Don't know where you live, but they can do a skin test or a RAST which is a blood test. You can check out my son's allergist's book, Food Allergies for Dummies, by Dr. Robert Wood, Director of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Johns Hopkins hospital. The blood test is quick, and it's good for those with skin rashes that can make it difficult to do a skin test. I don't know why on earth they wouldn't test before 6 months - my son almost died at 8 months.
My son gets a blood test annually, and he was part of the initial milk immunotherapy study at Johns Hopkins a couple of years ago.
I do think it's important to rule out any allergy.
Glad to hear it's not infected - my neighbor has a daughter with multiple food allergies and eczema, and she's had some bad infections.

At least it looks like it will be resolved shortly!
