OT: Tutoring cost

My teenage son is seriously struggling with reading and english language, I posted an ad on the schools web asking for a tutor for the summer. I've gotten a few replies. What's the going rate for a tutor? The replies have been from teachers at his high school so they are professionals. I don't want to insult any one.

Any one have a price range I should offer?

I pay $30/hour for 4 hours/week for my DD. She is tutored by a teacher at her school. During the summer she goes to an enrichment center where she gets speech therapy 3hours/week and tutoring 2 hours/week and I pay $40/hour. (My daughter is developmentally delayed and has learning disabilies-she is mainstreamed in a small private school). She could go to summer school in our home district for no cost to us, but during the summer we live in another district (yes, I pay school taxes there too but I am not allowed to access there services unless my home district agrees to it and they won't do it).

I would ask the teachers what they charge. Around here (Atlanta suburbs), going rate for a math tutor who is/was a teacher is ~$50/hr! More like $25-35/hr for a good college student or other adult who doesn't have "teaching experience". But, where my mom is (rural NY) it's about half that.

Some tutors will give a discount if you commit to a certain number of weeks, come to their house, etc.

Summer is really a great opportunity to catch up on the material and I think it can be great for a child's self-esteem to get some one-on-one time with a positive tutor. Even if you end up going with someone who is not employed by the school, you may want to see if you can meet with a teacher for his grade for next year to see if they have any suggestions.

I paid a retired math teacher 70.00 hour. He was very good so I bit the bullet. The average around here is between $50.00 and $70.00.
Math was never my or DH strong subject so we felt it was best to get the tutor.
