OT Washing Detergent

Hi

I don't think I'm breaking any rules in this post but I'm looking for advice

We are going to be spending 3 weeks in Florida in August. DD (6) has excema - thankfully not too badly but washing detergent can make it worse.

As we live in England I was wondering can anyone suggest the best washing detergent that is mild and also gets rid of the stains (usual 6 year old stuff - ketchup, ice cream and chocolate )

In England the buzzwords are 'hypoallergenic' and 'non biological' but not sure if those are just UK marketing babble.

Also, I can never understand why most washing stuff is made by about two global companies, why are there so many brands and why call it different names, in different countries

One brand that I like to use on my daughter's clothes and blankets is Method. They have a product called Free + Clear. It's hypoallergenic, dye and fragrance free. Here's a link to their website.

You may want to look for Dreft (laundy soap for babies) in a pink box or bottle. Also, the words you want to look for are "free" and "clear". Several brands offer a free and clear variety (no added scents or coloring). These are not specialty brands and should all be easy for you to find.

I have a daughter with very sensitive skin and if we use any detergent other than Tide her skin breaks out.

We did not have any skin trouble with Dreft, but I had a hard time treating stains with it.

We've been able to use anything that says it's free and clear. All free and clear is my personal favorite.

Both DD and I have issues with laundry soap. And no one in my family can use Tide (too harsh). We use purex http://www.purex.com/detergents/ultra-purex-free-clear/

Really? Dreft stain treater is one of the best things that I have found to get stains out of my dd clothes. DH also has sensative skin and we use anything that is free & clear. Purex has these really neat laundry sheets that come in the free & clear that are great for traveling, instead of lugging a bottle of soap. It has the soap, fabric softner & anti static all in one sheet that you just put into the wash and then the dryer.

I'm so glad I read your thread. I've been in a laundry detergent disaster. I can't use Tide (it breaks me out in hives faster than you can blink). I used to be able to use Cheer. That was until they changed to the Cheer HD. I think I'm going to be taking a trip to Target to check out this Method stuff.

Arm and Hammer make a scent-, dye- and allergy-free detergent. It's all I've used EVER.

Do you use powder of liquid??

If powder, why not just pack enough for your trip in your luggage? If it is liquid maybe try to find a powder form now and try it out at home to avoid any reaction at WDW!

I second this if you are using powder. On one of our trips, DW measured and packed about 8 "snack sized" ziplock baggies of powder, then put all of those in a quart or gallon (can't remember which) ziplock. Easily packed and easily used.

I highly recommend Tide Free (free of perfumes and dyes). My DH, DS, and I have sensitive skin. I used Tide Free even when my toddlers were infants and had no problems. My mother uses regular Tide, which does bother us.

Tide does well on stain removal but if I have something really stubborn, I use Zout. It is the best stain remover I have found. It's rare that I can't get a stain out of something.

Thanks for the replies - it's certainly given me some ideas of what to look out for. Also great tips about the stain removers. One tip for you, washing up liquid works great on grease stains

I usually use liquitabs not powder, I was trying to avoid taking too much stuff with us, which was why I thought if I could find a suitable alternative it would be easier to buy it rather than taking it with me. We always seem to have a lot of luggage particularly for 3 weeks and the airline luggage allowances seem to be shrinking. I also need to leave some space for all the shopping I plan to do - I love the outlet malls


Now I'm all set on the type of detergent to use all I'll have to do is work out how to use the washing machine (yours aren't like the ones at home)

Hi I use Drift Baby Detergent strong enough to take out baby stains and should not bother the excema. Good Luck

My children both suffered from severe eczema as infants. I used Ivory Snow liquid detergent for their clothing then, and still do now, even though they are 6 and 3 now. They still have quite sensitive skin and do have the occasional flareups of eczema during the winter months (I live in Canada).

For those of you that have kids or have really bad eczema yourself, have you ever had a flair up when traveling from hotel towels & sheets? DH has eczema. It normally just flairs up in the winter, but a few times when we have traveled (on cruise ships specfically) he has had really bad flair ups. We guess it is from the bleach they use on the towels.
