OT Paypal question???

I know I have read about this from this board and other boards. My dh bought some things off of ebay and paid for it with paypal. I recieved that reciept. But I also got an email today from the same address saying my account was going to be suspended. Claiming they had contacted me with some suspicious activity on my account and my card had been reported stolen? It looked just like the emails from pay pal. I did not respond and came here first to ask if this is one of those bogus emails I have heard about? I can't believe they can make it look that real. Anyway do I just erase it and do I have to contact anyone? Thanks! I am so glad that I read about this and did not respond!

Best way to check is to go to www.paypal.com and log into your account. It will state any problems with your account etc. I wouldn't open this e-mail or respond because it might have a virus or be some kind of scam. So check your account online and if everything is ok there, just delete the message.

Sounds like spam. Don't follow the link in the email. Do as the PP said and go directly to PayPal and log in. If there are any "alerts", they'll show up in the left hand column after you log in.

More than likely, it's a fake email "fishing" for private info. They look very authentic, but they're not.

It's a good idea to forward it to spoof@paypal.com. (Any that look like they may be from eBay should be forwarded to spoof@ebay.com). They follow up on these bogus emails, and sometimes are able to catch the senders. Don't ever click on a link in an email that looks like it's from PayPal or eBay or any bank, etc. This will just take you to a page that will ask for sensitive information that the sender is trying to steal from you. NO legitimate businesses send emails that you have to enter such information in. Always go to the web site directly to sign in.

No matter how official an e-mail looks to you NEVER click a link and use that link to enter any of your information, make this a standard rule. Always read the note, and then go to the website via your Favorites or by entering the site like you always do. Once you are there, verify your information. The spammers are getting very clever, and the e-mails they send are looking very good.
A most recent scam is an e-mail saying that an item you recently bid on (on eBay) has a problem, don't click the link.

As Sargent Esterhouse (sp?) on Hill Street Blues would say "Let's be careful out there!"

I get those a lot. The first one freaked me out since I had not used my paypal in a few weeks. When I called them they told me that:
1. They would not email anything like that
2. They always put your name on any thing they send you not "Dear Paypal
customer"

Two things to consider.

Last month I received an e-mail from PayPal that my backup credit card had expired and needed to be updated. First of all I was addressed by name in the body of the message. Second it did show the last four digits of the credit card. Third, and most important, there were no links at all in the message. I then went to PayPal through my normal bookmark and did a normal log in, went into Profile and credit cards and saw that the credit card had actually expired and updated the information.

The other point is when you forward an e-mail to spoof at either eBaay or PayPal, before forwarding you should set your mail reader to where it will "show full headers"; this will allow their anti-Spam program to determine the actual source.
