Well I decided on a phone for me. It is only 89.00 with no contract on Rogers. It just came out - it the Samsung Hype. It is full QUERTY keyboard, and is tiny - looks like a little BB. But it is a payas you go phone but I can activate it on my plan so I don't have to renew a contract.
As for my son. He is going with the Rumor for 68.00 prepaid. The student plans are on 2 yr contract.
So we are going prepaid monthly. I am paying for 25.00 for him to have unlimited n/w from 6pm - 7 am and he is paying an extra 10.00 to have 2500 text messages sent/recvd. any minutes used are .30. So I will buy him a 25.00 monthly and he will give me 15.00 for the rest of it out of his allowance.
For his allowance he will get 15.00 wk from me IF he does all his chores. If there is one thing that is NOT done by Friday then he will not get his phone card from me that month at all. He will still get his allowance but will then have to decide to use it to go to movies or put it on his phone.
For his allowance his weekly chores will be putting away washed dishes daily, keeping his room, taking out garbage weekly and putting the garbage bins back once garbage is collected, and cleaning the bathroom. He is also responsible for his own laundry, if he wants clean clothes he can wash it.
This may sound like a lot but chores have been a sore point in our house for some time. I suffer from a chronic illlness that sometimes incapacitates me for days at a time. I cannot do all the housework. I just started working full time again, but in the fall with be a full time student again and work part time which will really drain me physically. When I am in a flare I cannot barely move without excruciating pain so just making dinner is an accomplishment.
Besides that, I think that at 13 a teen should be doing chores to contribute as part of the household. In the winter there will also be extras like shovelling which I will pay extra for if it is a lot b/c I am not allowed to shovel.
What do you all think of this plan? Does it sound reasonable? My son thinks it is reasonable, but do you think it is a good motivator?
