OT -- Severe Baby Acne in 3 Month Old

Don't know where you live, but they can do a skin test or a RAST which is a blood test. You can check out my son's allergist's book, Food Allergies for Dummies, by Dr. Robert Wood, Director of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Johns Hopkins hospital. The blood test is quick, and it's good for those with skin rashes that can make it difficult to do a skin test. I don't know why on earth they wouldn't test before 6 months - my son almost died at 8 months.

My son gets a blood test annually, and he was part of the initial milk immunotherapy study at Johns Hopkins a couple of years ago.

I do think it's important to rule out any allergy.

Glad to hear it's not infected - my neighbor has a daughter with multiple food allergies and eczema, and she's had some bad infections.

Hmm. Thanks for the info. I will raise this at Thursday's appointment. We live in Chicago so you would think there would be an abundance of allergists, but we were repeatedly told 6 to 8 weeks at a minimum to get an appointment.

Unfortunately, though, he said that it may be infected -- I hope he is wrong, or that the cortisone helps.

OP Here -- just wanted to give an update in case anyone was curious.

The hydrocortisone helped a lot, but there was still two really bad spots by the time we went to our Dermatologist. Our Dermatologist said that it was NOT baby acne -- I can't remember the specific medical diagnosis, but essentially, the skin had become so irritated that it had thickened and then had a surface infection. She said that it probably just started out as baby acne, but morphed into a bigger problem at some point. Luckily, she said that it can be treated without oral antibiotics. She prescribed two prescription ointments to put on it twice a day -- one is an antibiotic and one was a special type of hydrocortisone creme. She also said to continue to put Aquaphor on it 3-4 times a day. It has made a world of difference -- I finally get to see my baby's beautiful skin! The worst spot has not completely disappeared yet, but our dermatologist said that it could take up to 10 days for it to completely heal.

I feel so bad for not addressing this earlier -- I knew in my gut that my pediatrician was wrong. :( At least it looks like it will be resolved shortly!

REALLY GLAD that this is all clearing up and that it won't be a continuing issue. Enjoy your beautiful baby!!!
