This is something I have wondered about for a long time. Why is Scar so evil? Were his parents always ignoring him and fawning over Mufasa, the future king? How does one brother get to be so noble and the other so malevolent? DH and I used to speculate that Scar was in love with Sarabi and Mufasa somehow took her away from him.

We read some of the new "My Side of the Story" books where the Disney villians explain things from their POV. All of them, it turns out, were tragically misunderstood! The books are really clever and funny. I'm hoping for a Lion King version so that I can understand where Scar is coming from.

In the meantime, I would love to hear your thoughts and theories!

I think its the old royal family issue.

The first born gets to be king while the second born doesn't get anything. Scar also believes he is smarter than his brother so he deserves to be king.

What drama! :rotfl:

Um, you might want to read some of the many, many critical books about Hamlet, since LK essentially *is* Hamlet, but with animals, and with some of the secondary characters changed around. Scar is Claudius, of course.

As to why he's so evil, the answer mostly lies in the system of primogeniture. The eldest son got everything, which meant that the younger son had neither power nor wealth, and which also meant (especially in the animal analogy) that the eldest son had the best choice of mate as well. Claudius (and Scar) is a walking metaphor for the Seven Deadly Sins.

UM... they are lions and see lion prides only have 1 male, the other males are excommunicated... its just natrual selection in action
