Hi everybody,

I don't post much, but I read this board enough to know where to turn with a question (the combined knowledge of the people on this board is impressive!).

For those of you familiar with Philadelphia--One leg of our family road trip next month is going to take us by Philadelphia. We'll be driving from Boston to Washington, D.C. over the course of 2 days, and Philadelphia looks like a sensible place to split the drive (take the kids to see the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall). I am hoping there is a suburb somewhere along our route that would have a Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn or similar, that would make a good place for us to stay.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

any reason you don't want to stay in Philly? we have gotten some great deals in Philly using hotwire.com. there is an expert on tripadvisor.com that knows how to decode the hotels so you pretty much know where you are staying. The last time we used it we paid about 100.00 for a Saturday night at the Hyatt Penns landing and it was very nice. We were on a very high floor overlooking the bridge.

The Sheraton-society hill is withing walking distance of the historical sites.

that sheraton is very close to the Hyatt (but easier to see the sites from the Sheraton because it isn't across a highway!) and is also on hotwire.com

I stayed at the Sheraton Society Hill last summer for a conference. I had a day and half to sight see with dd5 and dd9. We were visiting friends in NJ and took Amtrak to Philly so no car. We easily walked from the hotel to places like the Visitors Center, Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross's House, Freedom Museum, National Constitution Center etc. We didn't do Independence Hall but walked by it. The kids enjoyed the swimming pool and I liked the hot tub.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I wouldn't mind staying in the city, I just tend toward suburban hotels because access seems a bit easier and parking tends to be free.

So, all the comments got me excited to try the Sheraton Society Hill...until I tried to get a reservation and learned there is no availability for our date (August 7).

Any other suggestions?

Trying to stay more "budget" I would try the Hilton Garden Inn on Arch. It is near the convention center.

We vacationed in Philly a few years ago. We had a great stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott. There is a Courtyard by Marriott next door. I'm not sure how much parking was because we didn't have a car. We walked or used the Philly Phlash to get everywhere we needed. They had a great breakfast and manager's reception.

There is a Residence Inn on Street Rd. in Bensalem. Close to I-95 and Rt. 1, the major roads going into Philly. Parking is free. They have a pool and kitchens in their rooms. Breakfast every morning and usually some kind of snacks at night Monday to Thursday/Friday. There is a ton of restaurants in the area along with the visitor center. Where ever you decide to stay, have a fabulous time.

I have stayed at both the Sheraton and the Hyatt. I much prefer the Hyatt. I just checked Hotwire though and I don't see it. You can keep checking..it is the only 4 star in Penn's landing. I think I paid under $100 for it. Good luck. You can also check tripadvisor..usually really good advice on there.

I wanted to thank everyone for the advice...

There must be something going on in Philadelphia on August 7, I'm having trouble finding a room that can accomodate my family of 4 (though we're considering 2 rooms at the Alexander Inn, that place looks great!)

It looks like there are lots of places available by the airport, but since we'll be coming from the north, and not seeing the city until the day after, I'm starting to think we might just stay in the Trenton area, and head to Philly in the morning.

Jimmy Buffett concert in Camden on the 7th....Have you looked in the NE Phila area??
There is a Sheraton on Roosevelt Blvd and also some hotels in Trevose near Sesame Place.
I would also suggest Cherry Hill NJ area, but probably has vacancy issues due to concert. Good Luck.

Hmmm...Ahhh....I did note your location...but I thought it was the city of brotherly love....I guess you didn't get that post either!

WOW! I was joking! Relax!

...we are the city of brotherly love....unless you spill our beer at a Phillies game! :rotfl:

FYI not sure if this is the reason you are having an issue finding room availability but, there is a large medical "conference"(actually the word used was Summit) happening in Philly at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel August 8-12th. I don't think this will affect any sightseeing plans you may have because the people attending this "conference" will be in seminars etc. all day but, the room situation may be an issue. Good luck, hope everything works out.
