Thought the families board might be the best place to get answers, as I've seen some other posts about WAHMs and SAHMs here too.

I'm currently the family member w/ a job w/ benefits, and we definitely can't afford to pay for our own. But, I'm always looking at my options and backup plans too. Does anyone have or know of good Part Time jobs that offer medical benefits? I work full time now, but if we decide to have more children, I might look into changing that what with the extraordinary cost of daycare around here. But, although we might be able to squeak by w/ a PT income from me, we couldn't do that AND pay for our own bennies as well.

Any tips?

Actually I found individual medical insurance much, much lower than I had expected to when I decided to become an independent contractor to facilitate working from home. It costs us about the same as our previous employee portion of a group plan. Do some serious research you might find that you can afford it, as I did.

That being said, some companies do extend benefits for part time, though not many. Starbuck's comes to mind. What kind of work are you interested in?

Look into becoming a school crossing guard. Short hours, full benefits for the family.

I've heard Starbucks has bene's for PT -- not sure of my source on that. Starbucks would probably be pretty easy to flex schedulewise, e.g. you can work evenings/weekends if your DH/DP is home with the kids.

I agree -- my husband lost his job a few years ago and we found private insurance to be much cheaper than Cobra so we did that -- then he got another job with benefits and turned down the insurance because what we were paying was just about the same but provided more flexibility with doctors.

Thanks for all the great tips so far everybody!!

I had no idea private insurance could be affordable. I did COBRA for a little while when I first got out of college, and it was SO expensive.

I'll definitely do some more research.

As for what kind of job... Honestly, nothing in particular. I'm not looking to do this as a career move, I'm looking to do it for my family or as a backup. I love kids and I'm somewhat creative, but I also did very well in school, and am a fast typist and a good data entry clerk (I always had a part time job and jobs during school vacations, so I've tried a little bit of a lot of different things.) I'd be willing to try just about anything.

Lowes offers PTers full benefits, heatlh, dental, 401k the works :) You also get a 10% discount, and at least 1 time of year you get 20% off. I heard its twice but so far for sure all I know is 1 time a year.

Are day care workers in your area unionized? If so, that may be an option.
NYC day care center teachers, assistants and aides all receive the same benefits. However, the aides only work 4 hours a day.

After a 3 month probation period they receive:

30 vacation days a year
12 sick days a year
2 personal days
11 paid holidays
free family medical (no copays)
free family dental (no copays)
low cost prescription program
Vision supplement every 2 years (this is in addition to the vision plan that included with our medical) for the whole family
401K
Credit Union
Free legal services
Tuition reimbursement

There are a few more but I can't think of them right now.

They have a very low salary, but the benefits can’t be beat.

Any hospitals in your area? I know our local hospital offers medical benefits to p/t employees ... the health insurance costs quite a bit more than for f/t employees, but it is available.

I have heard that Half-Price Books offers benefits to p/t workers. (You have to work a certain number of hours to qualify, but I don't know exactly how many it is. Definitely less than f/t though.) I don't know if there's one near you, but there are some in Pennsylvania, so maybe...

Holy mackeral. That's better than I get at my full time job!!!

I've never heard of them, but I'll look around. I LOVE to read, so it would probably be a good fit.

UPS and FedEx both offer full benefits, a set schedule, and depending on where you work, tuition reimbursement for PT package handlers.
Blockbuster used to, although most of them in my area have closed down, so I'm not sure that is still true.
Starbucks also offers full benefits for PTers.

I worked in a benefited part-time position (25 hrs/wk) at a bank. The benefited PT position wasn't one that every branch had but I got lucky in that there was one close to me that did. I see your in PA - the bank was Citizens Bank if that helps.

Hospitals.....the one I work for has the same medical/dental benefits for p/t as they do f/t. The difference comes in with the amount of vacation hours, etc.

I've worked p/t at a hospital for almost 7 years; before that, I worked f/t at the same place. There are several types of jobs you could do also.

Any community colleges or universities in your area. I work half time at one and get benefits.

I was also going to say a bank. Either a pt back office job or a teller position. Tellers have great hours as they usually are done by 4:00.

Oops, after I started typing I notice dthis was already mentioned, but I'll say it again--UPS. I worked there in college, had a 5:00 to 9:00 shift (give or take an extra hour at the end of the shift) Monday through Friday. It was decently hourly pay for a PT job and had full benefits.

These are all great suggestions, THANK YOU!!!

I should probably mention that I'd be looking for off hours. DS is only 2.5yrs, and if we were going to lose my full time salary, I'd have to cut out daycare. (That's part of why I'm looking... I'm thinking about trying to find some sort of split shift so I could be home w/ DS during the day and work evenings, nights or weekends while DH was home.)

But, I had no idea that there were this many options. You've all given me a lot to think about.

I work at a group home for adults with developemental disabilities in the evenings, and they offer bennies for PT. Not all do, but some. its a very rewarding job. You could look to see what is in your area.

Jordan Essentials offers health insurance to it's consultants. They're a bath and body company out of MN, used to be called Country Bunny. I'm a rep through them, although I don't devote a lot of time to it. I know there are reps that have made this a full time career with part time hours, and do VERY well. Their website is www.jordanessentials.com. Take a look if you're interested, and PM me if I can be of any help. HTH
