I need help with something if anything can be done at all. I recently opened up a banking acct in order to accept funds when selling thru ebay. I had previously being using paypal for a couple of years only using a credit card to pay for anything I won. Well I kept the banking acct empty so no money could be taken from it. Unfortunately, two items I purchased somehow were drafted out of the banking acct instead of the credit card. I don't know how this happened because I never asked them or was notified that my banking acct would be my primary funding option now. Well I received notice from the bank that an overdraft occured of $35.00. Naturally, I then contacted paypal once I realized what was going on and told them I didn't wish for any more transactions to be funded out of the acct only the credit card. Lo and behold after telling me that would check into this they send the drafts thru again causing another $35.00 charge to occur. They are now telling me there is nothing I can do!!! Is this right? :confused3

I had a similar situation once... except PayPal notified me that a transaction failed because I had not enrolled a bank account, just my cc.

I believe some sellers who use PayPal do not necessarily accept credit card payments... something about the fees they have to pay to accept such transactions. It's possible your sellers accept PayPal but not cc. Check the listings; sometimes you'll notice the PayPal logo but not a visa or mastercard logo.

Also check whether your cc info is updated. When my expiration date came up I think my account defaulted to my checking account.

I have had a couple of problems with Paypal over the years and dealing with them is extremely FRUSTRATING. Talking to them, trying to explain ANYTHING to them is really like talking to a brick wall. They must be trained to act that way because nobody could be as rude and act so ignorant - like they don't understand - as naturally as those paypal customer service reps. I hope not anyway. :earboy2:

Good luck getting your situation fixed. I don't have a lot of hope for it though, as I have been there myself. there is a website out there that has Paypal horror stories on it. Once they have all that financial info on you, you can wind up at their mercy.

I am crossing my fingers for ya! Sorry I don't have any info/advice. Just be very careful with them.

I also have a credit card and my checking account listed with PayPal. I, also, found out the hard way that when I make a purchase, it always defaults to the checking account. I must click on the "other funding options" link when completing the transaction and select the credit card. My guess is that PayPal does this to increase their profit as I think credit card companies charge all companies accepting credit cards (PayPal in this case) a fee per transaction. If PayPal can encourage you to use your checking account, they don't have to pay the fee. Even when I do select the credit card to make my purchase, PayPal comes back with one more prompt asking if I'm sure I want to switch payment methods.

Good luck resolving your penalty fees issue...

Thanks everyone! My bank told me I should contact the attorney general's do you think this would be a good idea?

It wouldn't hurt. I don't know if they will help you with your specific case, but when the AG gets enough complaints of a similar nature, they often go after the company or industry involved. Most glaring example: the big tobacco lawsuits. You might be able to help others in the future, if not yourself specifically. If no one complains, the policies will never change.
