Hi Guys,

Just wondering what everyone feed their dogs/puppies?
I have a 6 month old Shih-tzu, she is on Iams Smart Puppy. Our teacher from Puppy Kindergarten told me I was feeding her a crappy food and shouldn't give her anything with Corn, Gluten or Wheat in it. She also told me that the food from the vet is crap too. They of course sell many natural brands and everyone but myself and 1 other person taking the class switched. I didn't really want to switch foods until I change from puppy to dog food. Many of the foods say 1 year, the vet tech at the office told me many people switch around 8 months because of all the calories in puppy food.
Though I would see what everyone else's dogs get to eat! :goodvibes

We had our shih-tzu on Orijen but we found the protein content was just too high for him as it botherd his kidneys. Science Diet is not very good either despite what the vet says as they have a personal interest in promoting it. We now feed him Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken and Rice. Anything you can buy from a grocery store is very poor quality and should be avoided.:goodvibes

We have a shih-tzu and a Shih-poo. Both dogs have been eating Iams lamb and rice since they were puppies. We have never had any health problems with either one of them. I have heard people say Iam's is not the best food to feed your animals, but it was the only food both our dogs liked. They are both currently eating the seniors lamb and rice. Our dogs are 10 & 14.

Iams mini-chunks for our schnoodle.

I have pet-sitters--she works with Guide Dogs and he with the Humane Society. I no longer have a doggie:worried: but he tells me that IAMS is awful as is the Medi-Cal I buy from the Vet for my cats! He highly recommended one type of food in particular--but I have forgotten it! I will ask.....

Eagle Pack - Holistic Select Anchovy, Sardine & Salmon.

We feed our adult dog Orijen and our puppy Wellness.

I use Nutrience dog and cat foods for our two pets. They were one of the few pet food lines that wasn't part of that food scare last year. You can get it at Petsmart.

We use Nutro lamb and rice for our Brittany - we switched to it from a cheaper food and he sure does poop a whole lot less now!!
Our vet said it was fine but also suggested instead of giving him just the kibble we add in some raw cut up vegies a few times a week too - or give him a treat of canned pumpkin (he likes it frozen in ice cube trays) or some plain unsweetened no fruit added yogurt or some cottage cheese.

I recently switched both my dogs and cats over to Eagle Pack Holistic. Before that they were on foods purchased from the vet but when I did my own research and also talked to a vet assistant who works for a different vet, I found that the stuff I was getting from the vet wasn't of very good quality - dogs and cats are meat eaters yet the first ingred listed on the veterinary diet is corn.

Well I learned a lot after the pet food problem last year and when my Golden retriever developed problems that "coincidentally" happened at the same time I tried to read up on everything I could. A lot of food is "crap" and the expression "I wouldn't even feed that to my dog" comes to mind. We have a new Golden puppy ( my Riley passed away at Christmas) and we are feeding her Innova large breed puppy with a little Merrick canned mixed in. I actually was at the pet food store today and I picked up some Wellness canned and Canidae as well. I also make some food to mix in with the Innova. It is essentially what would be in the canned. I make my own meat and add vegies and mash it up. "Table scraps" have such a bad rap. There is nothing wrong with table scraps as long as they are nutritious and added to the dog's total diet and you are mindful of their tummies, just watch seasonings and gravies etc.

My Lab has severe allergies so iams would be very bad for him

he get natural balance fish & sweet potato

got my black lab and shiba inu on evo red meat. no filler, no corn or all that stuff just meat, very high on protein.

pretty expensive stuff 60$ med bag.

they also have small kibble and large kibble.

Hi
We have a 6 month old Schnauzer/Pug mix. We have had her for 3 months and from the day we brought her home she never had solid poop and it progressively got worse. She was on Canadaie when we first got her, tried her on boiled rice and chicken...that didn't help, tried her on a vet Gastro dry food. Can't remember the name of that, but still no change. Finally the vet tried her on the Royal Canin Sensitivty dry food which is catfish meal based, and within 24 hours she was 100% better . We think she is allergic to chicken! I know I haven't heard good things about Royal Canin, but it has been the only food she can eat.

Thanks for the replies! I think I am going to check into the natural brands and see what brands I can buy here.

I don't have a dog but cats (actually a mom and her 2 babies) and my vet told me that VetDiet from Mondou was crap food too. She told me to give them Eukanuba but I don'T want to feed my animal with food from Iams or Purina since the compagny don't threat the animal right.
I give them Eagle pack witch is made with 90% of food good for human!
Here's a list of all the food not tested on animal (cruelty free) http://www.iamscruelty.com/notTested.asp

We have a 5 year old Shih Tzu who first ate Nutrience when we got her. It was recommended, but then one day she just stopped and refused to eat it, she was still less than a year old. We tried all other other popular foods (IAMS, Purina, Pedigree, several natural ones from the vet). They all made her sick in different ways and it cost us several hundred dollars in finding out what it was and why she wouldn't eat certain foods. She had infections (bladder, ears, eyes) for no reason, as well as skin infections that had her wimpering and scratching all the time.

It turned out (from my own research) that most Shih Tzus are allergic to corn, gluten and other derivatives of that. We found over time, trial and lots of vet bills that the food for her was Royal Canin SPECIAL 30 (not the Shih Tzu one). We could live with the other infections, but the skin problems were the worst. It caused her lots of aggrivation and she was really miserable.

As soon as she started on Royal Canin, her skin and other infections cleared up and it really seems like she loves the taste. It isn't cheap, but our only option.

We feed our dogs TLC Pet Food.....it's all they get.
Every time we have to go to the vets for check ups she always comments on how beautiful they are, their coats are lovely and shiny and they are in excellent shape and maintain a great weight.

They ship to you for free also it's the best way to buy dog food, and it's excellent food.

Have a look!!

Our little terrier eats Wellness and the golden eats Canidae. The golden is actually the picky eater! I tried him on several premium brands before finding this one that he loves.
The terrier has a severe corn allergy and used to get terribly ill before it was diagnosed. Now she not only had a healthy digestive system, but no more scratching!
