I'm wondering what our options are for our dd after she starts school. There are teacher work days, holidays, fall breaks, spring break, christmas break, summer, the list goes on and on. Both dh and I have full time jobs. Mine is M-F, 8-5 and DH's is wacky since he's the Sports Editor for the local newspaper. Right now, dd3 is in daycare but she will start Pre-K next fall which are in the Elementary schools. When school is in session, we'll be able to use after-school care at the school for $6/day which goes as late as 6:00 so that's not a problem. But what are families to do where both of the parents work? We do not have any relatives nearby either. Both sets of grandparents are 3 1/2 - 4 hours away. I'm sure we can't be the only ones out there that have this problem. Is there anything that actually works in this situation - ie open whenever school is out? And what kind of costs are there? I'm just not sure where to look. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Many agencies offer after school type programs when school is out.
Check out the YMCA and YWCA. Your local parks and museums may have some programs as well

Our school district's after care program is also a no school day program. It is a little higher cost on those weeks when they are various days off, but it is available and from what I understand most kids who are in the after school program use it.

Over the summer ours doesn't run, so I don't know what people do then but I do know we have the Y programs and Boys & Girls Club available too.

Does the afterschool program your daughter will attend for school also offer an option for those full days that she won't be going to school? Where I am, many of the afterschool options for parents offer this type of all day program when needed. They obviously charge more for those days, but it is available. Check with the afterschool program and ask what they have or what they suggest. There are probably other kids/parents in the same situation attending the same afterschool program as your daughter.
