Childrens Place, but nothing that says "place" on it because its to babyish (her words). Their slim jeans fither better than anyone elses.
The other stores we shop at are Old Navy, Kohls and sometimes Target.

Well said! :thumbsup2

We like the Children's Place. My dd is a very tall seven year old and she varies in sizes between 11/12 and 13/14....I just wish they had larger sizes. I have no clue where we are going to shop next. :scared1:

Landsend has a great selection of girl's clothing that are age appropriate and cute. Their overtocks section also has a good selection. It is the only place I can find swimsuits for my daughter that she feels comfortable in.

The best part is if you order something and don't like it, you can return it to any local Sears store.

I would try a major department store like Penny's or Macys. You can usually get a good sale and sometimes they have coupons. My girls are only 4 and 2, but I refuse to shop at Justice and Limited too when they get older. I might consider buying stuff there at the end of season on clearance, but I don't want my kids to be snobby about clothes and have to have their clothes from a certain place.
My friend spent $400 at Justice on a few items for her girls ages 6 and 9 because she said that they would only want clothes from that store... and then had to go to Target to get them a bunch more.

I would recommend Hanna Andersson as well as Lands' End and LL Bean. I like Children's Place too- their items are trendy without being trashy.
Gap is always my first stop- but we love Gymboree for now. When my girls get bigger I think Lands' End will be a staple store for us.
I have also been known to check out thrift stores- especially for playclothes. I like Ebay as well to pick up some of the more expensive brands like Oilily and Deux par Deux.
Try your local department stores too. Around here we use Kohls, J.C. Penny, and Macy's. They all have their own lines of kids clothing and can be very affordable.
Good luck!

I buy my DD's clothes at Limited Too, JC Penney, Macy's and Kohl's. She loves all her clothes and I'm very picky about lengths and fit. I go when they are having sales, like extra 20% off of sale prices.

I'd say 90% of DD8's clothes come from Kohls. She's not much of a shopper and only really likes plain jeans & shirts. She's a girly tomboy if that makes any sense. She likes to look nice in her eyes but no lace, frills, etc. Lots of brown but she puts it together well.

She wears slims & we can usually go in & find several pairs of jeans & shirts she likes & coordinate. Easy & done. She also has a cousin that has started giving her bags of clothes so she has some name brands now. She doesn't care or know the difference & I'm happy to leave it that way. DD14 is into all that brand stuff but thankfully likes to find them as bargains too.

I totally agree. When DD was 3, she sat in bird poop on a bench in Epcot. Rather than go back to the hotel to change, I decided I'd just buy her a new outfit. The only shorts they had in her size said "Tinker Bell" across the butt. I bought them because there was nothing else. When DH saw them he said, "Those shorts are going to be pajamas when we get home, right?"

Definitely try Hanna Andersson. I have bought my DD clothes there for years. The little playdresses with matching leggings are so comfy and they LOOK like a LITTLE girl! She's a bit bigger in the belly (not even chubby at all) and stuff like Limited Too and the Gap are so long and lean. Plus they look too old for my taste. I like how Hanna herself says they believe kids should look like kids!

Hanna's wear so well, and she's usually gotten two years out of the outfits, sometimes more but I get sick of seeing her in the same outfits day after day.

I try to get stuff on sale there, since you could end up spending a lot. I used to get my kids matching striped tees there, so at Disney I could spot them in a crowd. Now my DS is too old for that look, but DD loves it still.
