Hello :)

We just had our basement finished and have put carpeting in. We decided to have the central vac roughed in while they were doing all of the work. Now we are at the point where we must decide if we want to actually buy the central vac system now, or just pick up something like a $110 to 150 upright. Our Sears canister vac is pretty much dead. We do still use it as we have a dog that sheds a lot

So today I went looking. Sears has a central vac system on sale for 640 or something in that range. It comes with the power head for the carpet. I also looked at Leons, which carries Eureka brands from about 549 to 699. Does anyone have any experience with Central vac? Is it worth the investment to have it? We were thinking maybe we'd just go with an upright and then down the road have the central put it, but maybe we are better just doing it now?

If we do go with an upright which kind should we go with? I saw two I liked at Walmart ... I believe they were Eureka too? or Hoover? I saw so many today I am overwhelmed.

If anyone can tell me their experiences I'd really appreciate it!!!

thanks so much
Kerri

I was listening to a radio show on a Saturday a few weeks ago. The guest was a vacuum repair person who owns (for decades!) a shop in London. He repairs all kinds, and, yes, even the makers will send customers his way. I was intrigued with his comment that basically said.....central vac is the only way to rid the dust properly. All others-and he gave examples of expensive brands of uprights and canisters- put dust back into the household!

We have a Kenmore central vac with parts that we have replaced through Sears and that same vacuum store-Beam products, I think for the hose. I like the suction on it, and the ease of moving through the house. We have the carpet head, and other attachments. It's easy to use and even my husband was able to install it (came roughed in the house when we built). My biggest complaint-and it was before the central vac-getting the stairs!

Good luck with your decision!

Unless you get something like a Dyson or an Oreck ,your putting the dust you've just picked up back into the room. Unfortunately these machines are pretty expensive,,,,but seem to be worth it in the long run.
I've had 3 Hoovers,1 Eureka,1 Viking,2 Kenmore and others (that I can't remember) over the last several years and they have all been totally useless.
We used to have a Cental Vac but we ripped it out because it was a piece of junk.
Our solution.........remove the carpets and lay laminate floors :goodvibes

I have few carpets so just have an upright. We just bought a new Bissel and it seems pretty good so far. There are plenty of filters on it that I am constantly cleaning so it must be trapping something!!

I hate my vacuum right now. It's rebelling! :lmao:

We are just about to put a central vac in our new house and we have been searching around a bit. We have found that Sams Club or Costco have some good deals on I beleive a Beam system. We are though going to bit the bullet and install a better system through a dealer but we got a great deal (family member). We have pets and in our existing house we have gone through three uprights (hoovers) and one canister (kenmore) in 4 years with just a small dog and a cat. I see my parents place and it is just so much more efficient to have the central vac.

Get a Dyson!!!

They are now available in Canada - I have seen them at Costco and Sam's Club.

I bought the Yellow one a couple of years ago when we lived in the US.

IT IS THE GREATEST! I LOVE MY DYSON!

It's probably the only item I have ever bought that I've been totally thrilled with. I just marvel at the stuff it picks up, even with brand new carpeting! Worth every penny!
