OT -taking DD to dermatologist soon looking for..

thank you all again for you input.... it will be very interesting to see what she recommends for the first time, but am hopeful for my DD that they will find something... like I said it isn't horrible, but she is aware... I don't think she has it bad enough for them to suggest the accutine route yet. Want to make sure I am asking all the right questions since this is new to me also.

First off I want to say its awesome that you are being proactive about her acne. My parents didn't think it was a "big deal" until I started getting very depressed about my face.

I tried many, many medications but I have deep cystic acne so most topical creams didn't work.

I ended up having to take 3 rounds of accutane. Accutaned should be a LAST resort drug for cystic acne. It totally messed with my digestive system. There is a major lawsuit against Accutane right now.

If her acne is mainly topical others are lots of non-scary options available!

As a non prescribed remedy Ihave found that raw honey works wonders. It even helps my cystic acne! You can find it in most grocery stores in the organic section. You just rub the raw honey onto your face and let it sit for 20 mins then rinse off. Just make sure its raw honey not pasteurized.

My DS has had bad acne for years and we have been seeing the Derm for years as well.
He was started on oral anitobiotics, and has had creams like tazorac and epidiuo (sp?).
Nothing was working and so after going back and forth for months we decided to do the accutane. It is a very serious drug, but thankfully my DS has had no side effects except severe dryness (but most of the acne meds have this side effect). He used lots of moisturizer and lip cream. He has to get bloodwork done each month (and girls would also have to have a pregnancy test done each month before getting another RX).
It has made a real difference for him. We have this month and one more left and I am excited to see the end result. It has cost us quite a bit, though, as our copay after ins is $180 per month just for the meds.
The other creams were expensive too...just not as much as the accutane, but the accutane has really made a difference.
Im sure that the OP's dd will have many more options before accutane. It is a last resort and the OP's dd doesnt sound that bad off. Just wanted to give our experience with the accutane.

this is the OP here... just wanted to give a quick update.. my dd 14 has been on her meds/prescript for about 5months now and her skin looks great!

they put her on a 100mg of minocycline, which she has now switched to every other day, and using Aczone in the am and pm.. they also wanted her to use something like Ziana in the pm... but insurance wouldn't cover any of it and they wanted over $100 for it..... so instead she is using tretinoin and clindamycin together which the pharm said was basically the same thing.

she is also using OTC Cerave and Cetaphil in the am and pm for her face cleanser

Just thought I would share since it has definitely helped, her skin looks great.
HTH someone else :)

My dd was prescribed Epiduo that she applies after washing her face at night. It has worked really well so far (almost a year now). You have to continue using it even after your face clears up.

Dr gave us a discount card that the rep left at his office. And that has been a godsend since this normally costs well over a $100 per tube. We get it for $35 with the card. The tube has lasted about 6 months. Only thing is, the card is about to expire and I won't be able to get her next refill for $35. I'm hoping the dr has new cards at his office.
