I am the type of parent who likes to teach their child when they are at home. She will be going into a half day 1st grade\ half 2nd grade (Reading, Math) and I am trying to think of all the stuff that would be both appropriate and fun to teach her this summer.

I am not worried about reading (at all- she never puts down any book, I have to pry them from her fingers) Math we are working with simple fractions and refocusing on money and time (she knew these but I think not working with them this year made her rusty).

So that leaves Social Studies and Science. What is appropriate? I was thinking water cycle, weather, plants, enviroments, animals? But I am so not sure about Social Studies? Should we do maps? History? (How to do History is a question in itself) What?

So what are you teaching your children over the summer?

I like buying the workbooks you can find out there..I bought some at walmart and others at one of our educational stores. They have cool ideas for Social studies summer projects or science projects etc.

I don't know what is in your area, but I like to focus our summer learning around places we can go. We go to the New England Aquarium, Boston Science Museum, Children's Museum etc... and check out the regular and special exhibits. They baseball hall of fame has a traveling exhibit that we be at the science musuem which DS9 is thrilled about. The boys have learned about the Revolutionary War in school so we go in to the city to see all the historic sites, statues etc... I will read Make Way for Ducklings to DD and some of her friends and we will make our annual trek to the Swan Boats. I know these are all specific to my area, but I find that the kids love the hands on science and social studies and remember it so much better that way. As far as social studies at that age, my 1st grade students LOVE social studies. They have a very strong sense of justice at that age and are very interested in learning about their community and the world around them as well as historical figures. Have fun!:thumbsup2
