OT--trying college (again)...so nervous!

College is much different when you go back as an adult. You have a totally different appreciate for it, especially when you're paying for it. I think you'll do fine.

That being said, please reconsider majoring in Psychology. A four year degree in it is kinda worthless, you really need at least a masters if not a phd before you can actually use it. Check with your schools placement department, see what they say. I could be wrong (it's happened before!), but I don't want you going 4 years and then not being able to find a job.

Good luck to you!

I agree. My older students who pay for classes themselves (one class costs little at most community colleges) really work and reap the benefits.
I also agree: too many of my students major in Psychology and end up never using that major and get no good job offers with it. A B.S. in Psych is not very useful.

I agree with this to a point. I am a Psychology and Social Behavior Major and a Public Health Policy Major. I plan on going to get my MSW and than my Ph.D in Developmental Psych.

That being said, the place that I am working (interning) at right now does higher people with a B.A in Psychology for fairly well paying jobs. They are psychology related but it all depends on WHAT you want to do in psychology. Its all developmental psychology related. It deals with developmental testing and therapies.

I know some people who want to do counseling and for some reason think you can do that with only a Bachelors. That is definitely not going to happen. But the place where I work (as well as teh hospital that I volunteer at and the hospital where I am a patient) do higher psychology majors for their child devlopment/child psychology and child life departments.

So while yes, I agree that much of the time a psych degree is useless if you dont go higher, depending on what you want to do, it is possible to find a job but its not going to be a 6 figure clinical job which is what I know a lot of people thinnk a psych. degree is about.

I am purely inetrested in woring with kids and developmental psychology so those jobs that I mentioned appeal to em and could be done with a bachelors and than they will pay for graduate school but you have to be flexible and willing to look outside the box for a job.

I just returned to school this semester. I find that the work is A LOT easier for me as an older student, but the balance of family life and work makes it hard.

My tips - ease back into it. Take as few credits as you can (even if you have to be full-time - don't try to kill yourself with too many credits). Set aside time - quiet time - for your homework. Even if you have to lock yourself in the bathroom to get the quiet time! And take time for yourself to have fun too. Give yourself some fun time after a big project or test is done. :)

I am getting my teaching certification, and it's tough juggling my kids, their school stuff, my part-time job, my husband's schedule AND my work, but I have a 4.0 for now and my house is still standing.

You can do it! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

You can do it!

My parents made me sit out 1 year after HS. It was a smart decision on their part, but I still wasn't ready. I did great the 1st year I went to CC. Then I started to party. My parents would not pay. So off to the work world I went. When I was 29 I went back and finished my AA in 1 year. I also got prego that year. I took off 2 semesters and started on my BA at 31 with a 7 month old baby. I had a lot of support from DH and my parents. I know I would not have graduated w/o DH. I got my BA in May 2007 at the age of 35. It took me 17 years, but I did it!

I started working as a teacher in Aug. 2007. I started my MA in Jan. 2008 and finished Dec. 2009. I just took off this past year and I am returning this Jan to get my Ed. Specialist degree. I am pretty sure I will get an Ed.D. at some point.

I hated school and now I love school. I never want to stop. I love it so much I became a teacher.

I promise, you can do it. It is okay to be nervous. You will do great :goodvibes:goodvibes Yes, it might be hard, but just make yourself trudge through the tough spots. Also, as someone already said - take advantage of any disability modifications.
My secret to success was to visit professors during office hours early in the semester and often. They want to help you and it easier to go with questions when they come up if you have already made yourself comfortable with talking one on one with them.

Most importantly - no matter how badly you do not want to go to a class or write a paper follow the advice of the great philosopher Nike and JUST DO IT! Make yourself :)))

You can do IT!

Thanks everyone for their support! :goodvibes:

The way my undergrad school works is that they have a 5 year plan. If you minor in education, you can attend school for one extra year and then get a masters. So this is the route that I'm planning to take. So either way, my degree will not go to waste.

Their psychology doctorate also has a tuition waiver for students. I think this is because you are required to teach Intro to Psych as part of the degree :confused3. It's for research psychology, which I do find interesting. I'd especially want to research the development of children with siblings and without siblings. (Yes I have though that one through lol.)

Thank you all so much for your support, I greatly appreciate it. It means a lot that I know so many amazing people here on the DIS :) :goodvibes:

Thanks again :hippie:
