We lost a wonderful and courageous woman yesterday.

It's hard to believe that before the mid-1970's breast cancer was something that was rarely spoken of in public - as if it were a source of shame or somehow "dirty".

The same with alcohol and drug addiction. That was another "taboo" subject that was kept under wraps and no doubt thousands (if not millions) of people died because of the stigma that was attached to it.

Betty Ford changed all of that. Her contributions to society are immeasurable.

May she find the eternal peace she so richly deserves.

She was a beautiful woman inside and out who truly made a difference in the World. We should all strive to have the kind of long-lasting impact she did. No one will ever know how many lives she saved by being willing to talk about taboo subjects.

Thanks for being the ONE person to respond and honor her memory, Amanda.

I was very young when she was First Lady, so don't remember much about her. Of course I know about the Betty Ford Center, but was unaware of her breast cancer struggle. From the tributes, I also learned she studied dance under Martha Graham. How cool is that? She was a truly amazing woman and a national treasure. Honesty, grace, strength, and beauty. :flower3:

Living here in West Michigan, we are watching her service on TV today. Both the Fords were from Grand Rapids and are now buried here. My grandparents knew them well. She was an extraordinary lady, standing up for many 'unpopular' things with courage and grace. Thanks for you original post remembering her!
