So, my dd is in kindy, and currently doing ballet & Daisy Scouts. Her teacher happens to coach poms, and her dd is a high schooler in poms. She just sent home an email with a brochure for a mini-poms clinic the high schoolers are doing as a fundraiser, and apparently some of the girls were asking about it. (I asked, but haven't heard yet, whether my dd was one of them!)

Anyhow, I'm trying to figure out if this is something I would want dd to get involved in, if she expresses interest. She has never done gymnastics, and isn't likely to do well in it (inherited my lack of talent) but loves to dance. I'm not entirely clear the difference between regular cheer and poms, and what you can do in grade school, except that I think poms is more dance related.

I want to be prepared before she gets home from school...help!

my dd has done the poms and the cheer clinics. I was way more impressed with what they learned at poms. It is a dance routine basically. The cheer clinic was clapping and shouting with a little pyramid at the end. My dd loved the poms clinic and she will most likely do it again when it is offered this winter.

My oldest was in Pom for years. I was the 'cheer mom'...lol They learned dance steps, that are also different cheer leading moves. They do only basic stuff until they are around 9-10 unless they have taken gymnastics and can do some of the more difficult moves. The coach usually made up a 'dance' routine to music of the coaches choice and then they learned the dance for competition. It was a lot of fun while she did it. But then she 'out grew' it and didn't want to do it anymore.

We do poms for parkball and have competiton this weekend. DD just turned six. It can be a small commitment or a huge one depending on the orginization. We had 3 one hour practices a week during regular season, and now that competiton is gearing up we practice 4 days a week for 2 hours. Some orginizations that do multiple competitions practice more, some that are more casual practice less.
