With Ontario's ban on herbicides, I've been looking at stand-up weed pullers to save my knees and back!

The most popular ones seem to be Lee Valley's Grampa Weeder, Fiskar's weed puller and Weed Hound.

There are pros and cons for all of them, for example size of hole left in the lawn, the weed puller itself breaks, ease of use.

Wondered if any DISer's have any of these or perhaps something else and what your opinions are.

We just bought the one in the Canadian Tire flyer this week. I believe it was the Fiskars. I thought is worked well. Certainly beat all the work I'd be doing on my hands and knees. Sometimes it got the whole root, sometimes not. It did leave a fair size hole but it seemed to fill in some by yesterday. I didn't really notice. I paid 35 dollars on sale but I thought it was worth it. It came with a 25 yr guarentee. I would recommend it.

I like the Fiskars too. Been using it since last summer. My 8 -9 year old can use it. he helps me pull the weeds. I heard neighbours commenting how easy it looked when i was weeding my side yard today. it's full of dandelions. I got most of them out, but some still stayed. I just fill the holes with grass seed.

Some guys with aerators came by today. i said, i've been weeding so much why would i need aerating!

yup Fiskars is the one my mom bought about 2-3 years ago - and her and I have been using it ever since....I LUV IT! The holes do close over fairly quickly. I havent had any experience with any others but im sure you'll be happy with Fiskars

Good luck, happy weeding!

I bought the fiskars this weekend at Canadian Tire.. I had enough scratch cards to get it for free.. Looking forward to trying it out soon. From your reviews I am glad I got it!

I didn't see the sale Fiskar in our CT store when I was there yesterday, they may have been sold out. I did see a cheaper model - just under $30.

I noticed the flyer sale goes until May 22 so I will have to go back to the store and check this out.

Thank you for the reviews!

I got the cheaper one at Can Tire a couple of weeks ago. It is reg $20 on sale $15. It's solid green in color and I think it work very similar to the more expensive one.
Love it. The holes fill in quickly.
Oddly it is cheaper at Can Tire than at Walmart.

endy, are you referring to the Weed Hound weed puller? It's all green in colour and has nail-like spikes at the end. I saw two models at Home Depot.

Weed Hound = Horrible. Just my opinion, but it barely worked on dandelions, let alone the crazy thistles I have to tackle over 2.5 acres.

Fiskars (the expensive version) on sale in the CT flyer this week... I'm on my second. Received one for my brithday last June, broke the first week of use. Apparently my deeply rooted thistle was a task it was not ready to tackle!!

When we called Fiskars about the warranty, they were useless ("What product? Hum, I didn't think we made a weeder? Will have to ask my manager for assistance.") Ended up taking it back to CT with the receipt my MIL kept, and was able to exchange for a new one. Now that the product is picking up in fame, I don't expect replacement problems should be an issue - although I question the "25 years warranty" since how does one prove they washed and took perfect cleaning care after each use??

In any case, I love the Fiskars and only use when the ground is damp per the warranty rules. Read the fine print carefully ;)

HTH!!

My neighbour came over on the weekend when we were using it and mentioned that we wouldn't need to aerate our lawn...haha. Holes are all gone now!

Dh also mentioned about the warranty and imagining having to "send it back" if it broke. Could be interesting!

Yes it the Weed Hound, all green in color. So far it's been great for me.

I picked up the Fiskars on the week-end here in Ingersoll. You could always come down here and pick one up!

My hubby loves the Fiskars from Canadian Tire. He showed to our neighbours and now they all have one.

Thanks for your reply, endy! :)

I decided to go with the Fiskars that was on sale for $34.98 at CT. I had to get a raincheck and picked it up today. I had over $7. in CT money so that was a big incentive too!

It's supposed to shower overnight so I will try out my new weed puller tomorrow!

Thanks for all the reviews! I'll let you know what I think too! :)

We bought the fiskars one from c/t too - it works great!! All our neighbors have them now too ;)

holy weeds batman.

we got back from our disney trip last weekend at midnight so it wasn't until the next morning that my mouth dropped when i opened the door.

it's like those yelleo turn white things took over all our tulips (which by the way have vanished this year)

while i understand the ban i HATE it. we've never seen so many weeds EVER

agrrr

I have recently purchased a Fiskar weed puller also. They are fantastic and prevent back ache when weeding :)
