OT-Tonsils and adenoids coming out

My DS had his out 3 years ago when he was 3 years old - I prepared him really well for the admission and he was a real little soldier and post op only complained once in hospital about the pain. I did keep him dosed up with regular analgesics once home - and he drank well - didn't get dehydrated! etc...Also took lots of stuff in to keep him occupied and a couple of pressies which really distracted him! It was the school hols and my DH took our older boys away for a few days and my ma had DD who was a baby and it all worked really well!
My DD4 is due to have T & A's and T Tubes (Myringotomy - in the UK!!) in a few weeks time and I am dreading it!! She is already anxious about it - so much so that we have had to stop talking about it in front of her! - I plan to do the preparation bit in the few days preceding the op! We have books - about hospital etc and I will buy a couple of nice distracting pressies - she is an entirely different personality to my DS and so I am sure we are in for a traumatic time - Oh! How pessimistic I sound!! Hopefully she will take it OK!! This time the older boys x 3 will be in school so hopefully it will be reasonably peaceful in the day!
I am sure it will be fine for you both! :thumbsup2

Here's a story I just did for Parents magazine (March issue). I learned a ton about the little tonsil-and-adenoid buggers when I wrote it!

Hope you and your child have smooth sailing!

My DD 4 just had her's out last Thurs. - so we are on day 4 at home. It has been hard for her these past couple of days...like others have said be sure to give the medicine every 4 hrs or she will be miserable. Sometimes my DD does not want the medicine b/c she is afraid that it hurts going down...I also had to force the liquids up until today. Now she drinks on her own. SHe is eating alittle bit, which is good. She is still relaxing and taking it easy, but I can tell she is getting alittle better each day. Good luck!

Hope the surgery went well!

My DD is almost 100% now (day 11). Back to school for her (and back to work for me) on Monday!

Everything went well! She seems to be doing okay, eating little bits and drinking some. She really wants to go outside to play, and she doesn't understand why she can't. LOL Thanks for all the good thoughts and tips, everyone! :thumbsup2

My DS8 had his tonsils & adenoids out when he was 4. The md said the second week was worst than the first because they feel better and want to move around more. It was a tough two weeks. Refused the Tylenol w/codeine - only wanted plain Tylenol. He sleeps so much better now - no snoring, less congestion. Push the fluids!

Be glad your doctor is willing to do the surgery when your DK is young. My DD suffered for years from nasty tonsils, but the docs always said, "Oh, it's just her allergies, there is nothing we can do." Finally, at age 15, they referred her to the ENT who was astounded that she hadn't had the tonsils out years before! They took tonsils and adenoids, and they had trouble with it so had to cauterize a LOT. Let me tell you, she was one sick puppy  and in a TON of pain for almost 10 days. They had her on liquid oxycodone for the pain, and she took it every 4 hours religiously or was in terrific pain. We even set the alarm clock to make sure she got the meds in the nighttime. I know your kids won't have problems like this. We were warned that the older they are the worse it is, and everyone I know whose kids had tonsillectomies when they were young (<10, maybe) bounced back after a couple of days. DD lost a full ten days of school and 12 pounds. YES- now that it's a year later, she is so thankful she had it done; she hasn't lost one day of school due to allergies, she can sleep at night, no nasty tonsilloliths, no sinus problems, but it sure was a tough road at the time:sad1:
