I know this sounds like a silly question, but how soon can you tell if you are pregnant?

The reason I ask is because my cycle has been so crazy lately. I have PCOS and my cycles are quite erratic. Sometimes I go 2 - 3 months or more without a period.

I am pretty sure that my last cycle was in August. I know that sounds strange to say that, but I am so used to having erratic cycles, sometimes I don't record the dates.

TMI Warning: Anyway, the BD event happened last Saturday 10/13 (No BD events for a long time before that, so that would def. be the conception date.) How soon can I test? Does my wacky cycle affect my testing date? I'm trying to find the appropriate window to test and know for certain. If I am, then we will be happy, but if it is neg., then I want to get with my OB and see if he can give me anything to help me start my cycle again.

I have been having a lot of crampy feelings, but no period yet. But then again, with such a wacky cycle I don't know if I would be about to start right now anyway. AAAAgh!

Any thoughts?

I would wait at least 2 weeks. any sooner and your neg might not be accurate.

Have you read the book Taking Charge of your Fertility? Very good book, especially for someone in your situation. It will teach you to know when you are ovulating etc.

ITA.

As for how early a person can tell, well, my mom knew almost immediately with both her kids. She never had a pg test at the OB, just called and made appointments.

And with me, my husband knew the next morning b/c I was a completely different person, LOL. Calm, quiet. Very odd. I refused to believe, and figured that anyone who had just finished 2 years of engagement with the wedding of hubby's dreams had a right to be calm and quiet, LOL. By the next week as we were getting on our honeymoon cruise, I had gained a cup size. By the end of that week long cruise I had gained another cup size and had developed huge blue veins in the "cup size" area, had developed a bionic sense of smell, and was sleeping by 8pm (I slept through the midnight chocolate buffet, despite DH coming to the room and trying to wake me repeatedly). I still refused to believe. DH finally just brought home a test, and b/c he had known for 3 weeks by then (I had mis-remembered the start of my last cycle so by that time, if I had remembered correctly, I would have realized I was late) his reaction to the positive was pretty boring.

Anyway, not everyone is like that. But you CAN know almost immediately.

Others, however, that I have met, didn't know with their first until they were six MONTHS. And that same woman, with her second, didnt' know until 5 months! Since long pregnancies run in our family (and since long pregnancies make "modern" American pregnancy health care providers nervous nellies), not finding out for a few months would be lovely, IMO. Takes some of the waiting time off of it.:upsidedow

Generally home tests aren't real accurate before 2 weeks, although there is one out there that claims to be. I had a feeling I was pregnant with DS about a week later, but after months of disappointments and a uterine infection I wasn't sure. I happened to be at my perinatologist's office for some testing and told him I suspected and so when he ran my other blood tests he checked that. Low and behold I was, although at first his nurse said no because she thought I said I was supposed to have GOTTEN my period Friday not that I was supposed to GET it on Friday (the test had been done on Monday and it was now Wednesday). So can you feel like you are sure, but before 14 weeks I would only trust a blood test to be accurate.

I know what she means by BD, but what exactly does it stand for (if it can be explained on this board): Big Day?

I also have PCOS---HATE IT!--- and am in the SAME situation as you are. The difference for me is that my periods are really regular...to the day! I leave for DW in 5 days and I am late for my period. I dont want to be pg right now! I want to enjoy DW! LOL! :rotfl2:

When I was pg wth my 3rd who is now 16mo, I tested with an early pregnancy test...First Response Early Detection. I tested at 10DPO. It was a BFP!!! But for me I dont feel like my BFP's are really accurate until I test with an Equate brand test.

So did you test??? Keep us posted! :cheer2:

Good Luck and I hope that you get what you are hoping for!

There is a test that says you can test five days before you miss a period. So in a perfect 28 day cycle you could test on day 23, which is 9 days after you ovulated and did the BD. The home pregnancy tests have different levels of HcG that they test for so if you have one that will turn positive at a lower level the sooner you can test. Good luck and I hope you get what you are hoping for.

OMG THE best book ever! It was my Bible when we were TTC #1 and I was learning how to chart. I also have PCOS and seem to only be able to get PG on Clomid.

Since I was charting each time, I knew exactly when I ovulated and when implantation was most likely to occur. Knowing that, I tested at 10 days after ovulation (10 DPO) each time and got my ++. If I wasn't 1000% of my O date, I would also wait 2 weeks.

If you really feel the need to test about 10 days later, First Response Early Result and Answer Early Result are very sensitive and can tell you early. But a negative that early might just be too early.
