I have been using PerioProtect's Perio Trays for over two years. It's simple and it works. When I use the trays the feeling is amazingly clean. It feels like I've just been to the dentist for a cleaning, but it's much easier and painless.
Since I have diabetes, this system helps with more than just teeth. Research shows links between gum disease and diabetes, heart disease, pancreatic cancer and Alzheimer's. For this reason, I need to keep my gums bacteria-free. I wear my trays 10 minutes every day while I'm taking a shower, so it doesn't take any time out of my day. I recommend the system to everyone. Decay and periodontal disease are basically caused by bacteria, and a tooth brush and floss can't kill the bacteria like the perioprotect sytem.
I'm so passionate about these trays because the results in my mouth are amazing. I was told I needed surgery and that I was going to lose three teeth..., but that was before this system and over two years ago. I've still got my teeth and have never had surgery.
What is Perio Protect? I just had to have treatment on my gums with Arestin and now go every 3 months to make sure my gums are remaining healthy. The Arestin worked, but anything I can do would be great.
Could you tell me about this product and also where you can purchase it?
Jeannie - go to perioprotect.com to get information and search for a dentist near you. (Do I sound like a commercial?)
I had a deep cleaning about 2 years ago, and I go every 4 months to the dentist (started at 3 but I was doing so well they put me on 4). About a year ago I had a spot of irritation that Arestin took care of. It came back last month so the dentist sent me to a perio. I told him I wanted to look at non-surgical alternatives and he had never heard of perio protect. He ignored my desires and told me I need surgery and a bone graft where the irritation is and a deep cleaning the rest of my mouth - this was 2 days after I had been for a regular checkup! I guess surgery is a bigger money maker. Needless to say I am not going back to him.
I emailed another perio, and he pretty much laughed at me and recommended laser surgery as the best alternative.
Anyhow, I have an appointment with a dentist 1.5 hours away to see if perio protect will work for me. He's the closest one that offers it.
Sally - can you tell me more about how you got started? How many visits to get the trays and get going on the program and how often you did follow up visits? I'm okay with the out of pocket expense and taking time off work, but I like to know what I am getting into. (knowing of course that my experience will be different from yours )
As I remember it, they had to take impressions on my teeth and the "mouth guards" took a while to be made. I had to go back a week or so later to get them. The process is easy and quick and in my case, I told them I was a whimp. I wanted the most painless treatment available. And believe me, this system is so easy. It's just a part of my home care now. I put the trays in while in the shower and then brush my teeth. My cleaning times went from over an hour to 15 minutes. My hygienist was more amazed than I was. It was very comforting to hear that I no longer had coffee stains to clean off and no plaque build up. I didn't even mention the fact that the main "side affect" is that it whitens your teeth!!!
The medicine used is a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide, which is what you body uses to naturally fight off bacteria, and it also whitens teeth.
As a dental hygienist I would love to hear from another hygienist that has actually used this in their practice. I checked out the website and they are offering several continuing education courses across the country for a fee. As any dental professional knows, most companies will offer free courses to help spread the word on their product. I am also interested in the fact that the product is "FDA Cleared" not FDA approved. I have not seen this product in any RDH journals and would like to get more info...but I'll be darned if I'm going to pay a company to promote their product.
From what I can find, the trays are registered with the FDA as a "medical device"... which means I am looking into having this covered by my medical insurance if dental won't pick it up.
